Morning Practice Update 7/28
From River Falls, Wisconsin
The pace of this morning’s work here at UW-River Falls was more to the liking of Chiefs head coach. That’s not to say everything was A-OK, but it was a step forward from what Herm Edwards saw on Sunday.
Missing from the practice work were DE Turk McBride (stomach ailment), G Brian Waters (unknown), TE Tony Gonzalez (rest) and WR-KR Kevin Robinson (knee). During the practice, LB Derrick Johnson was suffering from cramps and did not participate over the last hour or so.
Also WR Timon Marshall was released, so the Chiefs have 79 on the roster right now.
Monday morning was another sluggish session for the Chiefs offense. Of the 40 plays of team work, the offense had about 15 positive plays. The offense would go 10 snaps without a positive play, put together three good snaps in five plays, and then go another five or six plays without gaining yardage. Not all of this is because of the Chiefs defense. That unit has looked good at times, but has been inconsistent. Although the offensive playbook is not complicated, there is still a lot of thinking going on with some of the players, as that unit had to re-huddle several times. Every once in awhile the offense hits a play and the potential of what the Chiefs can do becomes obvious.
Defensively, Demorrio Williams has started flashing, making several plays in the team session … safety Jarrad Page came flying and would have had a sack of Brodie Croyle … DaJuan Morgan picked off Damon Huard … Donnie Edwards made a great play on a screen pass to Kolby Smith for what would have been a four-five yard loss … Brandon Flowers had a nice breakup of a pass for Dwayne Bowe … Morgan is really flying around at the line of scrimmage, sometimes making stops behind the line of scrimmage on running plays.
On offense, both Larry Johnson and Kolby Smith had a couple of nice runs … Johnson turned a screen pass from Croyle into a big play … with Gonzalez watching the practice , the Chiefs tight ends struggled.
Kickers Nick Novak and Connor Barth were both 3-for-3 on field goals from 39, 41 and 43 yards.

The offense will struggle initially but I think about midseason this offense will be humming along smoothly. We have to realize this team is a work in progress.
Here is the reality of the current situation. Is the offense struggling, of course it is. Not only is it a new system, but we are very early into Training Camp. So, the Chiefs are in the “walk” phase of training camp and will progress into a “run” phase in a few weeks. New system, new offensive coach and new players are variables that create the reason or the “so what” behind the current struggle on that side of the ball.
Agree…I’m not sure our offense will really settle down and “gel” into the “run” phase until after the first two pre-season games
I also concur with crunchtime. Being only 4 days into camp, with a new offensive system, it is not surprising to read that the unit is struggling somewhat.
I am encouraged to read that it looks like there are flashes of potential. Hopefully they become more regular occurances.
I think the kickers are going to battle it out big time
To read that the offense is struggling isn’t a new thing to read about. It is only 4 days into camp, and just about everything is new so it’s no surprise. They will get better than last year they won’t be contend for top 10 in the league but they won’t be dead last either.
I hope Dorsey starts to step it up, is he not in football shape? How can he get schooled by a guy who wont make the team.(according to WPI)
