Tuesday Morning Cup O’Chiefs

The world of kickers in the NFL is really a wacky world, like one of those hillbilly families where some guy’s cousin is also his brother, and his aunt is his grandmother.

Take this scenario.  The Chiefs signed Jay Feely on Monday.  Whether he’s the team’s kicker this season remains to be seen, but his chances of holding down the position are good.  Feely was kicking with the New  York  Giants in 2006, but was replaced there by Lawrence Tynes, who used to kick for the Chiefs.

Feely went to Miami, where he replaced Olinda Mare last year.  Mare went to New Orleans, where he replaced John Carney.  Carney went on to kick at Jacksonville and then ended the season last year with the Chiefs.

The door just spins and spins and the same names keep coming out the door.

COUNTDOWN

It’s 4 days from the NFL roster cutdown to the regular-season limit of 53 players.

We are now 12 days away from their regular-season opener against the Patriots in Foxboro and they are 19 days away from their home opener against the Raiders.

FROM THE PAGES OF CHIEFS HISTORY

On August 26, 1973 the Chiefs dropped a pre-season game to the Green Bay Packers 21-16 at Arrowhead Stadium.  Jan Stenerud kicked field goals from 10, 47 and 24 yards.  RB MacArthur Lane had a 20-yard TD run.  RB Leroy Keyes had three carries for 11 yards for the Chiefs.

AROUND THE LEAGUE

Now that the Chiefs have signed Michael Merritt, the only ‘08 draft choices that remained unsigned are Caleb Campbell, Detroit’s 7th-round choice who can’t get out of the Army and 1st-round pick Derrick Harvey of the Jaguars.

Jax head coach is blaming Harvey’s agent, former Chiefs defensive lineman Ken “Fuzzy” Kramer for the standoff.  He said last week:

“Obviously, it has gone on quite a while and there’s a great deal of money that’s gone by right now,” Del Rio said. “Quite frankly, I think its more about the agent than the player. When you look at the numbers, it doesn’t make sense for anyone expect the agent building a client base for next year.”

Here’s the story from the radio station website.

NFL head coaches are going to be looking very snazzy in coming years, especially off the field.  Well, that’s 31 of 32 coaches.  Guess who isn’t among them?

AROUND THE AFC WEST

The notes, quotes and cuts from the Broncos, including former Chiefs WR Samie Parker being given his release.

The folks in the Bay Area are always debating and talking about the future of Lane Kiffin as the Raiders head coach, like this guy.

LB Shawne Merriman needs surgery on his torn knee ligaments.  Everyone agrees on that, with the exception of one person: Merriman himself.

I really would be ECSTATIC if Bill Belicheck died. I hate him more than any other person. He is the most despicable person in the world. He IS actually worse than those spoiled brats on that stupid Sweet 16 show on MTV. Really.

Wow, death would be a harsh outcome. I’m not so sure he’s the worst person in the world - I think that’s Mike Shanahan or Al Davis - or Osama Bin Laden - or Kim Jong Il… one of those guys.

    To Eli:

Osama, Kim Jong Il, and Bill Belichick…. I don’t know. They’re all pretty up there on my list. And Al Davis is the KC Chiefs best friend in the world!! He’s the reason that the Faiders suck so badly! You gotta love him!!
