Still No Contract For No. 1 Pick Eric Fisher

From St. Joseph, Missouri

All the rookies on the Chiefs roster were accounted for at Missouri Western State University late Monday afternoon with one exception – the Chiefs and the NFL’s No. 1 draft choice, OT Eric Fisher.

Head coach Andy Reid said Fisher was absent and that general manager John Dorsey and salary cap guru Trip McCracken were continuing to talk with Fisher’s agent Joel Segal in hopes of finalizing a deal. Under the NFL’s new draft choice slotting system, Fisher’s deal should be $22 million and change.

“They are progressing with some things and we’ll have to wait to see how it works out,” Reid said. “There is communication. I’ve been through enough of these over a number of years and if they are talking, I know it can get done.”

There is no immediate deadline for Fisher to report. Reid allowed that he wanted his right tackle in camp on Monday, but no matter if he signs this week or next week, he’s unlikely to lose his spot in the starting lineup.

“I understand how these things go,” Reid said. “So I don’t worry about them. I’m concentrating on the guys that are here.”
