A Final Roster Guess-Corrected

OK, here’s my guess on the roster as it will look at 3 p.m. on Saturday, when the Chiefs must turn in their moves to reach the NFL maximum of 53 players.

(UPDATE: Thanks goodness for you eagle-eye readers who noticed I did not have Jamaal Charles down.  Obviously a major screw up on my part.  That’s been corrected and I’ve adjusted accordingly to keep within the 53-man limit.  Must have been too much water on the brain last night at Arrowhead!)

QUARTERBACK (3): Brodie Croyle, Tyler Thigpen and Damon Huard.

HALFBACK (5): Larry Johnson, Kolby Smith, Jamaal Charles, Jackie Battle and Dantrell Savage.

FULLBACK (2): Mike Cox and Chris Manderino.

TIGHT END (3): Tony Gonzalez, Brad Cottam and J.P. Foschi.

WIDE RECEIVER (5): Dwayne Bowe, Devard Darling, Will Franklin, Maurice Price and Jeff Webb.

OFFENSIVE LINE (8): Branden Albert, Brian Waters, Rudy Niswanger, Adrian Jones, Damion McIntosh, Herb Taylor, Barry Richardson and Wade Smith.

DEFENSIVE  LINE (8): Turk McBride, Tank Tyler, Glenn Dorsey, Tamba Hali, Alfonso Boone, Ron Edwards. T.J. Jackson and Brian Johnston.

LINEBACKERS (6): Derrick Johnson, Pat Thomas, Donnie Edwards, Demorrio Williams, Wes Dacus and Napoleon Harris.

CORNERBACKS (6): Pat Surtain, Brandon Flowers, Brandon Carr, Dimitri Patterson, Tyron Brackenridge and Maurice Leggett.

SAFETIES (4): Jarrad Page, Bernard Pollard, Jon McGraw and DaJuan Morgan.

SPECIAL TEAMS (3): Nick Novak, Dustin Colquitt and J.P.  Darche.

I believe the Chiefs will add at least one, maybe two or more players from the waiver wire.   If I had to rate my picks one through 53,  then I would rate veteran linebacker Napoleon Harris and G Tre Stallings as the No. 52 and 53 players.  Both may not even make the roster on Saturday.

Bob, you dont have Jammal Charles on there, he wont get cut so you will have to change your roster.

  • August 29, 2008  - Vince D says:

Why would they cut Jamaal Charles?? A third round pick this year, really??

  • August 29, 2008  - Mike O says:

No way they cut Charles, just an oversite on Bob’s part. My guess is that Manderino is on the cut list.

  • August 29, 2008  - Double D says:

I’d rather send FB Manderino to the practice squad and keep our 5 RBs. That way, in Battle, you’ve got big RB to spell LJ late in the game plus a guy that might grow into backup FB role as well.

  • August 29, 2008  - Nick says:

I think Bob may have forgotten about the fastest football player in the league….

  • August 29, 2008  - Common Sense says:

Jamal Charles will not be cut. He will be the 3rd down back. Savage is a nice story, but he’s all heart and not enough talent. Battle is one-dimensional. Manderino has no place on offense or special teams. Take your pick of those three, if not two of the three, to be gone come cut time, but count on Charles to be around.

  • August 29, 2008  - Ryan says:

    Manderino over Charles?

  • August 29, 2008  - Rich says:

Take a breath everyone. These projections are just that. Until the real, and we hope INTELLIGENT decisions are made by the Chief’s management team, I’m for standing by and waiting for the news to flash.

  • August 29, 2008  - Donovan says:

I was going to mention Jamaal Charles, but I guess a couple of other people notice before me!

Keep up the good work, Bob!

p.s. Do you have any Superbowl predicitions?

  • August 29, 2008  - Double D says:

I like your line up a lot Bob but one thing I still don’t get is why we wouldn’t want to move Manderino to the practice squad. Maybe that will come later after we scour the waiver wire for a MLB or OL? I think we could also do better than Thiglet at QB.

