Haley is not Parcells. Hopefully he is not trying to be. He needs to establish his own identity and I have a feeling he will. Bob is right though. If the Chiefs do not see success sooner than later Haley's approach will blow up in his face. I believe in some of what Haley is doing but he better show these guys some respect and he had better not run them into the ground if he expects them to play for him when it really counts.

Someone heard on the radio that Dorsey is a bust, and what? Saying that on the radio a week into camp makes about as much sense as giving it any credence. No one knows that right now, and no one will for quite awhile.

Most new coach's come in with a ball breaking mentality. In order for them to get the job, the other guy must have screwed the pooch. It would seem that a change is needed to get things going in the right direction. Some ease up as time goes on, but I don't think that will be Haley's style. Give 'em hell Haley!

I love the post about "digging ditches". These guys are paid well to be athlete's. Last time I checked that meant that you need to practice, for long hours, the sport that you love. I guess that some of those guys have a different definition?

Yeah gorillafan...I think he knows his job is on the line. So he's likely to say just about anything.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Shanahan coaching in Dallas next year. No matter what happens this year.

I know this is off the subject, but I like how Wade phillips in on front page of espn.com and heading says how he changed his philosophy this year and not being a "players coach" anymore. ha.

more reassuring Haley knows what he is doing

http://www.rotoworld.com/content/home_NFL.aspx
The Chiefs have reportedly agreed to terms with DE Tyson Jackson, the No. 3 overall pick in the draft, on a five-year contract.
Details have not been disclosed. Jason Smith, the No. 2 overall pick, received $33 million and last year's No. 3 overall, Matt Ryan, received $34.5 million. Jackson will likely come in at around $30 million guaranteed. This deal should help speed up negotiations between the Seahawks and Aaron Curry.

Real Rin ® daddy-o sez -

GB hasn't signed their NT and #1 pick, BJ Raji - whom they have spoken about moving to DE; Kaycee liked Raji as a NT according to reports. Jackson is a DE, and he is also unsigned. GB needs help at DE as indicated (they're also running a 3/4.)

Hmm.

Yup.

Don't know anymore what with players union etc what is/isn't allowed sign and trade but could such be the seeds of said each team?

Rin knows in MLB the rules do not allow teams to trade a draft pick(s) before a selection is made, & that extends to a team not being able to trade a draftee even aft he is signed (in other words, that MLB rookie has to remain with the franchise for some period of time - at least a season?)

Window shopping nee day dreaming, maybe throw in one of our own NT's (Edwards/Tyler) and get Raji plus an extra fairly high draft pick from GB in 2010 (say a low 2nd or 3rd rounder perhaps?)

Then of course problem becomes the DE spot lost KC, leaving Magee, Dorsey and a no name cast of others (maybe McBride moves back to DE) but the NT spot is set/the holdout problem 2 teams fini.

Merely a lateral move (though an extra pick in 2010 is garnered) or a solution to the current situation. Don't think it would happen even if possible, but if it could, which one?

In other words, if you could only have one, which would it be: a TY or a BJ?

I was not a fan of letting herm go, because I wanted to see him finish the rebuilding process. But the more I hear the more I like about Todd Haley. This is how football is supposed to be, that's how I was coached, and it is a proven method for success, I'll take the younger version of Bill Parcells any day of the week, b/c he has proven he is a winner where ever he went. This is better than marty ball, our coach plays to win.

I couldn't stand marty's conservative approach on offense same for Herm. Haley will dictate to the defense not play it safe, and I like that. aggression produces results, and this team will be aggressive and in shape.

Another thought that's occured to me that is germaine to this thread and it relates to the critical importance of getting good consistent players in the draft, especially with the first round picks. The Chiefs have been below the Mendoza line on this measurement, meaning lots of teams are better and many are worse or in the same boat.

Reminds me of the Jags. They seem to get older and worse. You just can't miss on those top draft picks over a five year span. Cripples you for another 5. The Jags have only hit on Henderson as a #1 pick since 2000. Most of their first rounders aren't on the team any more...Lefty, Matt Jones, Reggie Williams, Stroud.

