Training Camp Practice Report – 8/4

That’s No. 77 NT Kelly Gregg getting his first taste of the Kansas City media horde after practice on Thursday.

From St. Joseph, Missouri

Sorry this is going up so late, but it’s been quite a day. When you’re a one-man band, the music slows down at times, but it never stops.

And, then Scott Pioli and his minions go crazy and get about a dozen contracts done in 24 hours.

Let’s get to the news.

Restricted free agent CB Brandon Carr signed his tender offer and was on the practice field Thursday afternoon. Also signed on Thursday was veteran NFL S Sabby Piscitelli, a 5-year veteran who previously played with Tampa Bay and Cleveland. Plus, the team’s last remaining draft choice agreed to terms, as OLB Justin Houston agreed to a 4-year deal for $2.786 million, with a $671,248 signing bonus.

And, let’s address the three key players that had physical problems during Thursday afternoon’s practice.

DE Glenn Dorsey left the field on a cart, after it looked like he injured his left knee in a defensive line-offensive line drill. Essentially what happens is three offensive linemen come off the ball and try to move the defensive lineman out of his spot. The defensive guy has to read the blockers and react to them, or hold his ground if they are coming right off the ball. Dorsey and rookie OT avid Mims tangled. Dorsey was off balance and Mims wheeled him to the ground and it appeared Dorsey’s left foot stayed in the turf as his body was twisted. He walked away from the drill to the medical tent, stripping of his knee brace as he walked. Hopefully for Dorsey that brace saved him from a very serious injury.

First-round draft choice WR Jonathan Baldwin was in the rehab area during the afternoon practice with some sort of upper right leg injury. The leg was wrapped from his thigh to his knee. He rode the stationary bike but actually he was pedaling with his arms, not his legs. There was a hitch to his get along as he walked off the field.

And, then there was FB Le’Ron McClain, on the field for his first practice as a member of the Chiefs. About a half-hour into practice, McClain returned his lunch and appeared to be dazed as he was walked to the medical tent. About 20 minutes later, he walked back onto the field and got back into the drills with no apparent problem.

After practice McClain said it was the excitement of the moment starting with a new team (he really said that!), a bit of the heat and humidity and too much lunch that caused his problem.

Facts, observations and numbers from Thursday:

– The Chiefs now have 85 players on their roster, after practicing with 59 players most of the week they had as many as 81 bodies available at times on Thursday. TE Tony Moeaki (right knee) remains on the PUP list. Practicing for the first time on Thursday were the following 19 players by unit:

OFFENSE – RB Jackie Battle, WR Steve Breaston, WR Terrance Copper, FB Mike Cox, WR Zeke Markshusen, FB Le’Ron McClain, OT Ryan O’Callaghan, TE Leonard Pope, OT Barry Richardson and C Casey Wiegmann.

DEFENSE – CB Brandon Carr, CB Travis Daniels, DE Wallace Gilberry, NT Kelly Gregg, OLB Tamba Hali, S Reshard Langford, FS Jon McGraw, S Sabby Piscitelli and ILB Brandon Siler.

– While most off the linebacker were working in pass coverage drill, Michal Johnson, Gabe Miller and Amara Kamara were rushing the passer.

– The passing game was a bit off in the early going as QBs Matt Cassel and Tyler Palko had their problems connecting with receiver. Cassel finally broke free when he hooked up with WR Chandler Williams on a long completion down the sideline.

– In the teamwork segment near the end of practice, S Donald Washington picked off a pass from Palko that was thrown late.

– Wiegmann at center and Richardson at RT moved right back into the No. 1 offensive line.

– Here’s how the O-Linemen lined up for drills:

  • Starters – LT Branden Albert, LG Ryan Lilja, C Wiegmann, RG Jon Asamoah, RT Richardson.
  • Backups – LT Butch Lewis, LG Darryl Harris, C Rodney Hudson, RG Bobby Greenwood, RT Mike Ingeroll.
  • Third team – LT David Mims, LG Lucas Patterson, RG Chris Harr, RT Ryan O’Callaghan.

– As it went on the field Thursday morning, here was the starting defense: Tyson Jackson and Glenn Dorsey at DEs, Anthony Toribio at NT, Andy Studebaker and Pierre Walters at OLB, Jovan Belcher and Derrick Johnson at ILB, Brandon Flowers and Javier Arenas on the corners with Eric Berry and Kendrick Lewis at safety. By Thursday afternoon Gregg replaced Toribio, Hali replaced Walters and Carr was in for Arenas.

– When the Chiefs went to nickel in the morning, they brought LBs Cameron Sheffield and Demorrio Williams on the field with Donald Washington and rookie Jalil Brown. Going off were Toribio, Belcher, Studebaker and Walters.

– The No. 2 defense in the morning was: Brandon Bair and Dion Gales at DE, Jerrell Powe on the nose, Sheffield and Eric Bakhtiari at OLB with Williams and Justin Cole inside. Brown and Quinten Lawrence are the CBs, with Washington and Ricky Price on the back line.

– Here’s the No. 1 FG/PAT team with Ryan Succop kicking, Dustin Colquitt holding and Thomas Gafford snapping. The blockers from left to right are: Jake O’Connell, Jon Asamoah, Butch Lewis, Darryl Harris, Rodney Hudson, Branden Albert, Ryan Lilja and Andy Studebaker.

– During a special teams segment, NT Jerrell Powe was off to the side getting extra instruction from defensive line coach Anthony Pleasant.

Good to see everyone in camp now. Now its time for this team to begin preparation to repeat as division champs and get a couple playoff wins.

David Mims, the rap on him coming out of Virginia Union was competition. I guess with him taking out Dorsey that song has been answered.

Bob – thanks for the reports. You’re the best one-man band in town. Does this mean Rudy Niswanger is through with the Chiefs? That would be 3 for 3 on NFLPA executive committee members (Waters, Vrabel) and player reps (Niswanger).
