Practice Report Update 12/23

From the Truman Sports Complex

TE Brad Cottam is recovering from surgery to help repair a cracked verterbrae in his neck on Tuesday.

Breaking his normal policy of revealing only the basics about player injuries, head coach Todd Haley reported that Cottam’s is doing well after the procedure.

“He’s already on the road to recovery,” Haley said of the tight end. “Everything went very well fromwhat I was told. He was uncomfortable there for a couple of days. From a safety standpoint, we wanted to keep him in a safe position.”

Cottam suffered the injury during Sunday’s game against Cleveland. After making a catch, his legs were taken out from under him on the tackle and Cottam landed awkwardly on the back of his head and neck.  He was momentarily dazed but walked off the field to the sidelines and after being examined by team doctors and trainers, he went back in to the game.

“We checked him out and he said he was good to go,” Haley said.  “It was only well after the fact that he started experiencing any pain.”

Sunday evening Cottam was hospitalized where x-rays and other tests showed the crack. The second year tight end out of Tennessee never lost any ability to move his arms and legs.

“From everything that I’ve been told there’s a great chance of him getting back on track,” Halely said.

During Wednesday’s indoor practice, S DaJuan Morgan (chest) and LB Justin Rogers (thigh) did not participate because of their injuries according to the Chiefs.

Limited in participation in the work were LG Brian Waters (hamstring), CB Brandon Flowers (shoulder), DE Alex Magee (hamstring) and DE Glenn Dorsey (knee). Getting full work in the session was RT Ryan O”Callaghan (knee).  In the early portion of practice that was open to the media, Waters and Flowers did not participate in the work.

For the Bengals, three players missed practice because of injuries: S Chris Crocker (anke), DT Tank Johnson (foot) nd T Domata Peko (knee).

Just found out the Chiefs have added two more cut WRs. That Pioli and Haley can sure beat the bushes to find guys could not get enough reps with so many standing in line to catch a ball. What is next more TEs? Is this part of the plan or the process??

Process. Chiefs have to keep searching for guys that can add depth to the receving core until the draft comes then they can pluck some talent. As for today’s press confernece I thought it was very stupid for that reporter to ask Haley whether he gave the bird to a fan. Secondly to ask if media say things about him was an even more stupid questions. Love Haley respone he’s going to focus on the Chiefs not that other BS if i might parphrase him a little bit. Thats sign of a true coach to me. Get this guy some talent Pioli he’ll produce you a winner.

    el cid,

Haley said just a day or two ago, “Catch the ball, or we’ll find someone that will”.

So, he’s just doing exactly what he said. I can’t blame them, really. Is there anyone available right now that’s any good? No. But, at least they’re trying to do something. Besides, these are practice squad guys added with two weeks to go in the season. They’re likely just warm bodies for practice at this point.

If it is cold outside, you can burn down your house and you will be warm for a while. That can be said to “at least they’re trying to do something”. Why not try some OL or LB or a speedy special teamer? Maybe one of these two are speedy but based on past action, I doubt it. Haley’s quote might suggest all the other “off the street” types have not been flaming successes but because he fail with the last 5 no reason to question why these two are so important. Just my view of course.

Ed, did not mean to ignor you. Process, imagine that and the process does not include any player who is not a WR. A wonder that in 32 teams, the Chiefs can only find WRs worth the process. Not a S, LB, or anybody, just WRs. Just my view of course, again.

    el cid,

Point taken. My only response might be that there are more WR’s out there with a snowballs chance in hell at making some sort of a difference, than there are Safeties or LB’s that might. But, that’s just a guess.

Maybe Haley thinks there’s enough talent on Defense, but not at WR? A hint of coaching changes to come? Again, just a wild guess.

Good point as always. You are talking about the same defense that gave up Jim Brown’s rushing record to a sub and a special team that gave up 2 TD to the best returner in 09 by kicking to him. Yes, I can see where Haley should ignor the superior Def and Spec. Team of the Chiefs as opposed to a multitude of backup WRs, yeah, I definitely see the need.

Nah…not at all. El cid and I usually see things differently, but he always makes good points. Just because we disagree on the road taken, we both agree on the destination. We want the same thing…for our team to be good again. So, it’s cool.