So the Tyson Jackson signing ALONG WITH his solid performance (hopefully) will be another sign these are a new breed of Chiefs in the making.

 Anybody here, seen my old friend Jackson - can you tell me where he's gone?

As the (also Ty-lishly late) aphorist EM Cioran said regards life itself: "what to do, where to go? Do nothing & go nowhere, easy enough."

OPTIONS: A tale of one team's woe w/KC connection.

Benefit hindsight, The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a bit of a Bo Bo their OWN Jackson back in 1986 - drafting and then forfeiting the RB's rights; he sat out of football that year and instead played baseball. His name back into the draft hopper he was drafted by the Raiders in the 1987 draft the next year.

Raiders win, Tampa loses, KC Royals get crumbs.

* Al Davis = GOD?

- - - - -

Baseball Ty?

Action Jackson is about the same size as Phillies 1st baseman Ryan Howard, so...maybe? Nah.

Other avenues for football? The AFL went bust so that's out, but the CFL is always an option.

* Ty = penny$ wise & 294 pound foolish?

- - - - -

If  is as deft as some folks think (Rin is not one of his believers), why not just call Ty's bluff and let him sit out? What is there to lose, really?

It's a new regime, a new team, the Chiefs aren't going anywhere but home the holidays anyway...do it 'search' - show us the Patriot Way - you know, like you did on draft day when got stuck holding the bag otherwise known the #3 draft pick entire draft that became Tyson Jackson; a Jimmy Johnson wouldn't have gotten stuck like that nor would a few others that come to mind.)

* :shock: = amateur?

Time for a song, and a drink:

"What Do You Do With A Drunken Sailor"

What'll we do with a drunken sailor,
What'll we do with a drunken sailor,
What'll we do with a drunken sailor,
Earl-aye in the morning?

Way hay and up she rises, way hay & up she rises, way hay & up she rises earl-aye in the morning

Put him in the long boat till he's sober, put him in the long boat till he's sober, put him in the long boat till he's sober, earl-aye in the morning

Keep him there & make 'im bale 'er, keep him there & make 'im bale 'er, keep him there & make 'im bale 'er, earl-aye in the morning

Shave his belly with a rusty razor, shave his belly with a rusty razor, shave his belly with a rusty razor, earl-aye in the morning.

Put him in bed with the captain's daughter, put him in bed with the captain's daughter, put him in bed with the captain's daughter, earl-aye in the morning.

Well that's one possible remedy...thing is, he might like sleeping in late with the Captain's daughter more than attending Stalag

thats why we need a cap for rookies, like many of us mention before. bad thing is that the "commish" wont do it. Too much revenue...

players holding out just gives more news to be read or seen on tv. more publicity, more ratings, more commercials, ect ect ect.

I think the "commish" needs to quit beeing greedy as well. But i know he did take a pay cut, but im talking from the business stand point. everyone wants to run a successful business, but you have to do whats best for others and/or your sport as well.

Just wondering?? T. Jackson, why is/was he such a got-to-have for the Chiefs?? Hate to miss on a 1st rounder but the season will not be postponed if Jackson holds out. Do not really care about 2010 yet. Heck we missed on more draft picks over the year, what is one more??

Sounds like everyone is drinking the kool aid and that goes for me too. Enjoyed most of what everyone posted and totally agree. I also live in the Dallas area and Parcells did a great job here just Jerry got in the way of finishing. I believe Pioli will let Haley handle things.

Now as for Jack$on since he has decided to play the money game. I'd just pull my offer lower it and say here it is if you want to play take it if not see ya in the offseason. If he misses anymore he won't be ready until the middle of the season I hope they don't waste money on this chump. Not to say he can't play but what has he done?

"To Dog"

- or not to Dog - that is the question...

"you have answered your own question about the chiefs."

- if Rin did that, it had to be because He is the only one of such a vintage & well read enough who knew the answer; the fuzzy-cheeked faction herein gets tedious to suffer aft awhile.

However, you were nee are wrong... let us peruse further, shall we?

