On The Cusp Of Tight End Immortality

With 50 yards receiving on Sunday against Denver, Tony Gonzalez will hold every major receiving record for tight ends in the history of pro football. Over his 177-game career with the Chiefs, Gonzalez has averaged 56.6 receiving yards per game.
That’s why, despite the team’s offensive problems of late, this weekend against the Broncos should be record setting for the former first-round draft choice of the Chiefs (1997) and nine-time Pro Bowler.
For what Tony G is thinking, here’s a transcript of a segment he did on Wednesday on the NFL Network.
Here are the important dates in Gonzalez’s climb up the receiving yardage charts.

OH thanks Bob, good timing, I just put a post on cup o Chiefs about Tony G. Just my luck!
Maybe wishful thinking, but I hope Tony has a big day and gets the record as well as a win.
Go Chiefs!
I hope Tony G gets exactly what he wants. If that means leaving the Chiefs to go have a chance to win before he’s done. I hope it happens, he’s earned it and no great offensive player deserves to see his career end in futility under a Herm Edwards Offense. Normally I’d want fair value, try to fleece another team, but with Carl, we’re usually the fleece-es, not the fleece-ers. In Tony’s case, I wouldn’t play hardball. If he wants to leave, contact the team(s) he’d like to go to and get a deal done.
Was I the only one to see that Tony himself said that he wouldn’t concider leaving the Chiefs until the end of the season, if at all. He also said that he loves being a Chief. Some people just need to get off of their high horses. You don’t know everything that is going on. You see what the media tells you and what you see at home on your pretty high def TVs. The Chiefs are rebuilding, which is very much needed. They are going to lose some games, which usually happens when a team rebuilds. Herm didn’t want to rebuild the whole team at once, but is going to have to because Dickie V couldn’t or wouldn’t and allowed the team to get old. This is also a test for the fans…Anyone can show love and support for a team that is winning, only a true fan can do so for a team that is losing.
The old chiefs let Curley Culp go for personal reasons. If that is what Tony wants, that is ok.
Justin there are so many ways to argue with you but what is the use. You know herm personally apparently, Dick V. also. I only suggest get a better definition of “fan”, it has nothin to do with love and support of a losing team. But do not let me rain on your parade, hopefully, we will have a good sunday with a competitive team on the field (not Denver).
tmessina,
I don’t know Herm or Dick. If you would like to know my definition of fan all you have to do is pick up any dictionary. –noun 1. a person with an extreme and uncritical enthusiasm or zeal. Did you hear that, uncritical…..come on now, say it with me. UNCRITICAL ENTHUSIASM. It sounds to me like you should reevaluate your definition of fan. And, sorry to get your hopes up, but you have to try a lot harder to rain on my parade.
I dont know how many times we have to keep hearing the Vermiel argument. I’ve shown it is wrong with just about every stat imaginable. In any case, this is Herm’s 3rd yr and those excuses are now unacceptable.
Here are Tony’s stats
http://www.nfl.com/players/tonygonzalez/profile?id=GON587645
55 yrds game 1
39 yrds game 2
35 yrds game 3
Those are pathetic #s compared to what he is capable of. Blame that on Hermcuffs (who handcuffs the O coaches).
Gonzo getting 50 in this game is not anywhere close to guaranteed.
If I were in this bunker mentality front office for the Chiefs, I would recognize a couple of things:
1) Tony won’t be around when the rebuild is complete, assuming of course, that it will take another 2 seasons, at least*, after this one. * Assuming the Chiefs find a viable QB in free agency or the draft.
2) Tony has given the best of his youth and ability to the Chiefs over the past decade without a return on that invested effort for whatever reason.
Let him go. He deserves a shot which won’t come with the Chiefs before the twi-light shadows of his career render him a non-factor. Let him go.
Justin, when you hear HE/HIMSELF say that after the Atlanta game he called his agent!
Now I’m no genius but to me it’s obvious the just of that conversation.
Now granted he also said that he called his family, his brother and others, so cooler heads prevailed THIS time.
How many more before he gets pissed and gives up and ask for a trade?
findthedr,
Again, Herm is rebuilding on both sides of the ball right now. The players are young and inexperienced and will produce stats like that for a few games. If you would actually read this site instead of just ramble along, this is really Herm’s 1st year of rebuilding.
JohnNdallas,
But, He/Himself said that he would give the rest of the season. Calling your agent is far from an actual trade. He may be getting his ducks in a row so he can be traded if need be.
BS!!
