Sunday Morning Cup O’Chiefs
Let’s keep this between me and you, OK?
There are two games left in the NFL pre-season for the Chiefs. There are 27 players that must be sliced off the Chiefs roster.
One of those will not be rookie RB Dantrell Savage.
Nobody around Arrowhead Stadium would come out and say something as bold after his performance Saturday night against Arizona, but I will. Savage made the team with his performance against the Cardinals.
Savage showed at Oklahoma State that he could run the ball. Yes, he’s 5-foot-8, but he ran for over 100 yards every weekend in the Big 12 Conference. The question was whether he could do the other things that a backup, backup back can do, like special teams.
There’s no more doubts. Savage ripped off a 45-yard kickoff return against Arizona. The Chiefs didn’t have a kick return last year that long. With one week of practice catching punts, he went back and easily handled two kicks and picked up an average of 10 yards a return.  The Chiefs as a team last year averaged 7.6 yards a punt return.
It’s going to be impossible to keep the little man from Georgia off the team.
THEY PLAYED IN THE AFC WEST LASTÂ NIGHT
Over in St. Louis, the Rams were able to get a late touchdown to beat the Chargers 7-6.
In Denver, the Broncos were able to handle the Dallas Cowboys, winning 23-13.
COUNTDOWN
It’s 9 days from the NFL’s first mandatory cutdown of the roster. Teams must go from 80 to 75 on August 26. It’s 13 days from the NFL roster cutdown to the regular-season limit of 53 players.
It’s 21 days away from their regular-season opener against the Patriots in Foxboro and they are 28 days away from their home opener against the Raiders.
CHIEFS HISTORY
On August 17, 1963 the Chiefs beat the Oakland Raiders 35-21 in a pre-season game played in Seattle. The game’s first score came when Oakland QB Cotton Davidson hit RB Clem Daniels for an 82-yard TD pass. Eddie Wilson started at quarterback for the Chiefs and completed 23 of 32 passes for 256 yards, 3 TDs and 2 INTs. WR Chris Burford had nine catches for 75 yards and 2 TDs.
AROUND THE LEAGUE
A lengthy story about the destruction Michael Vick’s financial empire turned up this weekend on ESPN.com and right in the middle of it all appears to be current Chiefs LB Demorrio Williams.
AROUND THE AFC WEST
RB-FB Jacob Hester is getting a lot of attention out in San Diego for his toughness.
Apparently, the Broncos are going to breakout their hideous orange uniforms this season. They’ll wear them in a game in December against the Chiefs.
Some leftover analysis from the Raiders Friday night defeat in Nashville.

Savage is one of those guys if you just watch him/the tape, you know he’s special. Like Priest Holmes with Baltimore. Watching Holmes as a Ravens made it clear he was special. The Chiefs need playmakers. This guy is a playmaker.
As always, thanks for the updates.
Just looking at the return statistics, Savage’s weren’t all that much different than Sam’s. Might it be that the Cardinals’ special teams are gawdawful?
There is no way that Savage would make waivers, he deserves to be on the team. What are the Chiefs going to do with Battle who some say are there 2nd string RB, he would have to get cut. What about Robinson when will he get on the field and what happens if he doesnt beat out Savage would he make waivers?
They’ll have to keep 5 RBs and Cox at FB.
LJ, Charles, Smith, Battle, and Savage. It sounds like a lot but if they keep nine olinemen instead of ten or maybe eight dlinemen instead of nine they can do it. Battle has looked good on the coverage units so he’ll earn his keep on the roster as well.
