Personnel File – Indianapolis Colts

Personnel leader: Vice Chairman Bill Polian – he’s been building pro football rosters since 1978, when he spent five years as a pro scout for the Chiefs. He later worked in the CFL and USFL, before helping build the Buffalo teams that went to four Super Bowls and the expansion Carolina Panthers. Polian took over as Colts GM in 1998. He’s a six-time winner of the league’s Executive of the Year Award.

Key aides: Vice President and General Manager Chris Polian and Director of Player Personnel Tom Telesco.

Personnel department: 14 executives and scouts.

Personnel philosophy: build the roster through the draft and undrafted free agents, filling in the holes with veteran free agents.

Salary cap status: as of October 1, Colts had $5.4 million remaining under the cap.

Big money contracts: QB Peyton Manning (5-year, $90 million), DE Dwight Freeney (6-year, $72 million), TE Dallas Clark (6-year, $36 million), LB Gary Brackett (6-year, $33 million), RB Joseph Addai (3-year, $14 million).

Soon to be free agents – Current starters without 2012 contracts are WR Reggie Wayne, DE Robert Mathis, C Jeff Saturday, WR Pierre Garcon and RG Ryan Diem.

Overview – Consider that all those seasons with double-digit victories has had the Colts drafting at the bottom of the first round in the last decade. They aren’t perfect, but the Colts have not missed on many first round picks over the last 10 years. They’ve also found some gems in the later rounds, a true sign of a good personnel department, choices like 6th-round picks like FS Antoine Bethea and WR Pierre Garcon. They found both of those players not at big schools but at Howard (Bethea) and Mt. Union College (Garcon).

And consider this: in the last 10 seasons, the Colts have had 15 players earn 48 trips to the Pro Bowl. They drafted 13 of those 15 players.

However, recent first-rounders have not been immediate contributors like the team saw in the past. They drafted WR Anthony Gonzalez out of Ohio State in the first round in 2007, but later picks like Garcon and Austin Collie have gotten more playing time. In 2009, they drafted RB Donald Brown in the first round from UConn, but he’s played in 28 games, touching the ball 238 times for 1,152 yards.

Wow, from 1998 to 2010, Polian was Exec of year six time and Pioli 4x, this is the battle of the execs sunday. Anyone, do they have more than one exec during any given year?
