Podcasting: Len’s Look 12/25

Hall of Fame quarterback Len Dawson joins us for a discussion on many things Chiefs and football related on this holiday.  Len speaks of Tyler Thigpen’s recent performances, whether football players and teams need to learn how to win, what he would do if he were to be become Chiefs GM and as the Chiefs close out the season at Paul Brown Stadium against the Bengals on Sunday, Len remembers some stories about the great coach.

Enjoy!

I think this is the best feature on the site when Bob and Len kick it around so thanks for the podcast. Some personal thoughts on the content this time, and they’re only MY opinions:

    1) Reading between the lines, it seems highly likely that the new GM will also name his head coach which comes as no surprise but the inference made by Len was telling.

    2) There will be some veteran free agent leaders signed in the off-season as the current roster is almost completely bereft of same.

    3) The new boss where all final decisions to be made in the near future will be on the desk of Clark Hunt so an early indicator of the new GM will be someone that Hunt can trust, like, respect and someone who will defer the final decisions over to the owner.

This opens the door to additional speculation as to who that GM candidate will be. Obviously one without a giant ego who wants total control which pares the field somewhat.

I am generally disappointed in this podcast. I like Len Dawson. However, he didn’t make any valid points at all. Why is he blaming Tyler when its our anemic defense that isn’t stopping anyone. I thought it might be intersting to look at several of the qbs for this season up to now and some of these are seasoned qbs and playoff qbs.

QB is not our problem and to claim he is a bunch of crud. He stacks up pretty well against some of the best. Plus he did his in 10 games most of these have 16 games under their belts. DEFENSE!!! is what is killing us not our quarterback. Our offensive productions since Thigpen is nothing short of outstanding.

  • December 25, 2008  - Carlm says:

    sorry 15 games not 16

See you back in KC as Chiefs Head Coach in 2009 Herm!

    :-)

  • December 25, 2008  - Tribal Warfare says:

Carlm if a Franchise QB(BPA) is available when KC picks with the 2nd or 3rd overall pick you select him period. Thigpen is a competent backup who plays in the spread/option, but has extreme trouble playing under center

  • December 25, 2008  - Carlm says:

I seriously disagree tribal we have glaring needs elsewhere. Lol a backup thats a bunch of bull. I feel like we are fixing to relive the elvis grbac rich gannon fiasco again because people aren’t paying attention. If your team scores 20-30 pts per game they should win unless your DEFENSE!!! CANT STOP LITTLE SISTER FROM SCORING!!! I would not pick a quarterback in the 2nd or 3rd slot mainly because there is not a quarterback out there that is worth a pick or even close to thigpens ability. 10games he has as good or better stats than most of the starting qbs in the nfl and you want to put him as a backup.

  • December 25, 2008  - Mark says:

If Brodie Croyle or a higher drafted young QB ws progressing as much as Thigpen has from his 1st shaky start to now, there woud be no discussion about taking a QB. Tyler has been nothing short of phenomenal, and the Biggest bright spot we’ve had this season, by a TON. We went into this season with the goal of establishing our QBOTF. We have. But it’s not the one we thought. It’s one who may be more promising, as he has the added dimension of great mobility and a dangerous runner. To rag on him for ANYTHING, while absolving the Head Caoch of any blame for anything, is truly silly.

  • December 26, 2008  - ED says:

Agreed Mark. Tyler has done an outstanding job this season. What Len and Bob refused to talk about is the lack of balance in the play-calling for Tyler. To ask any NFL quarterback, especially a young one to throw the ball 35 to 40 times is too much. Its not like we can’t run the ball out of the spread so there is no reason why we shouldn’t be more balanced. Right also Carlm, the defense has cost more games than the offense anytime you put up 31 points you shouldn’t have to worry about losing the game period.

