Podcasting: Len’s Look 12/12

Hall of Fame quarterback Len Dawson joins us to talk about many things involving the Chiefs.  Len speaks of the spread offense, about Tyler Thigpen’s future, about the need for the defense to add some playing talent and so much more.

It’s the legend himself.  Enjoy.

Great stuff once again from Len and Bob. I definately think Tyler is the answer at quarterback. I also like the spread but like to see it more as a hybrid form not a full time thing. I think the coaching staff needs have Tyler learn how to throw the ball from center more and run the ball more.

The Chiefs has proven they can run the ball in the spread. With Larry 94yard game against Oakland and 81 yard game against the Bills. I just think Chan is falling in love too much with the passing game. 11 carries for Larry last week is awful. They have to find away to offensively get the guy 22 to 25 carries whether its in a conventional or spread style offense. This will help the offense score more points if they have more balance to the offense. The drives we have scored on the past couple of games we well balance drives. The drives we’ve gone 3 and out on are drives where we threw the ball all 3 downs.
Balance needs to be the key in the play-calling Sunday.

Defensively we need to get out of Cover 2 because its only successful when you have a good pass rush something we do not have right now. Babin has done ok, but for the most part its been horrible. In a Cover 2 scheme you need good defensive ends to get after the quarterback because for the most part the linebackers are out in coverage covering the flats. That being said I say the rest of the season we need to play alot of man and just blitz the outside linebackers because of the lack of pass rush we’re getting from our defensive ends. WE’re not good enough on defense yet to beat good teams in this league, but hopefully in the offseason we address our defensive end position and improve at the linebacker position.

And to add to that. I do disagree with Len about the offense not being productive. The spread has move the chains and has scored more points in the last 6 games then we did in the previous 7. Has the production been down the last couple of games yes. But I think that is more so because Bradley has been missed and the lack of balance in the play-calling. I think Bradley missing the last couple games and the offense production being down just shows how valuable he is as a #2 receiver. But I still say Chan must get Larry the ball at least 22 to 25 times this game. He’s had big games against the Chargers defense as well.

I want to especially thank Bob for this podcast and his site that provides the best NFL news and information that’s out there from ANY other website. I check in with several of those, KC and others, on a regular basis and this one has no competition, so if you’re a first time viewer here, consider yourself priviliged and fortunate.

Alas, in the spirit of full disclosure, I cannot follow this Chief’s team any longer. Not a minor statement, as being a KC born and bred guy and fan of the team for several decades, this isn’t an easy comment to make.

I’m going to shop for another team to follow in 2009 and beyond because, and I think I owe it to all as to the reason, I’m now convinced that the current ownership is both weak and interested only in the status quo of revenue streams and not wanting to put a winning product on the field.

Clark Bidwell, err, Hunt, is a poor excuse of a NFL owner. I see him as a silver spoon type, riding on his father’s legacy and incapable of making the tough decisions and judgments to turn this franchise back into a winner. He doesn’t have the stomach for it.

I’ll still check back in here from time to time because of Bob’s excellent views and features but won’t be commenting from this point forward. Take care everyone.

    Rich

Rich if Clark didn’t care about the team he wouldn’t be allowing Herm to bring in all this young talent to help make the team better long term. Nobody said rebuilding was going to be easy but the ultimate goal of it is to win and win for the future and long term.

  • December 13, 2008  - ED says:

Every good NFL team has went through this process to better their long term future. The Giants in 2003 2004 and the Titans in 2004 and 2005 season both teams with 4 and 12 and 5 and 11 seasons. The payoff for both teams are right now and for the Giants last year with a Super Bowl victory. Stop looking in the short term and look long term. You’re giving up right when the team is on the cust of turning it around. You will only look like a fool if you give up now and next year when we’re winning you’re back on board with being a Chiefs fan. So hang in there.

Keep up the unproductive work Coach Edwards. ALL of KC is sick of you and we know that you will make excuses and lead us back to 2 and 14 very soon now.

AND NOW, Clark Hunt has RE-affirmed Herm’s The Man On The Hot Seat!

    :)
