Pre-Game – Chiefs vs. Titans

From Arrowhead Stadium

No surprises with either team’s inactive players for today’s game. Details below.

10:00 a.m. CDT – Good morning from Arrowhead Stadium where game-day has dawned cloudy and cold, very cold. Temperature right now is 17 degrees and there’s a good breeze blowing from the west. There are also a few flurries blowing through the air but nothing major.

10:01 a.m. – The Chiefs made a roster move overnight, bringing WR Quinten Lawrence off the practice squad and releasing CB Mike Richardson. Lawrence has been a very disappointing sixth-round choice from the disastrous 2009 NFL Draft. He’s spent the entire season on the practice squad. There’s no obvious reason for his promotion, so it will be interesting to watch the personnel matters in this game – there’s no reason to bring him up if he’s not going to be active today.

10:02 a.m. – Quarterbacks and receivers are out early for their normal pre-game throwing session, although they are all bundled up against the cold. WR Dexter McCluster is easy to pick out, as he dreadlocks are flowing out of the back of the wool cap that he’s pulled down over his ears.

10:05 a.m. – The only receiver on the field who isn’t bundled up is TE Tony Moeaki, who simply has a long sleeve shirt on. No sweat shirt, no hat. I guess this must feel like a nice fall day for a kid from the Chicago area and the University of Iowa.

10:10 a.m. – Titans coach Jeff Fisher is out on the field, saying hello to QB Matt Cassel and still dressed in his street clothes. Not many head coaches on the field this early in pre-game.

10:12 a.m. – There are a lot of Titans already on the field woring up a sweat. Opposite of the Chiefs pitchers and catchers is a group of Titans defensive backs, who are going through an early drill with an assistant coach on backpedaling and coverage.

10:15 a.m. – Sun has broken through the cloud layer and brightened up the pre-game, although it hasn’t warmed it up. It hasn’t slowed down the Chiefs QBs and receivers as they’ve had full attendance at their session, including OLB Mike Vrabel.

10:24 a.m. – Tight ends are spending a little extra time on the field working on pass protection. More than likely they’ll end up wherever Titans DE Jason Babin is located.

10:32 a.m. – Chiefs inactive players today are: DB Donald Washington,FB Mike Cox, S Reshard Langford, LB Charlie Anderson, C Rudy  Niswanger, DT Anthony Toribio and WR Quinten Lawrence.  Tyler Palko is the inactive third QB.

10:33 a.m. – Titans inactive players today are S Vincent Fuller, S Robert Johnson, LB David Thornton, OL Troy Kropog, DE Hal Davis, DT Jovan Haye and WR Lavelle Hawkins. Rusty Smith is the inactive third QB.

10:40 a.m. – Decision to promote Quinten Lawrence from the practice squad to active roster and then have in inactive for the game does not make much sense. Only reason would seem to be the chance to another team was interesting in signing him off the practice squad, so the Chiefs decided to protect him by adding him to their active roster. It’s hard to believe any team would be interested in Lawrence at this point, but stranger things have happened.

10:45 a.m. – The Chiefs have gone light at defensvie back today, as they have only eight active for the game. That doesn’t have much effect on defense, but in special teams since guys like Donald Washington and Reshard Langford were big contributors in the coverage teams.

10:48 a.m. – Scott Green and his crew will officiate the game. They are among the least active flag throwers in the league.

10:50 a.m. – RB Jamaal Charles spent some extra time on the field, catching passes from Tyler Palo after the rest of the passers and receivers went to the locker room.

10:52 a.m. – Titans K Rob Bironas is on the field kicking and from 53 yards his kick hit the crossbar and bounced through. He then hit from 54 yards, the ball barely clearing the cross bar. When he changed and kicked toward the east uprights, he was well short from 52 yards.

11 a.m. – Only the kickers, holders and snappers are on the field right now, as both teams are taking their time going out into the cold to begin their pre-game sessions. Usually by this time of the morning, there are quite a few players dressed and on the field. Right now, there are a total of six from both teams.

11:01 a.m. – The Titans defensive backs are the first position group on the field.

11:05 a.m. – Chiefs K Ryan Succop was good from 50 yards kicking towards the west uprights. From 53 yards, he was good with height and another five yards at the end of the kick.

11:20 a.m. – Chiefs GM Scott Pioli and Titans WR Randy Moss share a big hug and conversation at the 50-yard line. Remember, Pioli was with the Patriots when they traded for Moss with the Raiders.

11:21 a.m. – It appears the extra captain today as chosen by head coach Todd Haley is going to be SS Eric Berry. It probably has some connection between the Tennessee Titans and the University of Tennessee.

11:30 a.m. – Compared to previous home games, the crowd figures to be far less than capacity based on the parking lots and early arrivers inside Arrowhead. Not sure what the team will announce as paid attendance but the crowd will be less than 50,000.

11:32 a.m. – The Titans have wrapped up their warm up and the Chiefs are close to finishing their session. Enjoy the game and remember we’ll have plenty of coverage starting late this afternoon on this important game for the Chiefs.

Bob I really appreciate your writings and your web site, however you keep calling Pioli’s first draft disasterous. That’s just sour grapes on your part. Matt Cassel, Mike Vabrel and Ryan Succop came out of that draft. Give it a rest!