"Players did complain about Stram playing them in preseason what you failed to see that Stram is / was/ the only coach that got the Chiefs to play in 2 Super Bowls."

- Rin fails at nothing... the player 'quote' He that is I Rin used came from the late Chiefs LB Sherrill Headrick - during the 1967 season, one where KC went 9-5 and finished a distant second place behind the Raiders, this after a Superbowl KC team the year before.

Rin knows far better than you that Stram is the only Coach to ever do really anything with this franchise, because Rin has said so afore, often.

"Iam sure you wont see the connection in this statement."

- you've been blind since Rin stated said in the first place... no miracle for you, John 9:1-41

It is getting very interesting at River Falls.

Heard on radio Dorsey may be a bust for KC. But only because he is in a system that he does not fit. Former Cleveland scout during Dorsey's draft, he was not on their board because he did not fit in the 3-4. So Dorsey may end up another Sims. Some teams like the Lions keep drafting WR and flop and some like KC draft DL and flop over and over again.

I think there will be one "surprise" cut, just to make a point that noone is safe. They aren't going to cut off their nose to spite their face, but there will be a sacrifice or two. Turk McBride and Tambi Hali being likely casulties. They were high draft choices that were featured players on past rosters. I think these are the type of player who may be cut early to send a message since they are kind of a long shot to transition to a new position anyway.

I am a huge fan of how Haley is coaching this team(obviously from what WE see or hear)...And it IS different than the past 10 years, however...there have been ZERO playoff wins in 10 years, so im fine with change.

These guys need a coach not a friend.

However, some of the roster may be unhappy, but the ones that have come out in favor of it, are the ones that will succeed, and they also happen to be the Bowe type talented guys.

Tyson Jackson needs to get in camp now..or else season one will be a major failure...he can still be a big time player for Kc, just not in 2009.

Just another great report on the inner workings of Camp Haley! Bob makes an excellent observation about players continuing to buy in when the winning starts which it has to do if Haley is successful. It sounds to me a similar mindset to that Greek commander from about a 1000 years ago who invaded an enemy by sea and ordered all the boats burned once his forces hit the beach. The point: Haley is sending a clear message that the only way out is through. I love that.

As to the Tyson Jackson holdout, we can only hope that Curry gets his deal done soon because there will be an established ceiling (#2 pick) and floor (#4 pick) of monetary expectation which might hasten the process. Then again, Pioli reportedly earned his job in part by selling Clark Hunt on the fact he, Pioli, wouldn't overpay for players so the lines in the sand seem clearly drawn. When will TJack sign? You tell me as my prediction of him holding out for 1 week beyond the opening of camp has been realized.

One more item. As it relates to the 'shadow posting' if one can label it as such, Bob has said recently that we'll see some changes coming on the board and that's good enough for me as this is by far the best source of Chief's info anywhere and if it means sorting around the shadows, no big deal.

To Dog you have answered your own question about the chiefs . Players did complain about Stram playing them in preseason what you failed to see that Stram is / was/ the only coach that got the Chiefs to play in 2 Super Bowls . Iam sure you wont see the connection in this statement

"I’m still a believer if we would have stuck with Marty he would’ve delivered a Super Bowl by now."

- as Marty never did (win a Superbowl or even get his team there) here in KC or anywhere else those his other 3 stops, what is the impetus for such a (wishful thinking) statement?

Marty S = he also ran

"I mean hey it took Cowher 16 years to do it."

- and Herm only got 3 years here more so 1 as the owner only last season approved the ok to 'start' a rebuild. Tom Landry had NO winning season until his 7th and Chuck Noll had a losing record every year until his 4th - think about that, both guys.

It's a crap shoot to a large extent - sometimes you're right, sometimes you're no. Rin will say Herm just as you did Marty, Edwards would have produced winners here had he been allowed to finish what the owner allowed him to start.

Scott says:
"Agreed, Jimbo. I think some of the cuts are going to surprise people."

