Thiggy Joins Flipper

On Tuesday the Chiefs traded QB Tyler Thigpen to the Miami Dolphins for an undisclosed draft choice.

That was good news for Thigpen who was trapped in a no-win situation with the Chiefs. GM Scott Pioli and head coach Todd Haley did not view him as potential quarterback for them. There’s a good chance Thigpen would have gone to Jacksonville in a trade before the season’s first game, but the knee injury to starter Matt Cassel put that on hold.

In Miami, the Dolphins have lost starter Chad Pennington for the season with a right shoulder injury. Chad Henne will become the starter. The other quarterback on the roster is rookie Pat White out of West Virginia.

Because of his ability to run and throw the ball, Thigpen will likely get a chance to get on the field with the Dolphins once he learns the offense. This year with the Chiefs, he appeared for two plays against Baltimore, running once for two yards and handing off on the second play.

Last year, Thigpen stabilized a very shaky quarterback situation with the Chiefs when he became the starter after both Brodie Croyle and Damon Huard were injured. Running out of the spread offense, he ended up throwing for 18 TD passes, against 12 interceptions. He also led all NFL quarterbacks in rushing with 386 yards.

It’s the third deal in the KC-Miami family pipeline between Pioli and his father-in-law and former boss Bill Parcells. The Chiefs dealt their 2010 seventh-round pick to the Dolphins on the second day of the ’09 NFL Draft so they could select TE Jake O’Connell. They then deal an undisclosed pick in late August for offensive linemen Andy Alleman and Ikechuku Ndukwe.

More than likely, the compensation for Thigpen is a return of one of those draft choices.

The Dolphins saw Thigpen up close in the next to last game of the ’08 season at Arrowhead Stadium. He ran for 57 yards and a touchdown and threw for 320 yards against Miami.

    Dear Clark

So, how’s things? That’s great. Columbus, Ohio is lovely this time of the year. Kansas City? Well- no, ‘Kansas City’ Jr., you know, “and the HOME OF THE CHIEFS & s**t” a football team. No ‘football’ not $occer. Anyway, thanks for asking…we’re all fine here in 0-7 Heaven.

Say, what Rin was wondering as he was wandering through perdition here just off I-70 and Stadium Drive – are you happy? With the Chiefs I mean… the product ‘on the field’ not the ‘improvements to said’ as it were.

If (as Rin suspects) you are in fact not, do the right thing – punt – punt this football team, do it yourself, or, have Dustin help you as needed. And boot Sacco  and Vanzetti  too.

It was a nice 50 year run, but, all good things must come to an end…it did here in KC some 40 years ago. The time to strike nee act is right now while the iron is hot…don’t wait for 0-20 because if you do that – as Bum Phillips stated “I’m tellin ya if you don’t do that then you’re gonna have more problems than not.”

The late NFL Owner Carroll Rosenbloom – he never played soccer – got himself all over-wrought and depressed by his pent up disappointment his team and so SOLD IT – more so traded it – for another team.

You can too…do it Jr., because a football team is a terrible thing to waste.

    Thanks

    X’s & O’s to you

    Your pal

    Rin Tin Tin

PS: Best of luck to you too Tyler “The Little Big Man From Coastal Carolina” Thigpen – KC just lost it’s second best QB behind only Brodie Croyle and miles ahead of mutt ca$$el & gutteredge…

    daddy-o

I would say that Thigpen will have a decent shot at starting for Miami, in the weeks to come.

He just didn’t fit in here with what Haley is trying to do. His lackluster play in pre-season and practices didn’t help his cause, either.

Good luck to him. He’s a good guy, and I really hope he goes down there and kicks some ass. He should be a good fit for the type of Offense Miami runs.

Good for Tyler and good for the Chiefs. He needed to be somewhere else where h’ll at least have the opportunity to start, and the wildcat crazy Dolphs seem like a good fit. I guess he still had some value after all, LOL. It was smart of the Chiefs to not just cut him when the impatient horde wanted then to, but instead wait for the inevitable QB injuries, and then move him. Thanks for rescuing the 2008 season, Tyler, and making things exciting, once Herm had no choice but to go with you and abandon his usual offense.

Mixed feelings…happy for Thiggy though. Wish him all the luck with the Dolphins.

im surprised we got a draft pick for him because how bad he looked this preseason. but he did do OK last year. with our franchise qb in place, we got a draft pick for thiggy and he goes to a team where he can contribute. both good situations for each

Mad Chief, u really believe Thiggy had a shot? Stop it…not with a great QB like Cassel…the golden boy…the patriot protege…..the HOF understudy…(63 million dolla man) yeah right. GL Thiggy since u were unappreciated here maybe some 1 else can turn the trash u offered into treasure. Go Haley and Pioli in 2009 and Beyond!!!!!

“Go Haley and Pioli in 2009 and Beyond!!!!!”