And Tribal Warfare. According to who. Its not like playing under center something Tyler can’t learn to do. The spread is just something he feels most comfortable doing right now. But the guy can spend the offseason developing more throwing the ball from under center its not like nothing that can’t be learned. As for franchise quarterbacks coming out. I live down here in SEC country Matt Stafford isn’t going to be that good on the pro-level he’s very inconsistent in college which definately doesn’t bode well that he’ll be consistent in the pro’s. I like Bradford from OU but the one thing people aren’t talking enough about is the fact that the guy hasn’t been hit in the mouth enough to test his toughness. The guy hasn’t faced alot adversity playing in the Big 12 its not like that is a defensive conference. The guy hasn’t even been touch this year. It’ll be interesting to see how he responds in the Florida game.

  • December 26, 2008  - Big Lee says:

Len recalling his 5 years on the bench is not germaine to today’s NFL. No one keeps a player around for 5 years unless he plays. That may tell you why he wants a veteran guy at QB.

Chiefs have to decide about offense. If we are going back to a traditional offense, then Thiggy is not our guy. He has yet to show he can perform in such a situation. This situation might lend itself to a veteran QB, although not someone who is clearly on the downside of his career. Does anyone believe a Joe Montana-type (the one Carl signed) is best for the franchise now? We can keep Brody as a backup.

If Chiefs believe in the spread, then keep Thiggy and jetison Brody. Draft someone with experience in spread to back up Thiggy, since this offense is the rage in college, and even lower levels. Would not need to use a high pick.

Chiefs still have vast need on front 7 of defense. This draft/FE period has to be about defense first, although more competition is needed on right side of o-line.

  • December 26, 2008  - ED says:

Why are people saying that if we go conventional Tyler can’t do it. I mean really the guy is so dumb he has a learning capacity that cannot allow him to learn how to be more effective in throwing the ball from under center. Come on. Just because he feels more comfortable in the spread doesn’t mean he can’t work out of a conventional style offense. I’ve seen him make a couple of touchdown throws out of conventional offense.

And unless Brodie gains a significant amount of weight why bring him back. The guy is injury prone are we going to depend on him being the #2 and he gets hurt again and we have to go to the #3 man again. We’re not going to catch lightning in the bottle twice like we did with Tyler. IF Brodie doesn’t gain any weight this offseason the team should cut their ties and get another quarterback. As for Tyler the guy can work out of a traditional style offense he just needs the offseason to develop.

  • December 26, 2008  - Rip 'em a new one says:

The new GM, and how many times have we used and seen that phrase over the last couple of weeks, will ultimately determine the direction and future for many players currently on the roster, including Thigpen’s status.

If the new GM brings in his own head coach, all bets are off and the Chiefs are in play for a franchise QB, most likely. The odds are heavily in favor of this happening.

Tyler Thigpen has had his Andy Warhol moments of fleeting fame most likely. I say ‘most likely’ because I have no idea what the new GM will bring to the table with his belief system. If he’s a visionary, then perhaps we’ll see Thigpen as the QBOTF. The naming of the new GM will allow many uncertainties to be known that are still mysteries at present.

Until the new GM is known, we’re all simply guessing on many of the key personnel issues facing the Chiefs.

Tyler Tigpen is with -out a doubt the best First half QB that has played for KC in a long time !!!!!
Quinn Gray relive Tyler ,second half ?
    Works in baseball .

  • December 26, 2008  - jim lloyd says:

Let me add to that– Grays BIO, first sentence, “Quick footed preformer”.
If Tyler is thinking 24 points in his first half, Quinn Gray will have to out do that ,or better .
Damond always did better when he came later , and the big plus ,diff. plays to diff. recivers !

  • December 26, 2008  - tm1946 says:

Come on guys, Thigpen had a good year for a nothing draft pick, from a small college, and cast of from the Min. He was the only saving grace for herm’s season. But he is not accurate. He has not learned to look off DB on a regular basis. When he want to throw Tony, that is where it is going no mater what. I hope he is able to develope and the chiefs are able to stick with him while he does so. But it probably will not happen, the odds are not in his favor.

There is some reason Gray is not playing (with all his skills? I do not want to believe he is any answer because that means the chiefs wasted another year.

