Camp Practice Update 8/19 A.M.
From River Falls, Wisconsin
Todd Haley made it very plain Wednesday morning that something he said on Tuesday should not have been taken as unhappiness with QB Matt Cassel.
Haley was asked if Cassel had been the best quarterback in camp. The head coach responded with “I’ll hold out on answering that right now.”
That was translated as a slam at the man the Chiefs have made their franchise quarterback.
“This is a full-time evaluation,” Haley said. “You’ve got game situations and one quarterback’s game situation may have been different than another’s. There are a lot of things that go into the equation that I don’t think it’s fair for any of those guys to answer that question.
“Matt is working hard. He’s into it. He cares about it. This is training camp and we are evaluating a lot of different guys, a lot of receivers, a lot of running backs, tight ends, the whole deal. ”
Wednesday’s morning practice was a mixed bag, as the Chiefs got their first look at some of Minnesota’s offense and defense during the drill. They face the Vikings on Friday night in Minneapolis.
“We have a game tape to watch of them, but we really haven’t done a lot more than we did last week,” Haley said. “There are some specific things they do that we’ll cover but it won’t be a full game plan.”
Here are some notes, quotes and tidbits from the morning session:
– The weather has turned in the northwoods, as the practice went down under almost chilly conditions, with overcast skies, a brisk wind and temps in the low 60s. Great if you are wearing a helmet and shoulder pads as the Chiefs players were, not so good if you are part of the media horde and forgot the sweatshirt back in the dorm.
– Same four players held out of the work from the start: QB Tyler Thigpen, RB Kolby Smith, ILB Zach Thomas and G Tavares Washington. In his post-practice press conference, Haley again refused to address Thomas’ absence and injury.
– Joining the rehab group about halfway through practice was SS Bernard Pollard. He injured his right foot/ankle in last Saturday’s pre-season opener and it’s been bothering him since. Pollard went from practice to riding a stationary bike.
– Long snapper Thomas Gafford is now working at tight end. Haley said he was having a conversation with Gafford yesterday and found out that in college at the University of Houston he had played some tight end. So in hopes of building depth and possibly saving a roster spot along the way, Gafford is now the fifth tight end.
– FS Jarrad Page had a nice interception in a team period, and CBs Brandon Flowers and Maurice Leggett each knocked down two passes.
– Leggett was the first man in line as the Chiefs worked their punt return team. Also deep as a returner was R Dantrell Savage.

“This is a full-time evaluation,” Haley said. “You’ve got game situations and one quarterback’s game situation may have been different than another’s. There are a lot of things that go into the equation that I don’t think it’s fair for any of those guys to answer that question.”
Pretty sad commentary on the media that Haley actually had to spell this out.
“I’ll hold out on answering that right now.”
Naturally this was made into a “big thing” by sportswriters. Brodie is going to start and no doubt D-Bowe will be traded to the Jets.
Bob, we appreciate your balanced, non-Whitlockian coverage of the team.
The Jets better leave Bowe ALONE!
Just a rumor though.

Then Mutt went out and tossed 3 more INTS at practice – SHHH! Don’t anyone tell Scottie!

