Afternoon Practice Update 7/26

From River Falls, Wisconsin

The Chiefs were back on the field for a session wearing shoulder pads but not football pants.  However, that did not cause a drop in the intensity at all, as the hitting was louder and stronger than in the morning practice with full pads.

Glenn Dorsey was on the field and moved right into one of the starting tackle spots on the defense.  He looked like he was in good shape and seemed to handle the afternoon well.  He also had several big-league battles with veteran LG Brian Waters and I must say that Waters won most of them.  In fact, in just two on-field practices, Waters has easily been one of the most impressive performers.

The Chiefs did a pass protection-pass rush drill twice during the session.  Right off the bat was DE Tamba Hali against LT Branden Albert.  On the first snap they battled to a draw, but Hali got the advantage on the second play as he would have flushed the quarterback out of the pocket.  These two had a second series of rushes, with Albert getting the edge this time.  Talk about a battle of athletes.  This one will be fun to watch throughout camp.

Dorsey and Waters were next and Waters stopped the rookie twice.  C Rudy Niswanger battled DT Ron Edwards to a pair of draws, while RG Adrian Jones did a good job on DE-DT Alfonso Boone.  RT Damion McIntosh had some problems with DE Turk McBride.

McBride has added weight and looks very good and very active right now.  When the Chiefs go to their No. 1 nickel defense, they bring Edwards and MLB Napoleon Harris off the field and insert McBride at RDE, moving Boone inside.  The extra defensive back is either Pat Surtain or Brandon Carr, depending on who started in the base defense.

The Chiefs offense did a lot of work on the running game during the two team sessions.  They also ran a number of quarterback boots or roll outs, probably a half-dozen among the 30+ plays of team practice. Expect to see the Chiefs quarterback on the move in 2008.

To make room for Dorsey on the roster, the Chiefs released S Ron Girault, a rookie free agent out of Rutgers.

They have one practice scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

I’m very curious to see what becomes of Turk McBride this year. The news has been really quiet about him.

I think he will have a big year this year because he did train with Jared Allen in the offseason.

Love the site, Bob. Keep the great info coming!

I’m especially interested about the right side of both lines. Please keep focusing on your thoughts about the Boone/Turk/Johnston situation and Jones/McIntosh.

I think those spots on both sides of the ball will be a big factor on how this season goes.

Alfonso Boone and Turk McBride would be playing on the Left side rather than the Right side of the D-Line. (The LDE would play over the RT.) Good news on McBride. A #2 pick has to be a major contributor.
