"On the other hand our offense is the worst by far….fewest points scored in the division during the meaningless preseason. But there is always the potential for growth…..rookies that improve faster than anyone anticipated….players gelling together better than anyone dared think?"

Harold, if you read this, which is what you wrote, it seems to be implying that the offense has rookies that could improve...

"I definitely think the wide receivers are better than poor … not good but average with the hope that Bowe has a break-out year. With a good to great RB group we should see the opposing D have to play up to stop the run. This will open up Bowe, with some one-on-one action, creating a break-out season for him."

Interesting thoughts. Will Bowe get opened up to catch passes or will he get extra double teams and various exotic pass defense schemes since the BrainTrust traded away our #1 safety valve Mr. Gonzalez? Who's going to be a threat besides D-Bowe?

"...with the addition of O’Callaghan, the O-line has gotten better."

Is it truly better or are we hoping against hope that Cassel, Brodie, and LJ won't spend 1/2 the season on IR? This has been a very dangerous game that Pioli and Haley have played, knowing what they did about last year's carryovers (or what they should have known).

I do like the fact that Pioli did finally take action to try to shore this up. I'm a bit concerned he waited until August to start addressing this problem.

Ouch .. a little harsh. IMO, with the addition of O'Callaghan, the O-line has gotten better. I think Goff still has a couple of strong years in him and the left side is solid. So if Rudy can get it together we should be pleased with the O-line. I definitely think the wide receivers are better than poor ... not good but average with the hope that Bowe has a break-out year. With a good to great RB group we should see the opposing D have to play up to stop the run. This will open up Bowe, with some one-on-one action, creating a break-out season for him. My biggest area of concern is our returner. I just don't see anyone, on the roster, that creates any real threat as a returner. If ther's anyone released that has any skills we need to pick'em up immediately. Bottomline, we've taken a step forward but we're still a year or two away from being a playoff team.

Rin haha you think the season started in preseason huh? Well let me fill you in. The Detriot Lions went 4-0 last year in the preseason. You know the rest of the story... you don't even understand the intricacies of football do you? How the play calling differs from preseason to the regular season? Simple stuff like that?? Nah you'd rather continue to make a fool of yourself. Well what would you expect from.. well a fool? lol.

I should stop making Clark Hunt look like a fool when he says the following regarding Scott Pioli:

On putting together a leadership group with Scott Pioli:

"The sports business is largely a people business. I feel, to be successful and have a chance to reach our goal of realistically competing for a championship, the most important thing I could do is have the best leadership group in the National Football League.

"The first move in that regard was bringing in Scott Pioli as our general manager.

"At the time I hired him I think I said I felt he was the finest executive in the National Football League. And now, eight or nine months later, I feel exactly the same. He has more than lived up to my expectations.

"He's somebody I would describe as all substance. One of the most hard working individuals I've ever been around. Somebody who is extremely knowledgeable.

"He truly is an excellent evaluator of football talent. He's somebody who doesn't push all that responsibility on someone on his staff. He seeks input from his staff but at the end of the day relies on his judgment.

"The changes I've seen on the roster over the short period he's been here tells me we've got the right guy."

Hmmmm.. I'm having second thoughts.. maybe I should stop being such a cock bite and see what a doucher I've become and apologize to the good Lord for all the wasted months of my life spent accomplishing absolutely nothing I set out to in the first place. Somehow I've not managed to convince one person to change their opinion and I now realize I've got to get a life. Man what a waste!!

HermRin-math, where the credit is taken where it wasn't earned...and the blame is given where it should have been taken.

Nope by your own analysis, those weren't Herm's men (not even worthy of a nice try). Apparently you do claim Sackintosh - who you can have. However, as Haley hinted...they did have a nice punter.

arrowhead1978 said: "who are these rookies you are talking about growing faster on offense??"

Did I say that arrowhead1978? Did I specify offense in my statement? My comment was:
"But there is always the potential for growth…rookies that improve faster than anyone anticipated…players gelling together better than anyone dared think?"
I didn't specify offence or defense in that statement. I did cover everybody though....rookies and veterans.

