Items of note

Cleveland – announced that Thaddeus Lewis will start at quarterback for the Browns against Pittsburgh.

New Orleans – the Saints and currently suspended head coach Sean Payton have agreed to a new 5-year contract extension.

Oakland – the Raiders will start Terrelle Pryor at quarterback on Sunday against San Diego, rather than Matt Leinart.


The NFL handed out fines this week to:

Baltimore S Ed Reed, $55,000 for his illegal hit against the N.Y. Giants last week.

Baltimore OT Michael Oher, $10,000 for a chop block against the N.Y. Giants last week.

Carolina QB Cam Newton, $21,000 for bumping a game official last week against Oakland; fined him another $10,000 for kicking a Raiders player.

Carolina DE Greg Hardy, $25,000 for an excessive hit in last week’s game.

Carolina S Charles Godfrey, $21,000 for hitting a defenseless receiver in the head.

Houston CB Kareem Jackson, $21,000 for a hit on a Vikings WR last week and $5,250 for wearing his socks too high in violation of NFL uniform regulations.

New England DT Vince Wilfork, $30,000 for unnecessary roughness for hitting a Jacksonville player in the head last week.


Buffalo – promoted WR Kevin Elliott from the practice squad.

Chicago – promoted RB Harvey Unga from the practice squad; released DE Cheta Ozougwu.

Cincinnati – placed K Mike Nugent (calf) on the injured-reserve list; promoted DB Chris Lewis-Harris from the practice squad

Green Bay – released RB Johnny White.

Jacksonville – placed RB Maurice Jones-Drew (foot) on the injured-reserve list; signed DT Jerome Long off the Chiefs practice squad.

New Orleans – placed RB Pierre Thomas (knee) on the injured-reserve list; promoted DB A.J. Davis from the practice squad.

N.Y. Jets – promoted RB John Griffin from the practice squad.

Oakland – placed CB Phillip Adams (concussion) on the injured-reserve list; promoted DE Brandon Bair and S Corey Nelms from the practice squad.

Pittsburgh – placed OT Mike Adams (ankle), DB Curtis Brown (ankle) and WR Mike Wallace (hip) on the injured-reserve list; promoted WR David Gilreath, NT Alameda Ta’amu from the practice squad.

San Francisco – placed WR Mario Manningham (knee) on the injured-reserve list; promoted DE Tony Jerod-Eddie from the practice squad

Seattle – signed WR Deon Butler; promoted LB Allen Bradford from the practice squad; released DT Hebron Fangupo, DB Ron Parker.

Tennessee – placed LB Colin McCarthy (concussion) on the injured-reserve list; promoted RB Collin Mooney from the practice squad;
