No Promises At Kickoff Luncheon

The annual Chiefs Kickoff Luncheon was held Tuesday at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center.

Many times in the past this affair has been a time when the Chiefs players, coaches, administrators and owners have talked of Super Bowls, playoffs and winning.

Not so for the 2009 version. GM Scott Pioli and head coach Todd Haley never used the words Super Bowl or playoffs as they spoke to the assembled crowd.

They promised only that they and the team would work hard and become mentally tough.

“I don’t know when we are going to win, but we are going to win,” Pioli told the group in the Regency Ballroom. “Until the time that we win, you are going to get nothing but hard work. That’s the only thing that we can promise.

“We are going to work hard, the coaches are going to work hard, the players are going to work hard. Right now we have a group of young men here who know what hard work is about. We are going to continue to work until the job is done. There is no other option. That’s what we can promise Kansas City.”

Haley spoke of the pain that change can bring, and the process his team has undergone.

“Losing close to 800 pounds is not pleasant, it’s not easy,” Haley said. “Having the toughest training camp in the National Football League is not easy. But it all has a purpose. At the end of this, we are going to be a mentally tough team.

“Every one of these 53 that end up playing for us will be a mentally tough group. If you are mentally tough, you are physically tough; they go hand in hand. They will be a smart group and will be a well-conditioned group. That we know will give us the best chance to win week in and week out.”

Both Pioli and Haley thanked the crowd and the people of Kansas City for allowing a smooth transition for them and their families, although the winless pre-season did not go unnoticed by daughters and classmates.

“My oldest daughter Taylor is 13 and she came to me the other day and she said ‘You know Dad, they haven’t been bad to me considering what’s happened’,” said Haley. “So I want to thank everybody for that.”

Pioli told a story about his six-year old daughter and a boy who sits next to her and has been teasing her about the Chiefs winless pre-season.

“I promised my wife I wouldn’t give this kid’s name up,” he said. “So we need to get a little winning done here to get the heat off my daughter and he takes it easy on her.

“But I do know where he lives and I know his parents,” Pioli added.

Couldn’t tell whether he was kidding or not.

Those quotes are great. I think the Chiefs are in good hands. I’m very impressed with Haley, Pioli and Clark Hunt. I hope they get the job done as they and we as Chiefs fans envision.

Headed to Baltimore for the first game. Will I be embarrassed to wear red? Hope not.

Sounds like the new regime is only making promises they can keep.
    “How Refreshing”.
I am pleased with their selection of our 53 mentally & physically tough wise men & like most of you, I wish them good luck, good health & hopefully make me one of the proudest fans in the NFL…

Off topic, but Chiefs are checking out Jon Runyan:

I love the guy, but I’m not sure he’s got much left in the tank.

Another Real Rin ® daddy-o blitzkrieg!

“I don’t know when we are going to win”

    - heh heh heh – FINALLY admits the truth nee dirty little secret – “have no idea” – as in “we stink” (sound of violins playing)

    “but”

    - [ drumroll ] Cue ‘Pee Wee’s Big Adventure’, the “everybody’s got a big but” scene, ‘Take’ 2 (many)

“we are going to win” Pioli told the group in the Regency Ballroom.”

    - someday, though I know not where I’ll be then – (cue a paraphrased Judy Garland) as in “Over the Rainbow” – & pass the Kleenex, this one’s a real tearjerker:

    “Somewhere over the cellar
    Way up high
There’s a land I once knew of under New England skies

    Somewhere o’er KC sorrow
    Patriot Way blue
But here all we can do is – dream – that’s all I can do

Someday I’ll wish to have a star
At QB, a crackerjack can find me
Where troubles melt, o-lines don’t sag
No 22’s – just any old hags
    That’s where I’ll try be

    Somewhere over the rainbow
    “W”s fly
But I’m stuck here in Kaycee
Man do we stink oh my.

If other GM’s teams can fly, beyond these losses do not cry… why oh why can’t I?

“Until the time that we win, you are going to get nothing but hard work. That’s the only thing that we can promise.”

    - spoken like a man aft a true Cubbies heart; wait till next year, ne’er comes…

Why sho nuff’! That score again be:

    RAVENS 589 – ch(crack) ie (ouch!) fs (sputter/kerplunk) .4

At best Rin sees BALT scoring 31 points, no less than 20… KC at best 10, or a few as 0. As when in France shouldst do as the French, shall split the di’france, shake well and:

BALT 23 kc 3 (Succop misses 1 other fg try)

Good find on Runyan ILChiefsFan. Pioli is very much in tune with the old sales/marketing mantra of ‘under-promise/OVER-deliver’. That’s smart business and apt for this 2009 team.

Dog do you have any idea how bad Chiefs Fans want a win?????? Just so you can choke on your own bile comments !!!! I hope for us you have a living will .PnS

  • September 8, 2009  - BinSC says:

I would expect Pioli to be checking on anyone who appears able to protect Cassel. Runyan probably won’t pan out, but good to know none of the rocks will go unturned.

  • September 8, 2009  - Rin Tin Tin says:

    “There is no other option.”

    - sure there is … there’s always DET- now that Rin has seen you (lose all 4 games), you do bear a striking resemblance to Matt Millen…

“Losing close to 800 pounds is not pleasant, it’s not easy” Haley said.”

    - but I feel so much better now … I gotten fat and sassy from packing on the accolades (as well the enchiladas) Arizona a football sense…really needed the reality ‘check’ this 0-4 disaster I’ve wrought here in Kaycee has brought; can certainly see how hoggish on myself I’d become when I came here (thx BW for the attitude adjustment – mine.)
Too, my digestion’s easier so I can scream longer and louder at the players now.

“At the end of this, we are going to be a mentally tough team.”