Hahaha! They are still holding Tyler out of practice…the only reason is b/c he is showing up Cassell n practices and that undermines Haley and Pioli, thats why they let Brodie run wit the second team b/c he has no shot n hell in playing in this league…wouldnt be surprised if they cut Tyler and he goes somewhere else and becomes a solid starting QB! Go Chiefs 2009 and beyond!
When Cassel starts throwing INT’s in games…I’ll start worrying. Right now, in PRACTICE it doesn’t mean a damn thing…except that our Defense can read a QB they see every day. Which is a GOOD thing, in my book. I’d be worried if they didn’t pick some.
And Alexthe”GREAT”…thanks for the laugh. I needed one. Because you WERE joking…right?
Mr Gretz. could tell us whats wrong with tyler the buater Quaterback how come he isnt taken part in camp he is probly the best QB KC has Brol does good in pregames but gets hurtin big games and cassel has
notshowed he can handle the job I hope there not going th traid thigpen off as it seems like the same old thing get rid of the player that make a difference
thanks Bill
shown he is as good as brodiekk
There’s another INT – Mutt’s done it again!
as usual this website overreacted on their hate for cassel and the new regime
I love the updates, but I told you the second you put it up, Haley was simply stating that EVERY position remains in eval mode till not just the end of camp(its not over so how with 3-4 practices left can he say who the best Qb in camp is?) but at the end of the preseason.
that bowe thing isnt even a rumor, its basically equal to an internet board “rumor” because realize that this came from a writer who went off of bowe’s demotion as a reason to be on the block, when really its just a tool to get him focused…
sigh.
I will also say, if bowe WAS on the block, cant be for less than ROY williams who got a 1/3/5….
Herm, you are up by two, deep in enemy territory, you have the 31st ranked defense in the league, What will you do?
Herm: Run three times up the middle, then try a fieldgoal. I know our defense will hold this time, once it did in another game, with another team, but more importantly I can blame my def. coor. for the failure. Then in the press conference create future Coors Light sound bites.
RTT0w, we really don’t miss your boy that much, we will roll the dice with the new guys.
alex the great? sigh im changing my posting name
few things, can we risk putting the teams only nickel back as a punt returner? injury wise?
also!!!!Pollard????? if he starts to have injury issues, that really hurts his strong camp and lead on mike brown!
I agree. Let’s see what happens after about 4-5 real games. Too much attention seems to be paid to those that can cite their vast historical recall. That’s a far cry from knowing the game of football & evaluating talent based on what a player is being asked to do.
The offensive production will be spotty at best until most of the evaluation is done & some continuity exists for practice reps. That doesn’t exist. Its taking quite a long time because so many positions are up in the air & a lack of talent. The coaching staff has to settle on who they have the confidence in regardless of talent level at this time because that’s all they’re going to have to work with until another offseason & draft comes about.

This is the Reality Check post of the day. Well said, Tim.
Hilarious Rin keep it up man!
Thigpen is not playing because the chiefs want to get a look at Guitterez against the Viqueens. They aldready know what THigpen is capable of, and Guitterez hasnt gotten much playing time at #4 qb.
Rin,
I love you. That is all.

Keep up the great work Coach Haley. ALL of KC is behind you and we know that you will lead us back to glory very soon now.

Chiefs | Cassel slipping in camp
Wed, 19 Aug 2009 08:22:18 -0700
Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel’s play has slipped since the early portion of training camp.
Cassell struggled during practice Tuesday, Aug. 18, missing some throws. When asked whether Cassel has been the best quarterback in camp, head coach Todd Haley deferred. “I think I’ll hold out on answering that right now,” Haley said.
heh heh heh!!!
All I’m saying is…if all positions are open then why not let Cassell run wit the third or second team b/c its seems like he is performing at that level! That goes 2 show that Haley is a terrible LIAR!!! Why not just say Cassell is my guy and the other 3 are fighting for second or third qb spots…I think would have much more respect for him then this bs of open competition…..Go Chiefs 2009 and beyond!
yeah alex k maybe u should change your name, there is only 1 great one here buddy, now follow my lead……….
Sept. 13, 2009
KC Chiefs defeat the Baltimore Ravens 24-21 in a stunning come from behind victory.
Chiefs starter Matt Cassell tosses a perfect pass to Dwayne Bowe good for a 37 yard TD to tie the game at 21-21 with 3:47 left in the game. 6 plays later nickle back Maurice Leggitt intercepts a pass giving the Chiefs the ball on their own 42 yard line with only :54 seconds remaining. Chiefs work there way downfield to the Ravens 36 yard line. With time running out, rookie kicker Ryan Succop kicks a thrilling 52 yard field goal to end the game, giving the underdog Chiefs their first victory in 2009.
Matt Cassel is 18/24 244 yards. no int’s.
Larry Johnson good for 133 yards in 16 carries.
The surprising Chiefs defense holding the Ravens to a total of 264 yards.
Later that evening, police arrested a man calling himself Rin Tin Tin. Mr. Tin was accused of disturbing the peace.
Mr. Tins neighbors reported they heard blood curdling screams a howls coming from the Tin residence shortly after the Chiefs / Ravens game.
Police later stated that Mr. Tin would remain being held, pending psychiatric evaluation.
Everybody enjoys a good story. I thought I would share one with you all.
Go Chiefs…
Dont be fooled my chiefs fans..Cassell is a brown nosing,over-achiever(1yr) and needs 2 be exposed….(God please prove me wrong..b/c boy do we need a winner)

