Wiggin = no playoffs KC (0%) 2 1/2 yrs
Bettis = no playoffs KC (0%) 1/2 yr
Levy = no playoffs KC (0%) 5 yrs
Gansz = no playoffs KC (0%) 2 yrs
Cunningham = no playoffs in KC (0%) 2 yrs

Edwards = PLAYOFFS- only coach franchise history to do so his very first season. 3 yrs KC, 1 year in post season (33%) / W-L 0-1 (0%)

Stram = PLAYOFFS - 15 yrs DALL/KC, 5 years in the post season (33%) / W-L 5-3 (63%)
________________________________

Schottenheimer - 10 yrs, 7 in post season (70%)
W-L 3-8 (27%)

Mackovic = 4 yrs KC, 1 post season (25%) /W-L 0-1 (0%)

Vermeil = 5 yrs in KC, 1 year in post season (20%)
W-L 0-1 (0%)

Well golly, & SHAZAM! The evidence be clear that the BEST Head Coach franchise history for making
post season quickest be - HERM EDWARDS - 100%.

Most successful once there HANK STRAM - 63%.

Most dates left standing at the football altar of failure MARTY SCHOTTENMEHIMER - 27%.

The rest? Also rans an even greater lack, names they to include: Wiggin, Bettis, Levy, Mackovic, Gansz, Cunningham & Vermeil...zeros all of them.
Come 2009, shall addest the name 'check' to that sad collection of "wouldas, couldas & shouulds".

The football Cardinals and the Raiders have had some entertaining off seasons, but the Chiefs are the clubhouse leader with the 75-76 off season in my book.

I'd forgotten how wacky the spring and summer of '76 were.

Denver made a nice run at it with the recent housecleaning, but they need some more weird stuff to climb into contention with the current off season.

Carl says yes it was my fault that the chiefs failed on my tenure. I cant blame the Hunts.. With the owners out of town > I had all the power to Hire & Fire.I had the best of both worlds power with no investment. If it doesn't work out I can blame the owners for my failure. Good thing I took out all those mirrors in my office . Signed Carl P.

I still think the Herm yrs were the worst. Just like America gained its freedom from the tyranical red-coats, so too have the chiefs become free (and better off) without Herm and CP.

For chiefs fans, this truly is a happy independence day!
--------------------------------------
http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2009/7/4/937853/a-look-back-herm-years
First we had to give up a draft pick for him, what team would give up their coach if they thought he was good. In the 2006 playoff game it was the first time a team was held without a first down in the first half of a playoff game since the merger.

In the first game of the 2007 season they lost to the Texans 20-3. It was the first time since 1970 the Chiefs lost by 17 or more points on opening day, also the first time in the decade they were held to 3 points or less on opening day. The Chiefs ended the year with a 9 game losing streak that tied the franchise record but don't worry Herm got the record by losing 3 more games to start off the next season so now the record is 12 games in a row.

In one game the Chiefs only had 127 total yards that is the worst output in 22 years.Set a NFL record of 10 sacks in a season, 11 individual players had more.Team record of allowing 332 yards rushing in a game by the Tennessee Titans. Surrendered a 21 point lead to Tampa Bay for another team record. The Buffalo Bills scored 54 points on the Chiefs for another team record. And the big one had the worse season in team history.

Brilliant stuff Bob. Thanks for making the past come alive again. I am one of those fans that started with the Peterson/Schottenheimer era. I was just a toddler and living in Redskins country when the Chiefs won their Super Bowl. I know the basics of the times before Peterson/Schottenheimer but not the details like what you wrote in this article. Thank you and have a happy 4th.

Bob, what's going on at the Mothership? No new articles by you since June 1st? No new articles by Rand or "Dawes" since late May, early June. Didn't see that happenning in prior offseasons.

This anon says the chiefs are a business & has a bottom line> as Rin is well aware. Its raining here so golf is out > time for rebuttal .Lamar & Clark are being punk by some . High School is the last time football is played just for the love of the game. GMs - coaches - players want to be paid that takes money . Steelers over the years refuse to over pay players & send them packing . Lets see how many SB have the won? Lamar if anything let his GMs stay to long believing that someday they would get it right . Hank a great coach kept his players out of loyalty way past their prime. Lamar let his GMs & coaches run this team unlike The Cowboys & Washington. If our team has failed to reach the SB it wasn't because of the Hunts .Bitch all you want you are backing up the wrong tree.