  • August 29, 2008  - Mark says:

Bob, do you really think we’ll keep 5 Halfbacks and 2 Fullbacks, especially since Foschi can also play H back? Seems we’re a little short on the OL keeping only 8.

  • August 29, 2008  - FATmonkey says:

LJ, Smith, Battle, Charles and Savage are good RBs but five is to many and there are to many other positions of need. How long will any of them stay unemployed? I doubt any of them, except Savage, will clear the waiver wire. I know Savage is a sentimental favorite but unless he has shown some Dante Hall like return moves he probably shouldn’t make this team. I do hope him the best I just can’t see him on the Chiefs, only because of how loaded they are at RB.

Why is Darling even making this team? Has the guy even caught anything more than a cold?

Not that any of the other WRs are all that great, but Super Sippio did at least catch a couple of TD passes in the pre-season games.

Also, I have to wonder how Connor Barth could beat out the other kickers in some magical kicking duel when Feely rolled into town, but we decide to go with a journeyman kicker a couple of teams let go in the past. Doesn’t make any sense. Barth did nothing but prove he’s just as good if not better than Novak, yet Barth is the one who ends up with the walking papers? We passed up on Mason Crosby and Nick Folk. Now we pass up on Barth. He’ll get picked up by some other team and become a perennial kicker while we wallow away at kickers nobody else wants. You would think the team would learn.

  • August 29, 2008  - Alex Korson says:

Cos, the team DID learn, by going with the Vet over the rookie going off of who kicked better, it was close and I would have prefered barth, but KC was planning to keep Barth or Novak, not having a single field goal attempt did not help, you can thank Savage(dropped screen pass) Mcmahon(dropped last pass he will ever see) that wouldve led to two field goals beyond 30.

  • August 29, 2008  - Jake says:

Bob…after Bobby sippio’s pre-season… wouldnt you think that they would cut that manderino guy and leave a spot for him? just wondering…why 2 FB’s?

  • August 29, 2008  - mike says:

Why is Darling our #2 Receiver again? Can anyone shed some light on that..

  • August 29, 2008  - Jon says:

Darling has been the least impressive. Not just because he hasn’t caught a pass but because he doesn’t seem to run very good routes and he doesn’t make much of an effort to catch tough passes like Price and Sippio. Bowe, Price, Franklin, Webb, Sippio. Those should be our recievers this year.

  • August 29, 2008  - Colby says:

Will you guys shut up about Sippio. The guy is garbage! Sure he caught those TDs against street cornerbacks but he DROPPED more passes than he CAUGHT this preseason. Seeing as how he’s too slow and unathletic to be anything more than a possession guy, you’d think catching the ball would important. Hard Knocks made him a star. Get over it. He sucks. Let’ get a receiver who’s worth something.
On that note, I’m not a fan of keeping Manderino. I think nine o line instead of eight. Hopefully a decent prospect some other team doesn’t have room for. Our backups haven’t impressed me.

  • August 30, 2008  - JimmeDK says:

I still feel like Mandarino would be a waste of rosterspace. I haven’t heard anyone rave about his special teams ability which surely must be why he makes the cut.

I look for waiver pickups at o-line, TE and LBer.

Also Bob, you should probably remove your note about Stallings beeing the 53rd guy when he isn’t on the roster.

  • August 30, 2008  - Chris says:

    Bob,

We have one guy Colby who thinks Sippio is Garbage. For one I didn’t even see Hard Knocks so I’m not sure what your reference is. Last year and this year in preseason mind you he has proven to get open catch the big play which if he is slow he has game speed. Couple of other Chiefs with this trait are Derrick Johnson and Jarrad Page if you don’t believe me pull some 40 times from the combine’s they attended. If you watch Sippio he gets YAC yards on almost all of his catches thats huge in a game. Not to Knock the other WR’s but Darling has not shown much. If the Chiefs are getting younger I think the WR core should be Bowe, Price, Franklin, Webb, Sippio as well nice line up Jon.