And then jimbo woke up…in a puddle
I doubt any of us know what we have at 18 of the 22 starting position with the 09 Chiefs. Cassel is just another unknown. But like herm’s chiefs we will find out. So I suggest we do not through anyone under the bus just yet. Guys, do not get wrapped up in comments by retarded self-lovers like Rin/hermstheman. The 09 season is one of hope until it flops like Rin’s lower appendage. But hopes springs eternal, right, rin?
Keep up the great work Coach Haley. ALL of KC is behind you and we know that you will lead us back to glory very soon now.

Bob,
Make the site a $200/yr annual fee. I’ll pay it. Far more upside as a result.
Bob G, I’ll see his $200 and raise it three-fold!
I hope to blog for free because Iam cheap . If Bob would charge by the amount you blog on his site ………..some would have to pay 3 fold.Bob could give discounts on well thought out blogs. Some would probably have to pay full price. PnS
I think it is hilarious that so many think that Thigpen is the best QB on the team. He is a remake of Doug Flutie. Too short to be a long-term solution. He misses passes because he as to throw at an up angle to get over the line. He is exciting on occasion, but nothing more. Good kid, but not starting caliber. Some seem to be judging Cassel on blog reports? Please. He was fine for the most part in his only game action. Needs someone to catch the ball first.
Agreed B in SC Cassell had some drop passes in the pre-season game. You can’t make a possible judgement on this guy in the pre-season come on. Some of you fans are over analyzing this guy way to early in the season. Cassell will be fine will win the division this year and that will shut up alot critics.
B in SC said
“He (Ca$$el aka Money Pit) was fine for the most part in his only game action.”
- in 5 series his went 2 for 5 for a 40% com pct. 15 yards passing for a 3.00 yards per pass avg., a fumble he lost to the other team, threw no tds and produced exactly no/zero/nada/zippity do dah points – ALL THIS for the bargain basement price of just $63 million. What part of him was it was ‘mostly’ ok?
Tell
pre-season doesn’t Mutter- er, matter.
(PS) Don’t bother blaming Rin, the weather, other players or Herm… we’ll leave the lights on for you.
Besides Bill W from the ESPN reports today that Haley is very impressed with Cassell and that he reminds him of Warner. So Cassell hasn’t fall out of the good graces of the head coach. Just another way keep Cassell motivated.
Well if Bill W (who?) said it… that makes it 999 against & one for Mutt. If ESPN be for you who can be against you?
Jimbo love that post.
Speaking of media ignorance, at todays Haley press conference at the mother ship one reporter actually asked if the QBs hitting their check downs was the result of being afraid to throw it downfield. I think Todd Haley must be a very disciplined man. I dont’t know how he holds his temper in the face of such ineptitude. Go watch it if you haven’t already.
Rin love your posts too.
Jonesy, you’re exactly right. These KC media types are so used to clueless inompetetants like Carl and Herm, they don’t know how to deal with a guy who actually knows what’s he’s doing, but isn’t going to share every little detail with them. It’s the Parcells/NE way. EVERY position is up for grabs, is constantly being evaluated, and there’s always a competition. They are trying to read Haley, but he’s not an open book like the prior idiot, so they come up with these nutty theories that hold no water whatsoever. I enjoy watching the video of Haley’s Pressers because you can just see him cracking up inside at some of the stupid questions.
Todd and Scott are clueless incompetents. I wish I’d never come to Kansas City and you’ll be sorry too.
Apparently someone here has a bad case of the manlove for SD jr. Not that there’s anything wrong with that…except that he’s been dead over a decade. Maybe it’s time to update your fantasies to Gregory Hines? He can dance AND he’s still alive. Just a thought.
Doormat needs a brain.
Sorry brother. My mistake: G Hines is gone too. But I’m pretty sure that Savion Glover is still here, so turn that fantasy into action and send that “fanmail”. Here you buddy…
