Podcasting: The NFL & Czar 12/17
Our man John Czarnecki, the information man for the FOX-TV NFL pre-game show and columnist for FOXSPORTS.com joins us again this week to talk about pro football and obviously our conversation centers around the Chiefs and who may be the team’s new GM.Â
Enjoy.

:NEWSFLASH:
Based on Czarnecki’s two cents worth, Rin offers that I am (only) 50% behind Herm…the other 50% is just purely being a ‘counter’ – point as well balance – to the whining contingent that derides Edwards at every turn.
I understand the desire many to completely clean sweep the house as it were – yes, even you there in the corners Herm- alas, aft the glow has worn off, what you end with yet again – as ever, & as always – is square one.
Czarnacki talks about changing the culture. In fact, all you end up doing is ‘ex’changing one culture for another, and there be no guarantee a new one will be any better.
Carl? His time had come. Herm? As I said I’m at least 50% in his ‘corner’ – which by deduction means I’ve almost as much concern, even doubt.
So, if a new GM takes chainsaw to adminstration – and watch it new GM, don’t you dare cut into Bob Gretz – Rin will bask in the short glow the new warmth, the admonitions, the ‘promises promises’, and then, after the excitement and party hats have come off…will settle in for another few years of rebuilding – just as Herm began to do this year.
Somewhere over the rainbow in the future when we look back, we may find that that bright tomorrow has become but another dead end – one more wrong turn taken as a result of too little faith in the current navigator.
So yes yes, by all means – off with Herm’s head, and too anyone else’s just for the sake change… and then, aft, this lifelong Chiefs fan will then laugh, shake my head- and watch it start all over again.
Two steps forward…two steps back? We shall see -maybe not if we don’t cut out the middleman, Herm.
I hope your wrong Rin, but as a life long Chiefs fan also, I can certainly understand the concern.
Imo, we haven’t developed enough of an identity where new blood in a GM/coaching staff would sit us back much.
Our secondary (Best talent on the team) has been jumping in and out of Tampa 2, cover four, cover 3 and man to man, so what new scheme could/would be a huge step backwards? Possibly a 3/4? yes, maybe. But in spite of what some say, I think Dorsey and Tyler could anchor a 3/4 line, we already need LB’s and D-ends anyway.
As far as the offense goes, it’s begging for Change, The spread is fun to watch, but I have serious doubts it can be our base offense.
I think the Coaching staff made a mistake in going to the spread almost exclusively, if this staff is changed, they have put Thigpen at a serious disadvantage, I want to see him operate out of a pro set offense, if he can’t make the adjustments, then we have to find someone who can.
I do worry about this draft, if we are going to change coaches it needs to be done ASAP.
I’m afraid we are already going to be behind the 8 ball on prep. for the draft with all the uncertainty with the staff.
I agree JOhn. The spread has to go at least not full-time. I would like to see it used in a two-minute situation or if the offense comes out flat on the first couple drives. I think Thigpen can do well in a more conventional offense if given the offseason to prepare as the starter and not the 3rd string guy. As for the coaching situation I think the changes will be made 2 or 3 months before April and that is more than enough time.
I’m not a big fan of Polian if Herm is going to get a free pass for the next several years.
I think there are several coaches out there that have gone through a rebuild team without having the poor coaching as well. Pioli is my vote.
I don’t think Herm will get a free past period beyond next year Red adn GoldRice. If he is retained after 2009 it will be because the Chiefs won 7 or more games next year. And I think it can happen with a more competent GM and a better defensive and special teams coaching staff. And with filling in the holes left in the roster it can happen.
I think thats the biggest thing, coaching. I know I’ve read it here before, but I haven’t seen any development from the D line, and little to none in the secondary.
The in game adjustments are non-existant, and Herm just paces the sidelines like he’s clueless. That has to change.
I agree defensive coaching has to change, and our special teams hasn’t been special to speak of, but I think they’ve been much worse years past.

I just have a suspicion that ‘if’ Herm stays, it will be with the understanding he acquiesces to making changes on his coaching staff.
I’m not certain he would – or should necessarily, unless he himself sees the benefit. Yesterday in his press conference I detected (as I have afore) a bit of gentle defiance his, whence he answered with (paraphrasing) – “I don’t need to” – this in response to the question as to whether he needed to prove himself to any new GM.
Either Herm is cock sure of himself, or resigned to going out on his own terms- true to himself to the end.
Before listening to that interview I hadn’t given any thought to Pioli because I’d always heard he had no desire to leave the Pats organization.
If he’s truly interested in the Lions job then you’d think he’d be willing to consider the Chiefs as well. That would make things very interesting.
Boy oh boy, I’m new to this site but this was excellent info and thanks to Mr. Gretz for putting it up here.
I think there were many good points raised in this podcast including the example of Thomas Dimitroff in Atlanta, hiring HIS choice of coaches in Mike Smith, getting his RB in FA and hitting the ultimate prize in the draft with Matt Ryan.
From cellar rats and dog fighting issues to a potential playoff team in one year! Then, there’s the Miami example almost as apt.
Anyway, I do believe the next GM should have a free hand in dealing the cards for where the 2009 Chiefs sit at, hopefully, the final table.
We need Carmen Policy as our GM now he knows how 2 run a franchise! he he
Keep up the unproductive work Coach Edwards. ALL of KC is sick of you and we know that you will make excuses and lead us back to 2 and 14 very soon now.
AND NOW, Clark Hunt has RE-affirmed Herm’s The Man on the hot seat!