Why thank you Larry. Its nice to have someone agree with me. The fact that I made you up and replied to my self as ‘Larry’ makes no difference to me. Surely no one will figure that out. Shhhh!

Yes I'm the real one. Keep posting the truth Rin. By the time this season is half way done so will the Chiefs be.

That's why they protest against you so much, they know you're right.

New Offense. New Defense. New Coaching Staff. A team dominated by at best, mediocre players. If the Chiefs go 5-11, I'd be impressed. Heck, that would more than double last year's wins!

I don't think many of us realize just how bad this team was last year. Personally, I think they were probably worse than their record showed.

But I truly do believe in what Pioli and Haley are doing. It takes time folks, to rebuild and entire organization from the ground up. Keep your heads up this season, next season will be more fun to watch, and the following season will be really exciting! I betcha!

Man, Peterson and Edwards really left our team in a mess though, didn't they?

"Rin"

- yes you old woman, what is it now?

"who are your “Herm’s Men” Chiefs that are all these starters?"

- already enumerated elsewhere more than once... let your fingers do the walking through the blog (remove same first from self, aft)

"I hope you’re not trying to claim LJ, Waters, Derrick Johnson, since they were there long before Herm was."

- willst your hopes be dashed? Be, nee are. As Herm was here before  will have to give any/all wins '09 to Herm then, as such... yes?

"Technically wouldn’t those be “Verm’s Men” Chiefs or Gun’s Men Chiefs?"

- technically  is a football coach, but in reality he's just a failed golf pro an handicap - a football coach sans the knack - as in 0-4.

"You however can claim Pollard who’s no longer with the team and Turk McBride, the 2nd rounder who’s now trying hard to be a backup linebacker. You can have Wade Smith, Herb Taylor, B-Rinch, guys who weren’t good enough to start for a group graded as “Poor.”

- Zach Thomas, Amani Toomer & Pat Ways CJ Jones, Robertson, Jones, Redd + Tanner Purdham, Lelie & all the other 71% signee 'BUSTS' theirs courtesy the not so much astute as estupido lack a talent knack  - Herm/Carl NEVER did it so BADLY.

"You can have the potential starter Cottam (who leads the group of TE’s graded as poor)."

- and you may have both  & - who collectively were heralded - don't get excited there Harold C - as "the best GM & Head Coach" candidates in all the NFL! Now, an off-season, OTAs, training camp and an 0-4 preseason later - "how do you like them now?"

Of all the new GM/Head Coaches in the NFL, they rank as THE WORST - poorest, only winless same.

"For fairness, We’ll all collectively disown Sackintosh."

- his career will have proven longer than either O'Callagag or "Clippers"...

Pollard will end up somewhere... Who knows he could end up playing for Denver in a week or two... I think the chiefs really should grab John Runyan, since they're in the market for older veteran type players.. Im sure he could still play RT for the chiefs...

Really, well Herm did draft the best player we have right now, actually the best 4 players on the team right now and close 5th, Flowers, Carr, Page, Leggett and Bowe... actually I would lump Alberts into that group also, hmm... Makes the rest of the team look surprisingly unattractive without those 6 players doesn't it...

Harold C, who are these rookies you are talking about growing faster on offense?? I dont think they have any rookies on offense, other then Lawrence which I do not see breaking into the starting WR corp barring injury to Engram...

You however can claim Pollard who’s no longer with the team and Turk McBride, the 2nd rounder who’s now trying hard to be a backup linebacker. You can have Wade Smith, Herb Taylor, B-Rinch, guys who weren’t good enough to start for a group graded as “Poor.” You can have the potential starter Cottam (who leads the group of TE’s graded as poor).

For fairness, We’ll all collectively disown Sackintosh.

Rin, Herm left them with a bunch of bad draft choices you couldn't get beans for(see Pollard)

"LJ will have a probowl season."

