And The Choice Is …

From the Truman Sports Complex

I’ve waited as long as I can, so here goes my guess on the Chiefs No. 1 choice in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Drafting out of the No. 21 slot, the Chiefs will select:

OT Gabe Carimi … or OLB Akeem Ayers … or OT Tyron Smith … or ….

Let’s do this methodically because that’s how Chiefs GM Scott Pioli will handle things in the draft room.

We covered this the last two days with offense and defense. Here’s where they are ranked based on how needy those positions are on the current roster:

  • Wide receiver
  • Interior offensive line
  • Nose tackle
  • Outside linebacker
  • Inside linebacker
  • Offensive tackle

We will list them by position and based on quality and overall standing in the entire draft pool:

  • WR – A.J. Green, Julio Jones, Torrey Smith.
  • C/G – Mike Pouncey, Danny Watkins.
  • NT – Marcell Dareus, Nick Fairley, Corey Liuget, Phil Taylor.
  • OLB – Aldon Smith, Ryan Kerrigan, Akeem Ayers, Justin Houston.
  • ILB – Martez Wilson.
  • OT – Andy Castonzo, Gabe Carimi, Tyron Smith, Nate Solder.

That’s 18 players, but there are 20 players who will be selected ahead of the Chiefs pick, so we know some of the above players will not be available. Let’s eliminate those players and see what we have left:

  • WR – Torrey Smith.
  • C/G – Danny Watkins.
  • NT – Corey Liuget, Phil Taylor.
  • OLB – Ryan Kerrigan, Akeem Ayers, Justin Houston.
  • ILB – Martez Wilson.
  • OT – Gabe Carimi, Tyron Smith, Nate Solder.

That’s now 11 players to consider. Based on information, but largely as guess, let’s line those 11 up by how most teams have them listed on their board:

Liuget, Kerrigan, Carimi, Ayers, Tyron Smith, Taylor, Solder, Wilson, Houston, Watkins, Torrey Smith

The odds tell us one or two of those players will be taken ahead of the Chiefs, so take that into consideration.

So if you want to figure out who might be wearing red and gold in the fall, start with the first name on that list that might still be available.

I’m going to venture that Liuget and Kerrigan will both be taken by the time it comes to No. 21, so that puts Carimi, Ayers and Tyron Smith at the top of the draft board.

One of those three will be the Chiefs first-round draft choice.
