Let’s hope he’s not the second coming of justin medlock
Overall not impressed at all with this draft.. other than the RB we picked up, but chances are he’ll either never contribute or become a star.
Is this kicker a candidate to be a kick off specialist? He’s a big guy and more than a third of his kick-offs were touch backs. He’ll be competition and can be a back up punter.
Out of the area for most of the draft, so I thought it might be illuminating what a outside view of the KC Chiefs. Before the draft they really laughed about the Tony/Atlanta trade. Basically, the Chiefs “gave him away” and wondered what the Atlanta GM “had” on Pioli. They felt it might be 5 years before we will know if the Chiefs manage to get even on the deal. They felt the first pick was a reach. After that every time the Chiefs were mentioned, they changed the subject to Denver and Oakland. the last comment I recall was that “if” the Chiefs have a plan it has nothing to do with the 09 season and it “looked like Pioli was looking for the 2012 season”.
Well the draft is over but feel we really missed the boat by ignoring Center. We have a huge part of the Cap invested in the D-Line, hope it works out. After that it looks like the draft was all about Special Teams play. Got to be a bit disappointed, no excitement with these kids.
Oh, and fire Pioli and Haley.
Did not say that but I see no reason to have to wait 4 or more years for a competitive team….. so why not, the NFL no longer waits that many years to reverse fortunes.
Totally knew it was going to be a kicker, didnt know which one, if he does hit, then he has the most successful mr irrelevant if hes a 10 year kicker.
I have watched Succup for 4 years here in SC. I was hoping they would draft or sign him. He can flat out kick and pressure doesn’t faze him. He will be anything but “irrelevant”. Great way to NOT waste the last pick.
tm1946 – fire Pioli and Haley? Good call. One draft. He is building for 2012 because some yahoo says so? Okay. Pay attention to the next 2 months. They will fill in what they didn’t get in the draft with free agents (both rookies and veterans). I wouldn’t be surprised to see a trade either. Judge the roster in July.
a kicker is most defenetly irrelevent
What did you people expect? Right now this is just a collection of names. Most of these players will be special teamers. This is the M.O. of a Pioli/Belichek draft. One or two of these guys will be starters and the rest will be role players or looking for jobs at the end of training camp. Last year everyone thinks we won the draft. Some of you all will never be happy.
Bob,
Somebody posted under my name in an earlier post and I think a lot of the other posts that have shown up today are not from the people attributed.
Overall, I agree with B in SC who is talking sense. Personally, I’m still not at all excited about this group of players they drafted, but I’m willing to wait and see how they do before getting too upset. Still frustrated they didn’t try harder to get out of pick 3, but what’s done is done. Glad B in SC saw Succop play and likes what he’s seen. Barth was okay last year but definitely needs competition in camp. Succop may be a very “relevant” player if he makes the team.
Hopefully they’ll sign some solid rookie free agents, add another cheap veteran or two, and maybe make another trade. There’s still plenty of time to make the team better.
Byzkit,
I agree. I think it’s way too early to put the bandwagon in reverse. We’re not done shaping the team and the players drafted were based on where we want to go and not for PR value.
Armchair GM’S just crack me up. Guess there’s a reason your on the outside looking in. “byzkit” you hit the nail on the head!! Nice to read a post of someone of gets it….
The Chiefs haven’t drafted a decent kicker since 1967 and Jan Stenerud. The odds and football Gods have to be working in their favor with Suckup don’t they?
No kidding. Some sanity at last. well said, John from FF and Diginjazz. Everyone needs to chill and remember that all our young guys from last year will be much better this year, just because of the experience. That includes Brendan Albert and Rudy Neiswanger. We’re a LOOOONG way from September.
John, regarding the falsly attributed posts, I think Rin is trying to make it seem like there’s a lot more unreasonableness out there than there really is.
John FF,
I’ve gotten the same feeling on the last few threads. Everything today (so far), that has my name on it, but, some replies sure seam out-of-character.
Oops,
meant to say …my name on it, is mine..
Bob,
You seriously need to set up a system that would allow us to register a user name here. Sometimes, posters do funny things like signing off as a player or coach or something and it’s good for a laugh, but if people are being misrepresented, then something should be done.
There’s a lot of good, regular posters on this site, and I think there’s a lot of mutual respect amongst us even if we don’t always, or often, agree. I think most, if not all, of us would like a user name system of some sort. Free to register complete with automatic email updates on new articles. Something along those lines.
Make it happen Bob! It would be awesome!
Rin, the ONLY Herm supporter left, is trying to besmirch the names of rational posters who are relieved Pioli and Haley are now here to clean up Herm’s mess.
They tried to trade out of 3, but if there are no takers, you take your board, and that’s what they did. Jackson was BY FAR, the best 5 technique DE in this draft. 3rd round again took a big, versitlie DE/DT to fix the Hali/McBride picks.
They signed about 4 FA LB’s, and are moving Hali and McBride back there to try to salvage them. The D Line was the area of biggest need, and they addressed it as best they could.