  • December 26, 2008  - jim lloyd says:

For every 25 QBs theres are only one Tom and Matts in the quick fits , plus who knows how many just can not get to the top level ?

With all the MONEY and need for speed results are on a very high reaching shelf .
Its like reaching for that gold RING , but theve moved it out sooo far its getting hard catch !
Can ony one name more that fit that mold ?

  • December 26, 2008  - Carlm says:

Tm he wasnt a castoff from minnesota they even said they were trying to put him on their practice squad so they could develop him when kc claimed him off of waivers. Also he has only started 10 nfl games. With experience he will be able to look off those dbs. and if you look he has less interceptions than a lot of those qbs i put up their. My word people use some sense. He’s basically a rookie qb and does a dang good job. With an off season to work on the nfl set he shouldnt have a problem and fyi I like the spread we are doing now. They score pts. again I’m going to yell DEFENCE!! is where they need the work. With a decent d the sky is the limit with this team get rid of gunther hes like Carl stayed too long in one place.

  • December 26, 2008  - ED says:

Agreed Carlm. With everything. The defense stunk it up this year. Too me why all this pressure on the offense to score all these points how about the defense stop someone for a change. The defense might have had 2 good games Chargers and maybe another one. OTHER than that they struggled this year with the lack of a pass rusher and linebacker position has been banged up. In 2007 yes I would say the offense was the problem because they couldn’t get a freaking first down let alone score points. But this year its clearly defense. If they keep this offense intact improve the o-line and spend this offseason developing Tyler should be even better offense next year. If the defense can just catch up we can have a winning season next year. But If Herm happens to be brought back Gunther must be shown the door. He has stayed way too long and we need someone who is more competent in developing linebackers and defensive lineman and someone who understands the Cover 2 scheme better.

  • December 26, 2008  - Big Lee says:

If Thiggy could run a conventional offense why didn’t the Chiefs simply do that? Why didn’t the Chiefs just say the Atlanta game (Thiggy’s only one with traditional set) was a bad game against a good team? NFL teams don’t abandon offensive philosophies, and embrace a college offense, unless they have to. Especially a coach as conservative as Herm.

Listen, I’m not down on Thiggy. I agree this will all come down to whatever the new boss decides. And the Chiefs must improve the front 7 on defense, so maintaining whatever is salvageable on offense is preferrable, and maybe that is Thigpen. But be realistic, please.

  • December 27, 2008  - ED says:

I’m being realistic if this guy gets an opportunity to practice the whole offseason in a conventional offense he can learn how to do it. YOu guys act like its impossible for a quarterback to play in a conventional offense. Give the guy an offseason to learn both styles and he’ll be fine. Obviously he’s a fast learner seeing the progression he’s made from the Atlanta game till now.

  • December 27, 2008  - Big Lee says:

You may be right, Ed. But why didn’t the Chiefs just let him stay in a traditional offense? It may not have anything to do with his ability to learn. It may have to do with his physical skills, such as his release point. It may have to do with things he can’t control, such as his height. I’m not implying anything about Thigpen’s ability to learn. It may be something that he simply can’t overcome. Do you really believe they can maximize LJ in a spread set? If time in a traditional set were the answer, then why abandon it?

  • December 27, 2008  - ED says:

We went to the spread because it was something he’s more comfortable doing. Don’t give me the height crap Breeze isn’t the tallest guy in the world come on with that crap. The guy was 3rd string quarterback how much preparation can you have in the NFL being 3rd on the roster and having to learn a traditional style offense coming from a spread offense. That being said with an offseason dedicated to his development he can make the transition.

Once again it was an easier transition to make going from 3rd guy on the depth chart to the starter. Thats why we’ve been using the spread.

  • December 27, 2008  - ED says:

You don’t have time in the middle of the season to develop a guy in a traditional offense so that went with something he’s more comfortable with. With offseason ahead and him being elevated to a starter or backup he can make the transition.
