Pre-Season Roster Update – 8/25

The Chiefs reached into the “whatever happened to” bag of veteran players and pulled out TE Anthony Becht, who they signed on Wednesday to a one-year contract.

They also announced that ILB Brandon Siler was placed on the injured-reserve list, ending his season due to the torn Achilles tendon he suffered in practice on Monday.

The 34-year old Becht did not play in the NFL during the 2010 regular season, after he was released by the Arizona Cardinals on September 3, 2010. That makes him the third veteran free agent signed by the Chiefs in the last three weeks that did not play in the NFL during the 2010 season. The others were OT Jared Gaither and WR Keary Colbert.

Becht was beginning his post-football career in broadcasting, and working out of Tampa, Florida, before he was signed by the Chiefs. A journeyman over his 10-year NFL career, he has played in 158 games with four different teams: Jets, Buccaneers, Rams and Cardinals. A product of the University of West Virginia has caught 185 passes for 1,511 yards with 21 TD catches in his NFL career.

Becht has caught 3 passes for 24 yards and a touchdown against the Chiefs. That score came in October 2002. The last time Becht made a catch in the NFL was November 22, 2009 against St. Louis.

Why would the Chiefs be interested in Becht at this point of the preseason? There are several possibilities. At 6-6, 270 pounds, Becht becomes the biggest TE on the roster. There may be concerns about the future of Leonard Pope, who was their blocking TE last year.

Another reason may be the right ankle injury suffered by Jake O’Connell. That injury was suffered this week in practice and O’Connell has not returned to the practice field. He was the No. 3 TE last year, used primarily for blocking.

As official an announcement as the Chiefs will ever make on a pre-season injury, ILB Brandon Siler was placed on the injured-reserve list on Thursday after suffering a torn Achilles tendon in practice on Monday.

Because the Chiefs do not have a formal practice on Thursday, there won’t be another chance to see how RB Jamaal Charles is doing. He suffered a left leg injury of some sort during Wednesday night’s practice at Arrowhead Stadium. Charles sat out the last half of the practice.

I played TE in highschool, of course I haven’t played since ’77. What are they doing?

I doubt Pope’s spot on the roster is in any danger, but O’Connell is probably finished in KC.