That comment started me thinking about which players I would be surprised to see cut or traded. Here's my list:

Offense: Cassell, Johnson, Charles, Bowe, Ryan, Albert, Waters, Goff, Brown

Defense: McGee, Jackson, Dorsey, Tyler, Thomas, Vrabel, Johnson, Page, Pollard, Brown, Carr, Flowers, Leggett, Washington

ST: Colquitt

Some of these guys are on my list because they're too good to let go (Albert, Bowe), some because they're key Pioli/Haley acquisitions (Cassell, Vrabel, Thomas, the higher '09 draft picks), and at least one (Dorsey) because they're too expensive to cut and probably not tradeable at this point.

Regardless, it wouldn't be surprising to me if anyone not on that list was not on the Chiefs roster this year.

Would anyone care to submit their list or critique this one?

Real Rin ® daddy-o sez -

"Jackson is now the longest Chiefs first-round holdout since DT Ryan Sims in 2002."

- a slobbering Chiefs fandom drunk on its own rose-colored phantasm chortles - "things are going to be different now in KC!"

Uh huh - Right - 'check'

And while in 'search' of said corroboration, pass the humble pie to your nearest sycophant. Better, cue The Monkees! - "that was then & this is now."

Who would have thunk it: every day in every way, more & more Carl P as Ty be nigh on Ry... hold the mustard.

"It was a bad start to what ended up being a bad stay in Kansas City for Sims."

- what is past is prologue? We shall see...cue the violins.

MORAL OF OUR STORY:
If it was GM or coach X fault every in 2008 for everything be it player personnel & performance issues, it is GM or coach Z fault same in 2009- can't have it both ways.

- - - - -

Meanwhile, over at Stalag

"All of it has led to grumbling, and some of the more veteran players on this team wonder how much longer this team can keep up the pace that Haley has set for it over the first eight practices."

- the veterans used to grumble about Hank Stram too - he not only worked them hard in practices but also played them most every exhibition game (preseason) most every season most every bit he could get out of them.

Playing only 14 games thence regular but as many as 7 exhibition games one year, one Chief said - "Our legs would be shot by the time we were half way through the regular season."

Judiciousness must be an ingredient of any recipe  ... 'check'

- - - - -

"we can say without equivocation that the roster is not completely thrilled with Camp Haley."

- ah-haaaaaaah!!! Rin knew it!!! (Translation: what a shock.)

Fact is it's talent more so than coaching as well cohesion & time. They all go hand in hand nee are requisite.

Which is why one year into Herm's rebuild it was (cue Obuma) "acting stupidly" to replace him. But hey, money or the lack thereof by way turnstile$ talks.

Shy time and the talent that must cohere, no one wins...it even took the great Lombardi until his 3rd season to bring a Championship to GB.

 - I knew Vince Lombardi... - you're no Vince Lombardi.

- - - - -

"If it doesn’t happen, if this team struggles, the demanding nature of the head coach is not going to rally the troops."

- EGGSACTLY SO! (and when Rin sez 'EGG' he does not mean to imply a zero as in # Chiefs wins in 2009, although... just saying.)

Fandom's excuse making will start to excuse it /
 with furtive cries of "Yeah but, if only, and woulda, coulda & his other brother shoulda, abounding.

"He learned from Parcells that every player is hurt, but bones need to be broken or ligaments torn for a player to be injured. Players can get on the field if they understand that they are not injured, just hurt. Being sore is not an injury. Having a sprain is not an injury. Having a pull is not an injury."

- that is straight out of the Lombardi dictionary - Parcells as every aft just the football progeny of Vince as was he the same those afore him.

There be nothing new under the sun really as Rin & Bob G among others have said.

- - - - -

"There’s nothing unusual about the way Todd Haley is handling the players on a daily basis. He’s not plowing new ground in the coaching profession"

- this will come as a tremendous shock to the tilt at windmills sensitivities many a Chiefs fandom... didn't invent sugar nor even refine it, he just likes the rush.

“There’s nothing unusual about the way Todd Haley is handling the players on a daily basis. He’s not plowing new ground in the coaching profession”

- this will come as a tremendous shock to the tilt at windmills sensitivities many a Chiefs fandom… didn’t invent sugar nor even refine it, he just likes the rush.

