Pre-Game – Chiefs vs. Rams

From the Edward Jones Dome, St. Louis

QB Matt Cassel on the active list for today’s game. Went through pre-game warm-up with the whole team like he’s going to start at quarterback. No official word from the Chiefs. More details below.

10 a.m. CST – Good morning from the ‘Loo, where today the Chiefs and Rams are glad they have a dome to play in today. The weather outside is cold, and there were some big, fluffy snowflakes falling at times. But inside, they say it will be 70 degrees. How warm it may become depends on the sometimes less than interested Rams fans. Based on the streets of downtown last night and this morning there will be plenty of red in the crowd this afternoon.

10:01 a.m. – No sign yet of QB Matt Cassel. In the last hour he did not come out for any type of warm-up or workout. The pitchers and catchers are out early for their pre-pre-game session and Cassel is not with them. But, he seldom gets out for the first five or 10 minutes.

10:02 a.m. – Out for early individual workouts are C Rudy Niswanger and FB Tim Castille; an early indication of our first two inactive players for today.

10:03 a.m. - OLB Tamba Hali is out for his normal pre-game workout with Grand Master Joe Kim. In these 20-minute sessions of hand-to-hand fighting, Hali gets a full day’s workout in before the game even starts.

10:07 a.m. – Matt Cassel makes his first appearance on the field. Right now he’s doing some light tossing to warm up and he’s not joined the pre-pre-game passing routine just yet. He’s wearing a wrap around his lower torso, the same one he was wearing during practice this past week. He’s now stopped to chat up backup Rams QB A.J. Feeley.

10:13 a.m. – Matt Cassel is NOT taking part in the throwing session, a pretty good indication that he’s going to be designated inactive today, probably as the No. 3 quarterback. It’s hard to believe that Cassel would be playing if he’s not throwing in this session. Right now, he’s standing behind Brodie Croyle and Tyler Palko and watching them throw.

10:19 a.m. – Could be meaningless, but WR Dwayne Bowe is really fighting the ball during the throwing session. He’s dropped a number of throws that have been right in his hands and those that he’s caught, he seems to have his hands out of place. He was much the same way in the throwing session in San Diego and ended up catching one pass and dropping three passes.

10:32 a.m. – Inactive players for the Chiefs today: CB Mike Richardson, S Ricky Price, FB Mike Cox, S Reshard Langford, LB Charlie Anderson, C Rudy Niswanger and DT Anthony Toribio. The inactive third quarterback is Tyler Palko.

10:34 a.m. – Inactive players for the Rams today: S Michael Lewis, CB Justin King, RB Kenneth Darby, FB Mike Karney, LB David Nixon, G John Greco, WR Mardy Gilyard and TE Michael Hoomanawanui.

10:36 a.m. – That Matt Cassel is on the active roster for today’s game based on what we saw in the last 90 minutes is a surprise. I will be surprised again if he starts. If he was fully healthy to play then he should have been healthy enough to participate in the extra throwing session. It’s hard to read the tea leaves on this one, but one thing is obvious – whether Cassel plays or watches, he’s not 100 percent physically. No surprise there, g iven it was 11 days ago that he had the appendectomy.

10:38 a.m. – Todd Haley mixing up the game-day roster for Sunday a bit compared to recent games. Tim Castille in at FB, instead of Mike Cox. Donald Washington in at safety and Ricky Price out. LB Corey Mays active and S Reshard Langford out. The rest of the inactives – Anderson, Niswanger, Toribio, Richardson – were expected.

10:54 a.m. – Ryan Succop was strong and straight from 54 yards kicking towards the north uprights. Of course, he should be given that he’s kicking inside and there’s firm footing and no wind.

11:00 a.m. – Two coaches who are older than dirt are conversing in the end zone – Chiefs offensive line coach Bill Muir and former offensive line coach-head coach Jim Hanifan.

11:20 a.m. – Chiefs have finished their stretching and are in a throwing  drill, where Matt Cassel is taking a regular turn.  They’ve now broken into a smaller version of the 7-on-7 drill that they do every pre-game and Cassel is taking the No. 1 snaps.

11:36 a.m. – Ron Winter and his crew will officiate the game today. The Chiefs had Winter back in Houston. Generally this crew does not throw a lot of flags, averaging right around 10 per game. They do however, tend to have a lot of huddles and discussions, i.e. they like the camera time.

11:38 a.m. – Kickoff just 25 minutes away. Enjoy the game and don’t forget we’ll be positing stories post-game all through the night, so check back and check back often.

10:14 a.m. – ick … although I like Brodie a lot I’d love to see Cassel back. Not sure Brodie is trusted as much as he needs to be. Playcalling was weird and way to conservative last week with him at the helm.
Well, he’s got some more reps with the receivers by now.

I hope Romeo and Charlie had a long talk with these guys. If we get thrashed again today there will be no end to the talk as to how far we have fallen. I can still see Haley wearing a tee shirt with “CHIEFS WILL” on the back. Well we are going to find out if they have any left. The “WILL” to WIN that is.

Gosh, Bob, you are making this game look more like an exibition game rather than a game with playoff implications. I know, Michael, you like what’s going on.

Bob – any clue why Castille is getting the nod over Cox at FB? Will be interesting to see how Brodie responds this week. Hope the offensive line came to play.