Anon,

Thanks for clarifying your view. I did state in my post that the I agree regarding the bottom line. I also agree that I hope CH will spend the money necessary to field a championship team and if he doesn't then nobody can blame the fans for not turning out and spending money for a bad product. Time will tell but I do think they're headed in the right direction at this point. What's that you say Rin? Herm and Al Davis have fallen in a well and you have to go rescue them? woof! woof! woof!

Dear John, LOL
I never made that comparison. My point is that the Chiefs have been underfunding this franchise for YEARS. I'm sick of the Hunt family always getting a pass on this, by the media and most fans.

I feel as though Jr (I was the first to dub him with this, not that idiot that adopts many of my words) is taking advantage of the passion of KC'ns. It's as though he can throw any thing on the field and the people of KC will tolerate it, wait, NOT tolerate, but pay him for it, not only by continuing to buy tickets only, oh hell no! We pay him with tax dollars too! For What?! I don't even want to start talking about the lack of respect raising the price of tickets and parking exhibits.

I was going into my Freshman year in HS in the summer of 76, I do remember the turmoil of that year. (didn't know about the OD) I don't know if it's because I was younger and paying a lot more attention to girls in tight jeans or what, but it seems far worse now than then, to me. Don't get me wrong I like the moves the Chiefs have made, but if Jr is either too greedy, or too poor to fund the team properly, it's all for naught!

I hope the Chiefs win a ton of games this season, but I also hope the seats remain empty. Until Jr "Show's Me" he's here to win Championships, not just to sell tickets.

Speaking of kettles calling teapots black, i.e., coaching windbags casting roly-poly aspersions -

Rin recalls the weight loss / conditioning story regarding the Chiefs & 'check' claiming the team was 'out of shape' -

This quote from the Chicago Tribune June 20:

"Haley identified the problem and set out to fix it. In the process, he shed some serious pounds himself, going from 217 to 192."

- oh? Et tu, 'check'? Kettle, meet teapot. Maybe 'check' was hanging around with John Daly afore.

Thanks again for a great post with the "rest of the story" Bob. Anonymous, I think you're stretching comparing that year with what happened this year. It's not even close. While I agree the bottom line is always the Benjamins, the differences are many. We were in disarray then. Like them or not, even though they've never put a team on the field or coached a game yet, Clark Hunt hired THE GM everybody wanted and he hired THE coach that was being touted as the up and coming head coach prospect. Whether they do anything or not remains to be seen but to write them off already gives purpose to other motives and is naive or disingenuous at best and just plain hater or closet Raider fan at worst. Everybody's entitled to their opinion but we'll all have to wait to see what happens. Happy 4th!

"Did you know that

- yes, Rin knew...but revisiting the past always be preferable to living in a present morass that fails to satisfy same.

:-)

* Jimbo Elrod - aka 'Elbow Jimrod' as Lanier anointed him thence...

* Otis Taylor actually played not even 'a' game in '75 (injured during the very first offensive series of that season opening game v DEN as Rin recalls - 3rd play?) Otis still had some speed as he caught a 40 yd. pass exhibition season of 1976 with HOU...but then it was over.

* "They don't care how they do it as long as the pictures of the dead presidents keep rolling in," Stram said. "The whole approach is a slot-machine approach."

- you tell em Hank! Alas some things never change whether year of our Benjamin$ 1976, or same 2009. Nod toward Linda Ellerbee, "and so it goes."

* John Matuszak, football player... though he was an actor off the field (too) wasn't it in essence the 'Tooz' former KC DE/later actor Pete Koch was playing as Swede Johanson in Eastwood's '86 movie "Heartbreak Ridge"?

Only upon the big screen could someone whup him; only in death would John prove he was not larger than life itself.

Well, there's a good reason I don't remember the 1976 season. I was in the US Navy, serving on board the USS Pollack (SSN-603), and spent most of the year underway and underwater. Didn't get a lot of news about the Chiefs during those days, but tried to follow them as close as I could. Since I was in San Diego, almost all I heard about was the Chargers.

Hank said it then... "saying that the only thing the Chiefs management cared about was filling up Arrowhead. "They don't care how they do it as long as the pictures of the dead presidents keep rolling in," Stram said. "The whole approach is a slot-machine approach."... And it's still true today!

Got you single game tickets, yet?

One of the best self-proclaimed personal slogans ever came from Matuszak himself when asked about his exploits off the field. He said:

"You can get bruised when you cruise with the Tuze"

You cannot make this stuff up! Excellent montage of stories, Bob.
