Pre-Game – Packers vs. Chiefs

From Arrowhead Stadium

11:31 a.m. CDT – That’s it from pre-game. Enjoy the game and remember that late Sunday afternoon and then Sunday night we will have complete coverage of the Packers and Chiefs.

11:30 a.m. CDT – The head coaches are having a rather lengthy conversation at the 40-yard line, as Green Bay’s Mike McCarthy chatters back and forth with Romeo Crennel.

11:25 a.m. CDT – A couple of Pittsburgh guys talking it over at the 45-yard line – Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy and today’s referee Gene Steratore. Both grew up in the Steel City.

11:20 a.m. CDT – Chiefs special teams coach Steve Hoffman and Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers having a long conversation at mid-field.

11:15 a.m. CDT – The Packers are 7-0 on the road this season and today is their final road game of the regular season. They are looking to become just the sixth team in league history to go unbeaten on the road in one season.

11:10 a.m. CDT – Among the early arriving fans, it’s very definitely a Packers crowd today. Every time somebody wearing the green and gold comes through the tunnel and onto the field, there is a roar from the Cheese Heads. Chiefs players come out of the 50-yard line tunnel behind their bench to hardly any notice.

11:05 a.m. CDT -K Ryan Succop was one of two on FG attempts from 51 yards, kicking towards the west goal posts. Coming right after him, Packers K Mason Crosby drilled one from 53 yards and was one of two from 58 yards. The one he made hit the crossbar and bounced through.

11 a.m. CDT – National Weather Service forecast for this afternoon is mostly sunny, with a high near 58. South-southwest wind between 11 and 13 mph. No rain anywhere in the forecast.

10:55 a.m. CDT – Fun fact for today’s game: the Packers have had 19 players score touchdowns this season. In comparison, the Chiefs have had just 13 TD scorers. The single season record is 21 players, held by several teams and last done by the 2007 New England Patriots.

10:50 a.m. CDT – For the Packers, Riley County’s Jordy Nelson will start in place of WR Greg Jennings. At MLB it’s rookie D.J. Smith stepping in for Desmond Bishop and at LDE Howard Green will fill in for Ryan Pickett.

10:45 a.m. CDT – Interesting decision by the Chiefs in having only two quarterbacks active for today’s game – Kyle Orton and rookie Ricky Stanzi. Not only is Tyler Palko inactive, but so is WR Jerheme Urban, who has been the team’s emergency fourth QB for the last two months. If Orton and Stanzi go down, heaven knows where Romeo Crennel will turn for help at the game’s most important position.

10:38 p.m. CDT – Inactive players for the Chiefs today are QB Tyler Palko, SS Jon McGraw, OT David Mims, WR Jerheme Urban, TE Jake O’Connell, DE Brandon Bain, DT Jerrell Powe.

10:35 p.m. CDT – Inactive players for the Packers today are QB Graham Harrell, RB Brandon Saine, RB James Starks, LB Desmond Bishop, T Chad Clifton, DE Ryan Pickett, WR Greg Jennings.

10:30 a.m. CDT – RB Dexter McCluster doing some extra work with RB coach Maurice Carthon on running routes out of the deep set in the offense. He’s also running some delayed, shallow crossing routes; obviously the Chiefs hope to get him isolated on a Green Bay linebacker.

10:25 a.m. CDT – TE Leonard Pope is on the field catching some extra passes. Not sure why, given that he’s only five yards away from TE coach Bernie Parmlee. On the season, Pope has 20 catches.

10:20 a.m. CDT – A couple of former college and Chiefs pre-season teammates are enjoying a chat at the 15-yard line – tight ends Jake O’Connell and Tom Crabtree. Both played at Miami of Ohio. Both came out for the 2009 NFL Draft. O’Connell was selected by the Chiefs in the seventh round of the’09 Draft, while Crabtree signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent. He’s was released early in the 2009 season and hooked on with the Packers where he’s become a cult hero in Wisconsin because of his Twitter page.

10:15 a.m. CDT – still about 20 minutes away from learning inactives, but the Packers already have declared four players out of today’s game: WR Greg Jennings, OT Chad Clifton, DE Ryan Pickett and MLB Desmond Bishop.

10:10 a.m. CDT – Packers put RB James Starks through a short workout, but it does not appear that he’ll be playing today. That will leave the Green Bay running game in the hands of Ryan Grant and fullback John Kuhn.

10:05 a.m. CDT – The Chiefs quarterbacks and receivers are out for their pre-pre-game throwing session, but only Kyle Orton and Ricky Stanzi appear to be throwing. Tyler Palko is on the field, but he’s not throwing any of the routes to the receivers; he’s basically playing catch with WR Terrance Copper.

10 a.m. CDT – Good morning from the stadium, where it’s overcast and a cold morning waiting for the Chiefs and Packers. If the early tailgate scene is any indication it’s going to be a green and gold game, and we aren’t talking about the Arrowhead grass. A lot of Packers fans getting an early start to the game and almost all of those fans walking around the stadium apron were adored in Packers trinkets.
