Morning Practice Update 8/6
From River Falls, Wisconsin
The Chiefs went through more of a mental practice Wednesday morning here in the northwoods, getting ready for the pre-season opener Thursday night in Chicago.
For about 90 minutes under a warm Wisconsin sun the players worked on special teams and situational calls. It’s a chance for the coaches to double check whether the players have been paying attention and whether they can react quickly on the field.
Herm Edwards said that six players will not make the trip to Chicago because of injury: LB Donnie Edwards, DT Glenn Dorsey, LT Branden Albert, RB Kolby Smith, DE Trevor Johnson and WR Kevin Robinson.
As for the quarterback rotation, starter Brodie Croyle will work into the second quarter. He’ll be replaced by veteran Damon Huard and then Tyler Thigpen will likely get most of the second half. Edwards wants Thigpen on the field with the young offensive line because of his mobility.
Larry Johnson will get about 20 to 25 plays and he’ll touch the ball five or six times.
The Chiefs will use the new defensive player communication system, with Pat Thomas and Derrick Johnson being hooked up to hear the defenses from the sideline. Gunther Cunningham will be in the press box and he’ll send the call to secondary coach David Gibbs on the sideline, who will then radio it in. New offensive coordinator Chan Gailey will be in the press box, sending plays down to quarterbacks coach Dick Curl, who will radio them into the quarterback.
The Chiefs will leave River Falls Thursday morning, bus to Minneapolis for the short flight to Chicago. They’ll have a pre-game meal at a Michigan Avenue hotel and then head to Soldier Field to face the Bears.

As always, the key is no injuries!…gosh at this point, no FURTHER injuries…
Im interested to see Herb Taylor at LT, Richardson at RT, definitely want to see TJ Jackson at DT, along with the candidates for 4th/5th corner/reciever….
Also want to see if Burns keeps up his play, and if Croyle can just quiet the critics for a night and fling the ball a few times showing new strength and the ability to sit on the pocket with poise.
Novak/Barth outta be interesting as well…To me it comes down to inside 40, and who can kick off better…Field position is everything!
Man I gotta tell ya, all this football talk has made me hungry! I can’t wait for the game tomorrow night. I’m heating up the grill already.
Yes! Finally a ‘real’ game! Can’t wait.

“Larry Johnson will get about 20 to 25 plays and he’ll touch the ball five or six times.”
So does this mean that the chiefs will pass the ball on 20 of 25 plays? Otherwise I can’t get it to add up.
I want to see if Croyle is still throwing off his back foot. Last year even if there was no one in his face he would throw while leaning backwards. He better not do this. I think I have a pretty good feel for QBing and throwing off your back foot IS NOT a good habit to get into. Your accuracy is cut in half and the ball can sail on you as a result. Croyle will not last the whole season if he thinks he can get away with that. He better be stepping up in that pocket and throwing off his front foot or were going to be seeing someone else very soon I have a feeling.