Without a decent line to block for him and our great set of "blocking" TE's, are his odds higher to make the Pro Bowl...or to be injured for 4-8 games during the season? Pioli and Haley had months to address the painful lessons of 2007/2008 and...did...maybe...maybe not? Wait, we must have since we traded Gonzalez. The clock is indeed ticking.

Ok....I just discovered that I misspoke earlier. I said that the Chiefs defense allowed the fewest points in the division during preseason. I just saw on the ESPN Chiefs page that I am wrong. The Chargers allowed 4 fewer points than the Chiefs. I could have sworn I saw differently before but I guess not. Oh well....life goes on.

I wonder....how often do the preseason records agree with the final real season records?

OK so I would just like to respond to the accusations that took place over the weekend by my neighbors that I am some sort of kiddie fiddler. First of all I don't know what "kiddie fiddler" means. But I love him. His parents will never understand.

Glad to see most other people are tired of Rin and his ridiculous statements. He goes so far as to post as other names to agree with himself. Then since he can't debate on a factual/logical level he has to post as myself to distract and confuse. He must be racist or something. Something in Pioli and the fact that he happens to be white must really threaten him and his corrupted world view...

Poor...is the grade I would give the idea for this analysis and the analysis itself.

It's pointless to grade the units right now. The team will play under an entirely new coaching staff, with new schemes. They've got new starters in many key areas, new veterans and new rookies throughout the team. It's unknown at this point how all this will mess together, or how long it will take.

You never know from year to year which players will take a big step up in their development, or rapidly decline. You never know how much impact a top-notch veteran presence will have on young players, or vise-versa. Team chemistry also should not be overlooked, and that takes time to mature.

It's just too soon.

Rin....who cares? Nobody cares about Herm or what he did anymore. We care about what happens now. The minuite Haley/Pioli finalised the roster, everybody on the roster became thier Chiefs. Herm is gone.....we don't care about him anymore. Your already boring gibberish has become even more unbelievably boring. That is why I can't get past more than two sentences that you write before I give up and skip to the next post. You really don't have much of anything to contribute here....do you? If you find yourself having to bring up Herm then I can only conclude that you really don't have anything to talk about but you stupidly talk anyway. Makes you look idiotic. You are boring even your few missguided fans....if there ever truly were any. I don't think anyone is really enjoying this nonsense that you post....except maybe you. I know you can post like a normal person. Why don't you. People would actuly read what you say and not have the word "IDIOT" going through their mind at the same time. I know you can Rin....you have done it once or twice before. Why contiunue the stupidity? I'm just trying to help you Rin. No....I'm really just trying to help the rest of us I admit.

Rin, you're arguing against yourself(and losing both sides).
"Not only are 64% of the Chiefs Herm’s Men Chiefs, 16 out of 21 starting positions are ‘also’ Herm’s Men Chiefs!

7 on offense, 7 on defense & 2 on special teams – that proves that Herm is STILL The Man and found talented players in all 3 phases of ‘team

“he was not to far off about the fountain being set.”"

If Herm is the man and found such talented players then why this:
" – no change at all!” 2009 …’cept no W’s stead of 2 perhaps. "

You'd think such talent could win a few games.

i wonder how well Morgan is doing?? Is he looking better then Pollard was? I know it's not going to be long before Brown goes on the IR, has every year since his probowl year... Not to say that he can't play, just stating the facts about his being available the whole season...

Pollard will probably get picked up by the Lions or the Eagles since they need some depth at the position...

Just got back from a nice long weekend with family and friends and happy that real football has started.

Rin...wow. All I can say is how sad. Poor soul, you certainly look like you had a nice long weekend too...blogging and obsessing about anything and everything that is wrong with the Chiefs.

For your own good, please realize there is more to life than getting on bobgretz.com and KCSTAR.com and ragging on the Chiefs all the time (unless it keeps you from stalking, then by all means, carry on.)

Go Chiefs!!