4th Round projectible athlete at CB to add to the only thing Herm did right, if indeed he did, the CB’s. 5th Round a big RT to hopefully make up for Herm’s folly, Barry Richardson. 6th Round Blazing fast WR/Returner to make up for another Herm bust, the slow K-Rob. 7th round RB to replace yet another Herm bust, Kolby Smith, another TE/FB to add to the mix, and a kicker to compete with Barth. I’m not sure I see what, if anything is wrong with this draft. But I have far more confidence in Pioli making the picks then the previous clown.
New subject: Anyone heard of Chiefs signing any free agents. A number of Big 12 was signing but the Chiefs (Ole Carl) shied away from local schools. I am still looking for O line help. Thought MU OT was a good draft pick up looking him up two sites say he is a project not ready to start any time soon. That is OK line have a long lifespan if they make it.
I look forward to the new season, Altho I have no illusions of grandeur, I do feel like their is a direction now. I haven’t felt that way since Marty.
Last season I felt like the Biblical Israelite’s, lost in the wilderness.
It is going to be a big challenge for this team to make this transition to a 34, or, as is the new hip phrase “hybrid” defense, a metaphor for caught in transition. If this were basketball, the Chiefs would be called for an illegal defense.
But, at the very least Pioli and Haley have a vision, That’s a huge improvement over the last few years.
Not going to lie I was a little disappointed with Tavaris Jackson at first. However, the way I see it now is this was Pioli’s guy. Most likely he wanted to trade down to get him later, I give him credit that when a trade didn’t come through he stuck with his guns and got the guy he wanted. Most of these d-line busts over the past few years were guys all the pundits said we should take. I have to agree probably should wait to pass judgement.
I think people have some unrealistic expectations of Pioli and Hayley. It will take time to change personell and fill gaps in 3-4, and I know Pioli and Hayley don’t believe in rebuilding but I would be shocked if we made it to 8-8 this year. They have done fairly good picking up Lb’s who will retire in a year or two, but I am afraid this will take a lot of time. Look at what our needs will be next year. We will need a linebacker to replace Thomas, the year after someone to replace Vrabel, We will still need a guard, (Brian Waters) a possible center (Niswanger), reciever weapons, and possibly a NT, and another D-end.
I am still hoping something drastic happens to save our o-line for this year and bring in some talent to help Cassel. It’s good to have regime changes but I think it’s slightly unrealistic to think that Pioli and Hayley will come in and turn this mess around in a year or two. We picked the best players that fit our scheme. No team has traded out of the top five since early this decade. Really what do people expect? Pioli is not a miracle worker. He seems like a GM determined to win and who will not accept failure and play it off like it’s part of the plan. For now, good enough for me.
And one more thing, I understand Tyler Thigpen being dissapointed. This guy was put behind the WORST offensive line as a rookie and did very well concerning the circumstances. I have always liked Thigpen and wish that he could have got his chance. His heart was definetely to be the starter for the Chiefs. Kinda bumbed for the guy, however I guess being paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to play a sport should make up for most of it. HE just seems like a true player though and a guy who shoulda got his chance. With our o-line, who knows maybe he will.
This is what the guy said about being a back up behind Matt Cassel.
“”I’m behind him, and all I’m doing is pushing him, making him better. Hopefully me doing that is going to make this team better.”Â
I really think thi sis a guy who cares about being a Chief and really cares about the Chiefs. Way to go Thiggy. In my opinion your the best back up in the league right now. REally how many rookies perform like that with that kind of o line
I’m as bummed for Thiggy as most of us are for Herm. We like him and his passion for the game, but the dude can’t win a game.
Also, there is no way he is even close to being the best back up in the league…in my opinion
Behind, I don’t think Tom Brady would have come into KC last year and won a lot of games. The guy is a rookie from coastal Carolina.
Our O-line was the worst in the league last year evidenced by our least rushing yards and huge pass to sack ratio. the guy came in from Coastal Carolina and considering he had no help from the running game, the o-line, or a whole lot of other weapons besides T-gonz and Bowe the guy did really Rally dang good for a rookie. You are obviously not the best eye for talent, cause that kid has it.
Behind enemy lines we will see if Cassell can win a game this year. Thigpen had games last year where he us winning them and then the Defense let down… Not his fault, Cassell may feel the same pain this year
The reason the chiefs drafted a kicker
IMO chiefs are not happy with Connor Barth or the kicking game in general.
Barth was an upgrade to the losers we had last yr, and his 83% FG was respectable. His longest FG was 45yrds, and he missed an attempt over 50yrds. http://hosted.stats.com/fb/playerstats.asp?id=9219&team=12&page=enc
The problem was kickoffs. In 45 kickoffs, he had only 4 touchbacks (9%). Two thirds of his kickoffs were returned, and the avg starting position (whether it was returned or not) was at the 33rd yard line!! That sucks.
In comparison Oak and Carolina’s kickers landed touchbacks in over 30% of their kicks. Thats a huge field position win, and a tremendous asset for the coverage units. Barth’s TB % was 30th in the league.
Dustin Colquitt (the chiefs punter) played like the chiefs’ MVP because he would win the position battle with his punts. The chiefs need a kicker that can do that too.
That is why the chiefs brought in 2 kickers during voluntary OTA’s before the draft, and that is why the chiefs addressed that concern again during the draft.
A kicker who can win the position battle with consistent touchbacks isn’t “Mr.irrelevant” anymore.
