“There is no system of play that substitutes for knocking an opponent down.”

Wednesday Morning Cup O’Chiefs

The PUP list was a busy place the last few days as NFL teams got their rosters down to the league limit of 75 players for now.

The Physically Unable to Perform list is a refuge for players who because of injuries suffered on the NFL field in the last year and can’t yet pass a team physical so they can practice.  It’s a variation of the injured reserve list with one key difference: a player on IR cannot under any conditions play for the team that season.  A player on PUP has a window where he can practice and possibly be activated to the 53-man roster.  This window comes after the sixth week of the season and ends before the 10th game.

Some of the familiar names on the PUP list this week were:

  • Super Bowl hero WR David Tyree  of the New York Giants.
  • New England guard Stephen Neal.
  • RB Cadillac Williams of Tampa Bay.
  • Joe Jurevicius, wide receiver in Cleveland.
  • Houston CB Dunta Robinson.

The Chiefs made the move to PUP with draft choice Kevin Robinson, who is trying to rehab from knee surgery done in June.

COUNTDOWN

It’s 3 days from the NFL roster cutdown to the regular-season limit of 53 players.

We are now 11 days away from their regular-season opener against the Patriots in Foxboro and they are 18 days away from their home opener against the Raiders.

FROM THE PAGES OF CHIEFS HISTORY

On August 27, 1966 the Chiefs beat Houston 31-20 in a pre-season game at Municipal Stadium.  WR Otis Taylor had five catches for 140 yards and two touchdowns, including an 80-yard TD in the fourth quarter. Touchdown runs of 2 yards by RB Curtis McClinton and 1-yard by RB Bert Coan. S Bobby Hunt had three interceptions all off QB George Blanda.

On August 27, 1972 the Chiefs beat the Los Angeles Rams 19-13 in a pre-season game at Arrowhead Stadium in front of 77,764 fans. K Jan Stenerud had FGs of 37, 40, 57 and 36 yards.  That 57-yarder was the second longest in NFL history at that time.  RB Wendell Hayes had a 1-yard TD run. The Chiefs had just 201 yards in total offense. DE Aaron Brown had three sacks.

On August 27, 1977 the Chiefs beat the Los Angeles Rams 27-19 in a pre-season game at Arrowhead Stadium.  There were touchdown runs of 9 yards by RB Larry Williams, 1-yard by RB Tony Reed and 3 yards by RB McNeil.  K Jan Stenerud had FGs of 24 and 39 yards.  The Chiefs had three interceptions by LB Thomas Howard, CB Tim Gray and S Gary Barbaro. Rams RB John Cappelletti ran 14 times for 70 yards and QB Joe Namath was 3 of 7 passing for 52 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT.

AROUND THE LEAGUE

Michael Strahan is staying retired and not returning to the Giants.

In Indianapolis, Peyton Manning finally got on the practice field with his teammates on Tuesday as he began his process of getting ready for the opener.

The New York  Jets announced their plan for PSLs for their new stadium in the Meadowlands that they share with the Giants.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell met Tuesday with all five Rooney brothers to discuss the situation involving ownership of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

AROUND THE AFC WEST

His name is Jyles Tucker and supposedly he’s the guy that’s going to fill the role of Shawne Merriman if the later can’t go this season because of his knee injury.

In Denver, the Broncos supposedly have all their starting spots filled and ready to go for their regular season opener against Oakland.

If we are to believe Raiders coach Lane Kiffin, Oakland will do nothing but run the football when they face the Broncos for that opener.