Harold C, we are on the same page. Until of course the Ravens break of a 83 yard run, Then Damarcus Russel throws for 300 yards week 2 and we are back in the same kettle of fish. But hey, it's football season and you and I (at least) can be optimistic. Enough talk of 4 wins, if we stink again we all know the drill; I think we have real reson to hope....finally, change I can believe in...

Todd B said "I think most folks will be surprised by the level of play. 8-8 in 2009."

Todd B.....I agree....I said this a month or two ago. I had a dream.....Chiefs go 8 & 8 and yet win the division anyway. Ok....so it's a dream.....or is it?

Anyway.....going by Bob's grades the Chiefs are poor on offense overall....leaning a hair toward average, and average on defense overall....leaning toward good. Now lets face it....lots of people grade the football teams before the season starts and nobody is ever right about it....or almost never right. What does this mean? It means either the Chiefs are going to be worse than last year.....or they will at least be average. I am betting on average.....and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if average puts us in the running for the division when it comes down to those last few games in December. Our defense is our strength right now. Has anybody noticed that we allowed the fewest points in the division during the meaningless preseason? On the other hand our offense is the worst by far....fewest points scored in the division during the meaningless preseason. But there is always the potential for growth.....rookies that improve faster than anyone anticipated....players gelling together better than anyone dared think? Possibly....possibly. Average is what I think we are in store for.....maybe leaning toward something more.......maybe.

This community needs to be moderated. Its getting completely ridiculous.

Now... about the Chiefs.

I would agree with all the rankings excepting the WR position. In my opinion, having a top 10 receiver in the league (or 15 maybe, 10 may be generous) and 2 average receivers (Engram and Bradley) and of course the completely awful Copper would leave you with an Average grade. Add good coaching from someone experienced with WR and you have a Average receiving corp not a poor one.

Other than that I agree with everything.

One thing you didn't cover, Bob: how's the rest of special teams looking? Those blockers, wedge busters, gunners, etc? I get the impression we've improved by putting some bigger, more atheletic and more conditioned guys on the field.

also - we shouldn't go buy one or two great seasons. We need solid drafts and a continual stream of talent year in and out. DV didn't do that...

deployed - I think DV left us with an old team with no replacements and didn't do a good job of drafting either. After he was gone we were left for dead pretty much.

With reguards to Herm and his transition to rebuilding, I just don't believe if DV was still around both sides of the ball would have been terrible. Does anybody agree with me.

As i can tell from reading everybodies opinions, i can tell everybody feels the same about DJ as me(not concerned). I was ready to let Bob have it concerning Colquit but he said he was overworked and received a high grade by himself. I'd like to see Justin Miller come in for PR-KR duties but i'm not going to cry over it. I remember in 07 when the kr for DET came and was gighting for a roster spot with BJ Sams and both were terrible. One last thing with the Wildcat becoming the new trend i wish we still had Casey Printers for some variation( yes more than Thigpen). Go Chiefs!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the end of course we hated Herm for everything; but let's a least given him his due with regard to moving the team in the right direction. He believed that the improvement of these young players was the key to his football team. If those guys (above) become the centerpoint of a great team then Herm deserves some credit. If not, we can just continue to look at him as an absolute failure. I remain open minded until the jury is back.

What's happening with Pollard? KC made right decision with depth in secondary, but it will be interesting to see how Bernard does elsewhere.

OL is still a work. Do you still believe that 6-5 Niswanger is our center? Would rather see him at guard. Right side is still a big concern (center-tackle).

Herm deserves credit for starting rebuilding project. But it appears we have the right guys to get us back to the promised land. Just not this year.

Bob,

I'd like to see your grades for our Offensive and Defensive coordinators.

The "Right 53" means the Chiefs are hoping they have a bonus grade for teamwork and coaching. There is something to be said for that--- if it happens.

