Afternoon Practice Update 8/5
From River Falls, Wisconsin
It was practice No. 20 for the Chiefs here in the northwoods and it was another short, but crisply worked session as the team gets ready for their visit to Chicago on Thursday.
There were no new players taking time off and the same injured players absent in the morning, were out in the afternoon. TE Tony Gonzalez was back and participating in the work.
Here are a couple of position notes based on how the players get on the field during practice. Right now at cornerback they looked like they are ranked in this order: Brandon Flowers, Pat Surtain, Brandon Carr, Dimitri Patterson and Will Poole. Tuesday afternoon’s No. 2 defense was Turk McBride/Derek Lokey/T.J. Jackson/Brian Johnston across the front, with LeRue Rumph/Wes Dacus/E.J. Kuale at linebacker and then Carr and Patterson with DaJuan Morgan and Jon McGraw at safety.
There were 24 plays of teamwork between offense and defense. The offense had positive plays nine times. WR Maurice Price is starting to make a move and he had a couple nice catches. QB Brodie Croyle was 10 for 10 in his passing. That included a catch by WR Dwayne Bowe that first went off the hands of WR Devard Darling, then went off the hands of a defender with Bowe making a diving catch behind everybody. RB Larry Johnson took another direct snap from center and picked up five yards; it seems that play is worth a minimum of five yards every time it’s called by coordinator Chan Gailey.
Defensively, CB Rashard Barksdale had an interception and McGraw dropped another one.
QB Tyler Thigpen led the offense in the two-minute drill and the Chiefs got off nine plays in 67 seconds, but the possession ended when Morgan intercepted Thigpen’s pass near the end zone. The big play of the possession was a Thigpen scramble up the middle for 22 yards on a third-and-10 play.
The Chiefs will have just one practice on Wednesday.

Mr. Gretz,
I have been reading that Khayyam Burns is having a rather good training camp…do you think he can unseat Jon McGraw as the 4th safety? I am assuming that special teams play will be the deciding factor. Has Burns shone any on special teams like he has on defense?
Bob stated in an answer to me that Burns will have a rough time due to how well Mcgraw has played in camp.
not to mention his own special teams play.