    - yeah & keep goin’! Go West, go East, go North go South- sorry, didn’t mean to reference where you’d taken Rin’s Chiefs… just GO AWAY FOOLS!

    &

    Alexthe”GREAT”,

Maybe you should re-read what I said. I think it was pretty self-explanatory.

You guys can bash Haley, Pioli, and Cassel all you want. Knock yourselves out. Doesn’t mean a thing to me. I’ll wait and see what happens during the year before I make my judgements. Three games is too soon to tell for an old country boy like me. I believe in giving a man a fair chance, personally.

  • September 29, 2009  - ED says:

Good to see Tyler getting a shot somewhere else. As for fans and media taking shots at the new regime all of you will look like idiots for rushing to judgment in year one and I personally will remind u of it every day once the winning gets to rolling back in Kc.

Well, it will be good to see Thigpen leading the Dolphins to a couple of wins this year.. im glad the Dolphins dont play us this year, because I wouldn’t want to see Thigpen running and throwing all over his former team. Since everyone is doing it this year…

you want to get rid of the chiefs? WTF is wrong with you? Why are you on a chiefs site everyday? Doublethink much?

CONGRATULATIONS TO HERM EDWARDS for signing Thigpen for the Chiefs in 2008 off WAIVERS no less… GREAT MOVE HERM! KUDOS! We got a talented QB that only an  & could make regress; Chan Gailey is too no doubt happy that Tyler as Chan are long gone the field this KC mess AND we get a draft pick too!

    &

  • September 29, 2009  - Alexthe"GREAT" says:

At the end of the day we all are Chief fans and all seem 2 think more could have been done this year so we could atleast compete! So why are u still making excuses for Haley/Pioli who are clearly “over qualified” for this job. They rather have great players surrouding them and then they can show us all what they are really capable of. Until then, if our o-line wont block then Pioli will send the orders down 2 Haley 2 just quit.(he he)

gosh yeah that makes up for herm blowing…90 percent of his picks

Can they fatten him up and put him at RT?

  • September 29, 2009  - el cid says:

My goodness, another TE. Just how stupid do the Chiefs think we are? Unless some of the WRs or TE can play on the OL to block, this is so much crap.

  • September 29, 2009  - gorillafan says:

WE HAVE TO MORE SPOTS OPEN, HOW STUPID DO YOU THINK THEY ARE?

  • September 29, 2009  - Rin Tin Tin says:

LB Beisel & TE Crabtree – 2 more FAILED  and  signees – bite the dust… that makes 21 of the dud-ly duo’s players that have bee swept out & picked up by “NO OTHER NFL TEAMS”.

    &

  • September 29, 2009  - kr24 says:

Best to you Thiggy. It was fun. Just don’t laugh too loud if both Cassel and Croyle go down with injuries due to an inability to coach an offensive line. Maybe Haley should bring Chan back as Off. coordinator.

  • September 29, 2009  - Michael says:

Uh, tight ends do block, and Pope is pretty good at that. Chiefs need all the blocking help they can get.

Thigen should do well with the fins; he fits with their style much better.

Yes, I think the new regime should/could’ve done more in free agency this year. But, they did get a late start putting together the coaching staff, and I think they wanted to see exactly what they had left over from the Herm era. Perhaps, they underestimated the job of turning around the culture and stabilizing the team. Having said that, I believe these are the right guys running the show, and that they will be successful. It will take some time, and I’m cool with that.

So far, it’s been a bit ugly and hard to watch. No doubt the entire organization has a lot of work to do. They’ve got a murderous start to their schedule that most teams in the league would have trouble with. The trick is going to be keeping their heads up and improving until they get to the more advantageous second half of their schedule. I just want progress, some sustained positives. Don’t make me pull my hair out so much.

    But,it just the beginning.

  • September 29, 2009  - Mad Chief says:

Okay, for those calling for Pioli and Haley’s heads already.

Who would YOU have hired as GM? Or would you have kept Carl for the last year of his contract?

Who would YOU have hired as Head Coach? Would you have kept Edwards? That seemed to be going really well, huh?

What FA signings would YOU have made? So, the Chiefs have released a number of guys they signed this off-season. Who was available that they SHOULD have signed. That would have been willing to come here, of course.

You’re quick to criticize, but what would YOU have done? What’s the plan for turning dog sh*t into gold IMMEDIATELY? I’m all ears.

  • September 29, 2009  - Bakjon says:

Granted Thigpen brought some excitement but remember a QB fairly or unfairly is judged by their record and Thiggy’s was 1-10. He was hot in the first half of games last year when the Chiefs went to a spread but once halftime came around and teams were able to make their adjustments then Thigpen faltered. The same will happen in the wildcat.

Cassell will be OK before the end of the year everybody just needs to calm down. It’s going to take a moment because the Chiefs didn’t have a whole of talent before he got here. Don’t pay attention to the pseudo followers who are taking about 0-20 or that the Chiefs should move. Wins will quiet them and send them back to their caves.