If the Chiefs are well coached, smart on the field, in shape and fairly healthy, they can be fun to watch. After watching the first halves of the pre-season games, it appeared to my eyes that the Chiefs are more disciplined and better coached. The defense swarms to the ball and appears to be in position.

The offense is frustrating and will be until the line is solved. I have some hope that RG and RT will see new faces by Week 2. Not that we will have a strong line, but improved from opening day.

I am excited to see if Haley can have an impact on the offense with smart/creative play calling. Frankly, I'd like to see Thigpen used a little like Vick--- if nothing else, as a decoy.

That being said, I'd be happy if Succup had several 5 field goal games and the defense kept us close. We'll see.

DanKCFan (who for all I know is Rin/Scott/Larry/Idiot) - while it is true some of our young players were drafted by Herm. It doesn't surprise me either he had an eye for good defensive backs since he used to be one himself (Leggett/Flowers). However, only 13 of his 26 picks remain on the team..

What surprises me a bit is that the right 53 is made up of 64% of players left over from a 2-14 team last year. So as much as we did not like Herm maybe just maybe he was not to far off about the fountain being set.

We played a lot of rookies last year, they will improve in year #2 and elevate these rankings. Look for improvement in the young players that played a lot as rookies. That is what Herm said and on that count I agree with him. Look for gains with Dorsey, Flowers, Carr, Legget, Rudy, Charles, Cottam, Croyle and Albert. I think most folks will be surprised by the level of play. 8-8 in 2009.

Larry, I see a much improved defense and an offense that will continue to improve as the season goes on. Too bad you expect the new front office to somehow make a terrible post-Herm team and make them a playoff team in one offseason... even the "man in the hoodie" couldn't muster more than five wins in his first head coaching stint in Cleveland. Where were the "genius" comparisons then? Who was responsible for giving "the genius" the players to win those Super Bowls? Hey lol at least you don't refer to yourself in the third person.

Aaron you think it's sad? What did you expect? Aren't you over the failure? The team is now going in the right direction. We as fans should turn over a new leaf as well. Quit feeling sorry for yourself and know that things will be getting better. Cheer up bubba.

3 poors, 4 averages & but a single good Bob G's count... 4 poors, 3 average and 1 good be Rin's grade. Any way you add em up, for all the over- hype 'search' & 'check' will be "no change - no change at all!" 2009 ...'cept no W's stead of 2 perhaps.

The Chiefs, courtesy  & , have done nary a thing to improve the KC team in 2009 - all they have succeeded in doing is making Rin's team older...arranged the deck chairs on the Titanic - exchanged one set of brown shoes for another when the event called for black tux with tails.

Relics Toomer and Thomas already failed nee gave out, Goff, Brown, Engram & Vrabel are running on fumes. Draft busts too litter a Kaycee landscape, Williams & Brown. No obvious help was signed in free agency and it shows- the best they could do was succeed with 29% of their signees - failure rate as such being 71%.

Herm left the Chiefs with a fine young nucleus of talent, had succeeded in cutting out the halt and the lame, and had things on an upswing. Then, aft
but 1 year of building a foundation, had the rug pulled out from under him.

Now all hope has been lost, all progress blunted, the one question remaining: 'how long will it be until the next 'fresh start beginning' new GM/HC arrive to replace ones here now. No later end of 2010, Rin's guess.

"We want to win NOW" the refrain Egoli & Hailme - anytime you're ready fellers. So far, has been no wins going forward - four giant steps nee losses backwards ... and the meter is still running.

Missouri's still waiting for some sign 'Show Me', any similarity that 'Patriot Way' thingamajimmy.
So far, Robertson, Jones, Redd & O'Callaghan doth suggest East Coast swang don't mean a thang when you gots the Kansas City blues.

As Rin has said since 2008, it isn't the coaching - though Herm & Co. were far more impressive than have  and his Illuminati Clique been - it is still the players or lack thereof, more so.

Alas... to date has proven no more adept than Carl P at finding talent... so much for all the spin. Appears that it was the man the hoodie doing all the heavy lifting after all...
