Chiefs Are Healthy, Chargers Not So Much

The Chiefs injury report to the NFL for Monday night’s game has one name – FS Kendrick Lewis. He’s listed because of an ankle injury suffered against Oakland. He’s listed as questionable.

The situation with the Chargers is not as good. Three players were declared out of the game because of injury: DE Luis Castillo (broken leg), G Kris Dielman (concussion) and OLB Shaun Phillips (foot). Castillo has been out all season, but Dielman and Phillips are starters and losing them hurts the Chargers.

It also appears that they’ll be without RB Michael Tolbert, who was listed as doubtful with hamstring and hand injuries. Tolbert is San Diego’s second leading rusher and fourth leading receiver and has scored five touchdowns.

Listed are questionable are WR Malcom Floyd (hip) and S Darrell Stuckey (groin). Probable are FB Jacob Hester (foot), LT Marcus McNeill (neck), OL Scott Mruczkowski (neck), TE Antonio Gates (foot) and RB Ryan Mathews (thumb).

Haley’s conditioning program works. It’s part of his ability to bring the best out of players. The players have bought in to the upside of being better conditioned than their opponents and Haley’s reasons for pushing them so hard. It isn’t personal. It’s business.

If Matt Cassel plays well, the Chiefs can be in every game and win more than they lose. Haley has these guys in a position to win and the team needs consistent, above-average play from their quarterback.

On a related note, I like the Zorn hire more every week. Charlie Weis is a great coordinator, but looking at the play-calling, it appears the Chiefs offense is fine. Cassel simply needs to find the open man (they are open) and deliver it where it can be caught (they have great hands). Easier said than done, but if Cassel can’t find the open man, he needs to use his legs— the guy can run. It’s an asset that has been under-utilized.