Herm has had 3 yrs of draft picks, plus plenty of UDFA/FA pickups.
As for your defintion of a ‘Fan’, it sounds more like a defintion of a HOMER.
Open your eyes.
I want tony to retire a Chief and I pray he does, but more importantly, I want Tony to feel gratified at the end of his career.
If that is with the Chiefs as a sure lock for The Hall Of Fame that would be a blessing, but if he feels his career won’t be complete without a legit. shot at a run to be a World Champion all I can say is Via Con Dios My Friend.
Well Gee thanks Justin for understanding my point
findthedr,
My eyes are open. 31 other teams have draft picks and udfa/fa pickups. Are they all rebuilding as well? And let’s not attempt to put me down just because you don’t understand.
Ah don’t fret it Justin, I’m a “HOMER” too.
Proudly I might add.
Oh believe me, I won’t. I’ve been in many stronger battles of word/wit and come out on top.
Good job findthedr, as usual. It’s AMAZING how DV gets blamed for things NOW, but I strongly suspect nary a bad word was said about him while he was here coaching, by those same people. I know Bob didn’t, but he has a valid excuse, he is a Chief employee and can’t be as objective as we can.
JohnNdallas, we are ALL homers, that’s why we root for our team, but thankfully most of us aren’t BLIND Homers. Part of being a fan is being able to be honest about your own team, and not just turn a blind eye to incompetance, much like being a good Patriot is being able to criticize the good old USA when she deserves it, and not just mindlessly chanting USA USA USA.
First off the old Chiefs team traded Curley Culp to Houston because he threatened to go to the USFL. They got what they could for him. Also Mike Garrett threatened to go play baseball because he wanted more money if I remember right, so they traded him prior to the 1971 season. All teams will try to get as much out of a player in a trade as they can, it’s the GM’s job.
I would like to see Tony get his ring as much as anyone here, as it would be a great reward for all the good times he’s given us. Plus it wouldn’t hurt in helping him get into the pro football hall of fame on the first ballot. But lets face it, he knew this year was going to be tough. I bet he is hoping next year see’s a real turn around with the talent they are getting. After next year he is going to be gone, wither he retires or gets released so he can go elsewhere. I just hope he breaks the record at home Sunday, with a win also would be extra sweet for him.
Go Chiefs!
Merwin, I don’t see the Chiefs giving Tony an out right release! That too would piss me off.
IF he decides he wants to go hopefully the Chiefs can get a fair deal that works for Tony and the Chiefs.
I am a “blind homer”… No doubt about it. But I don’t mind the critical comments as you guys can normally back it up with a little something and its pretty entertaining. It’s just not my personality to think negatively is why I always see the good things and not so much the bad. Even though there seems to be much more bad right now. But I think we can all agree that everybody involved in this site wants one thing…. A K.C. victory. No matter how we express our feelings of the team. I hope we all get what we want sooner rather than later.
I think seeing Gonzalez in any other uniform would be like seeing Favre in Jets uniform…just not right.
With that said, I’m not sure this is what we need to be worrying or arguing about right now. Let’s cross that bridge when we get to it. The bridge we’re at now is the Donkeys at Arrowhead. Sure would be nice to get that win…especially since I live in Denver.
Na, BlakeB it would be worse than that.
It would be like watching your wife cook in another mans kitchen.
Does Tony cook in your kitchen?
I’m thinking this is ‘code’ for something. roflmao
He He He
Thats not right! LOL
I have to confess findthedr…. I stole that from Howie Long, someone asked him what it was like seeing Marcus playing for the Chiefs, and that was his response.
And DON’T even go there with Marcus Allen!
LOL
All I can say is “Go Tony Go” for this weekends game.
If he ever decided a change of teams was needed for him to complete his career then so be it, although I would hate to see him in someone else’s kitchen.
lol
LOL, Me too!
I will be at the game hoepfully seeing NFL history! I hope Arrowhead is full so we can all “hopefully” see a win and TONY break the record. He deserves the support and a sold out crowd!!
Was it just me or what, but when Marty was coaching, it seemed you could take three things for granted. We would beat the Raiders, the Raiders would beat the Broncos, and the Broncos would beat us. Marty always seemed to be jinxed by John Elway led teams until that game Joe led us to a late score on MNF. Lets hope for a repeat performance by this team, as unlikely as it seems. I just hope Tony get his record in front of the home town fans. Go Chiefs!
I dont even what to begin to think about what Gonzo’s stats would be if he had an all pro QB throwing to him for all his career or most of it. I believe records that would never be broken!