When players like a coach right away before any success is achieved, that's worrisome. When players want a coach back after winning only 6 games in 2 years that's evidence of a Country Club atmosphere where the inmates are running the joint.
The players should respect their Head Coach and fear for their jobs at the beginning....not love him. They will appreciate him when they win.

greg welsh says:

" A better running games will keep the defense off the field and Cassel upright–"

True. Very true. And also, probably the biggest "if" this team is facing this year. Certainly not the only one. But in my mind, the most important one.

I am a life long Chiefs fan that lives in Dallas. I was here when Parcells came in and changed the Cows culture--- Parcells started the "no-man's" land- Campo era ther would be 20 guys over there---Parcell's less than 5-- Haley was a part of that. It produced a competitive team from the start. Does anyone argue that Pioli is a better GM than Jerry Jones? Let'em whine. When the wins come they will be all smiles. A better running games will keep the defense off the field and Cassel upright-- Goff is a great addition-- Albert and Rudy will be better.

For me-- I'm drinking the Pioli/Haley red Kool-Aid. Go Chiefs!

I always wished we kept "marty ball". Look what he did at the charges in that short period of time. He would have made it to the super bowl if they kept him, and now they have norm turner, good luck!!

I like what Haley is doing. Being a players coach didnt and most of the time doesnt work. you have to be on that fine line, where before the coaches just bent over and took it from the players!!

I agree with signings and cuts, it will get interesting

Those that don't "buy into" the Haley/Pioli "way" won't last long on this team. They'll be gone. From top to bottom, I'd say. No one is safe.

The "my way or the highway" approach. It's a complete 180 from what we've had. And since that obviously wasn't working...it makes perfect sense. I like it.

We may be seeing some "name brand players" being cut in the near future.
I also have a feeling we will be scratching our heads wondering why did he cut this player or cut that player, who we thought was talented or at least showed great potential.
Haley, clearly has a no nonsense, fearless personality & it won't be long before we are blogging like crazy about his decisions, trying to make sense of it all.
The Chiefs have hired their "alpha male" & rest assured he will surround himself with a smart, tough, & physically fit pack of wolves. (players)

There is no doubt in my mind that the right 53 will surprise us all.

I like Haley's style of coaching. Its know different from Bellichick, Coughlin, and all the other Parcells former asst. coaches. Its a style that breeds success not just in football, but in any business. A no nonsense coach or manager that believes in pushing his players to get the most out of them and not accepting nothing less than the best is going to be successful. And Haley is right its not about being guys friend thats not in his job description. His job is to maxmize these guys ability and I like what he's doing.

Trust the Chiefs will return to the powerhouse team we was in the 90's. I just hope when the success comes we don't run Haley like some fans the Marty because maybe in the first 5 seasons of his coaching career here we don't get to a Super Bowl. But somehow I think Pioli doesn't care much what the fans think he's going to do whats best for the organization and thats a good thing. I'm still a believer if we would have stuck with Marty he would've delivered a Super Bowl by now. I mean hey it took Cowher 16 years to do it. The Steelers stuck by him after all those hard aches loses in the playoff and Super Bowl. But thats what separate great organizations from good ones consistency.

As for players crying about Haley's style of training camp who cares. I know guys like Cassell and Vrabel more than likely are among the guys that understand this how its suppose to be. Seeing the were coached under Bellichick. I remember how Brady mention how Bellichick would be watching film and be belittling him and other guys on the team. So the former Pats players that are on the team are use to that type of coaching style. The rest of the team better just suck it up and perform and do their job. Also do their job consistently, and they want have to worry about being embarrassed by the head coach.

Cannot see inside to know Pioli/Haley but it is likely that Haley has read The Art of War. It can be applied to many situation HC being one. How he operates with the team is similar.

Jackson, remember what a bust Sims was when the contract became more important that the team, sign for forget it (cheap shop, easy to say and impossible to do, but I dislike the waiting).