    - though not a winning one – I’ve merely whetted the appetites a starving Chiefsfandumb nation by going 0-4 … but you ain’t seen NOTHIN’ YET!

“Every one of these 53 that end up playing for us will be a mentally tough group. If you are mentally tough, you are physically tough; they go hand in hand.”

    - he keeps referring to being ‘mental’… leading by example, appears.

“They will be a smart group and will be a well-conditioned group. That we know will give us the best chance to win week in and week out.”

    - and as we need all the help we can get overcome my ‘coaching’ as you can see from my work the WRs this training camp, well…

“Both Pioli and Haley thanked the crowd and”

    - double-’checked’ once more their body armor as HAZMAT suits, made the terk back Stadium way…

“the winless pre-season did not go unnoticed by daughters and classmates.”

    - dang smartmouths- there’s not enough discipline in school nowadays, huh They needs to run some laps I tells ya, some laps!

“Pioli told a story about his six-year old daughter and a boy who sits next to her and has been teasing her about the Chiefs winless pre-season.”

    - he was probably Class Valedictorian… or least the teacher’s pet (psst! ’search’ – hate to break this to you but, the teacher is a RADUHS fan!)

“I promised my wife I wouldn’t give this kid’s name up he said. “So we need to get a little winning done here to get the heat off my daughter and he takes it easy on her. But I do know where he lives and I know his parents” Pioli added.

    - stop your lying – Rin’s father who art is in Heaven…

Howe’er, Rin is being very well compen$ated by way side aches – only choking mine done BBQ via my own device … a happy, contented dog be Rin!

Runyan is just too old and broken down. I’d go after Langston Walker, who the Billd just released toady, if we’re going to go after an older RT.

  • September 8, 2009  - Todd Haley says:

Does Rin Tin Tin work for a living or just comment on this forum?

  • September 8, 2009  - Scott Pioli says:

Rin, please have your son stop teasing my daughter!

  • September 8, 2009  - Michael says:

I don’t know, I guess Walker might be worth a look. If he’s medically cleared to play, Runyan could still be a very good run-blocker, maybe average pass-blocking. I think they’d like someone like Runyan to compete with O’Callaghan and start whoever looks better. Just wonder if that means they want to move Nduke to guard to compete with Goff. Alleman is already there, but he may be there to push Niswanger.

In any case, leave no stones unturned and keep providing competition. That can only go in a positive direction.

  • September 8, 2009  - cid says:

If only Alleman could take the job from Niswanger. That guy is not a good center. Ndukwe seems more like a OG than an OT and Goff hasn’t been very good so far. As far as Runyan goes, I can’t imagine he has anything left and I’m in agreement with Mark. Langston Walker is probably a better option at this point. I’m hoping O’Callaghan is the future at RT. He’s huge and carries the weight very well.

  • September 8, 2009  - ED says:

Runyan wouldn’t be a bad pick up if he’s got something left in the tank. I think this team is going to surprise alot of people this year. Every where i’m hearing 4 and 12 and 5 and 11. I think if we can go 3 and 4 in the first half of the schedule we can win about 6 to 8 more games during the second half of the schedule. It gets much easier with games against Broncos, Raiders, Bengals, Browns, Jags, etc. We’re not the long shot most people think we are.

You are no Chiefs fan. You’re just an antagonist here trying to piss people off. Nothing more. Say whatever you want…but let’s call a spade a spade, huh?

    Prediction for Sunday:

We kick three field goals…and score a TD, on Defense.

Our D plays tough…and holds the Ravens to a pair of field goals and a TD.

Chiefs 16 – Ravens 13…and we SHOCK the football world with the upset of the year!!!

  • September 8, 2009  - Bakjon says:

    Scott:

I almost agree with you but the score will be KC 20 Balt 13. LJ scores TD rushing and Cassell throws a TD. Defense stifles Ravens running game and Flacco. Ravens lately have poor seasons after making playoffs; also Rolle will be out for the game so if the line can hold up we may be able to make some plays.

Rin how did the crow taste? honestly it was the easiest ive ever served. a 6th round draft pick with 4.2 speed on a team that lacks big plays and a return game? sorry but changing your mind a week ago doesnt change anything…you were on every lawrence drop, every time he was yelled at and I said its motivation, its coaching, its making a player better. When they started having issues catching punts I said its the Colquitt spin…hes young, out of a small school. But you are proving to be certainly no chiefs fan…Ive yet to meet a chief fan that doesnt embrace their new players…

As for this weekend, prediction: if Cassel plays, Baltimore wins 20-17…if he doesnt, baltimore wins 27-9…so I am giving Cassel a 15 point swing if he plays…lets see if he does(im going with YES)….either way, I dont see a win…but all we need to see is progress

a loss is still a loss…but last year, games almost went like clockwork, when they didnt you could predict how they would go…when we jumped up on tampa, and san diego, it was obvious that it was to be short lived…that stuff is long gone…we need to see a steady full game performance…not one half of good football, and one half of preseason football allowing lendale white to go 80 yards. Why? Yes Rin, They RAN, they ran off 800 pounds…So now they can actually play well in the 2nd half….and now actually have the coaches to make the adjustments at halftime to win games. Not to mention, all these “herm” players that are left, seem to fit better in their new roles….just sayin…and all that were cut, cant find a home after being cut by their first option after KC…shocker? no

It’s weird how Rin sees acknowledgment of his posts as a victory – but he deliberately seeks out attention with his bitter posts and style. Almost like a childhood bully basking in negative attention or something..

I hope the chiefs do pick up Runyan, that would be a great pickup for them like I have stated before since they are going for the veteran types, I believe he does have something left…

The only reason the eagles let him go was because he got injured at the end of the year last year and he is getting paid a good amount of money…
