Afternoon Practice Update 8/10

From River Falls, Wisconsin

Sunday afternoon’s practice was certainly an interesting one for the Chiefs defense.

When the workout came to its final session, the two-minute drill, Gunther Cunningham unveiled a new wrinkle to his 3-3-5 defense to throw against the offense.  He had Tank Tyler, Brian Johnston and Jason Parker on the line, with Pat Thomas, Derrick Johnson and Demorrio Williams at linebacker and five defensive backs.

But Williams has lining up as a defensive end and rushing the passer off the left side.  He was unstoppable as RT Damion McIntosh struggled to slow him down.  Williams showed great speed and great leverage as he went low, forcing McIntosh to bend his knees, which he does not do well.  And for whatever reason, this all seemed to light a fire under Johnston.  Largely silent throughout this training camp, suddenly the seventh-round pick was boring in on Brodie Croyle as well.

Pass rushers are not allowed to touch the quarterback in these drills and that’s a good thing, because Croyle would be very bruised and battered just from the 11 plays of the two-minute drill.  Croyle was three-of-seven throwing the ball (not counting two spikes to stop the clock.)

It was a fairly short workout, as the team ran just 32 plays of teamwork on the afternoon.   The offense did not turn the ball over and won their share of the snaps.  The defense had several sacks and a couple near interceptions.  On 13 snaps inside the defense’s 15-yard line, the offense scored just once on a burst through the left side by Larry Johnson.

Not taking part in the practice were WR Kevin Robinson (knee), LT Branden Albert (foot), G Tre Stallings (knee), LB Donnie Edwards (hamstring), LB Napoleon Harris (knee), DE Trevor Johnson (concussion) and S Jon McGraw (shoulder).  Again, DT Glenn Dorsey (knee) was on the field, took part in individual work, but did not practice as part of the defense.  RB Kolby Smith (groin) took a regular turn with the offense.

    Bob,

Do you think Jason Parker makes the roster?
Do you think Maurice Price will make the roster?
Who has looked the best as a kick returner and a punt returner? Thanks

    Bob,

Long time listener, first time caller.

The good news: your analysis of this team and its finer points is second to none, so good on you for that.

The bad news: Pointing out the weaknesses of potential starters can be detrimental, as non-fans (read: opponents who study all news regarding our team) could use this information against us. Granted, McIntosh proved last year that he couldn’t bend his knees, so this is nothing new. However, calling it out only provides fodder for d-line and db coaches as they plan to play against us. I realize you want to give an honest perspective, but at what point do you hold crucial information back in order to maintain the much-needed integrity of our team, let alone its offensive line?

    Josh,
if you think that Bob’s opinion will change another teams gameplan you are nuts…Please, that is so ridiculous, you do realize how many people scout and prepare the team for a game…Do you know if Nick Canepa has said anything bad about any SD starters? No…because thats just ridiculous, and I guarentee that Herm doesnt read the Union Tribune.(an example)

Plus, its a known fact that Mcintosh has trouble bending his knees, its why hes having such a hard time with the position switch to the right side despite playing right guard in his career….

So, saying that Page cant tackle Mike Cloud without a full head of steam would hurt the integrity of our secondary? please.

Bob, thanks again for all the helpful updates, even with NFL Sunday Ticket, nothing comes close to this type of information.

Best regards from the Gansz family.–

Bob, I’d like to see a full depth chart of your predictions on the final roster. Could we get that? The cuts are going to be very interesting!

  • August 11, 2008  - Josh Hull says:

    Alex,

You missed my point entirely (aside from reiterating my statement that McIntosh’s issues are known.) Given that Bob’s mentioned that few if any media have been present in training, scouts might take an interest in the one guy who’s providing daily, in-depth analysis of the team. If the job were mine, would I scout less? No. Would I read what Bob has to say about a team I’m about analyze myself? You bet I would. The question I posed was at what point is it detrimental to broadcast issues a team is facing, particularly if those issues would have merit for the savvy scout. Thanks for your input, though.

I’d like to see some of this 3-3-5 defense. Hopefully they bust it out this Saturday.

    Hey Josh,

How long has McIntosh been in the league? What like 10 years? Don’t you think that pass rushers around the league watch tape trying to learn how to attack this guy? I’m sure that the people around the league know the weaknesses of Damion. I think the only people who can benefit from this information are the average fan who do not have access to those same game tapes.

Absolutely love this site. Being all the the way out here in the Pacific, info on my much love Chiefs is limited to say the least. I’ve always enjoyed your writting. Like your “Hail to the Chiefs” back in ‘94.

Bob, thanks for your honest opnions, thats all we can ask for.

What about Swamp Thing in the 3-3-5? He’ll be ready by Sept.
