Len’s Look 12/19
Our Hall of Fame quarterback Len Dawson joins us for another conversation about all things Chiefs related and you don’t want to miss this one. Len talks about the resignation of Carl Peterson, the Chiefs performance against San Diego last Sunday, the need for the defense to develop a leader of some sorts and what can be accomplished over the last two games.
Enjoy.

Len makes great points about the defense needing a leader. Would love to see this team if Edwards remains the head coach go out there and sign Vilma to come in and be the middle linebacker. I don’t think DJ can play the position. And I also can’t see Peppers or Haynesworth going anywhere this because they are both on teams that are in the playoffs that may make a deep run in the playoffs. Vilma on the other hand is on a team that is out the playoffs like us.
Unfortunately I think we’re going to have to look to the draft to solve our defensive end issues and hopefully Tamba and Turk will take some pride in the offseason to get better. But I think Vilma would be willing to come here and play under Herm again and he’s familiar with the style of defense we’ve got the money to sign him and he’s still a young guy just seems like a perfect fit to me.
Yes yes! As Bob and Len both BOTH affirm, Herm has the backing of Clark Hunt!
Keep up the great work Coach Edwards. ALL of KC too is behind you and we know that you will lead us back to glory very soon now.
AND NOW as THEN and TMORROW TOO, Clark Hunt has RE-affirmed Herm’s The Man!
And TOMORRROW TOO! E’ERMORE EVEN!
Also Beason will be a free agent as well. I know the Panthers couldn’t possibly resign Peppers and Beason so hey I guess when you think about it if we can’t get Vilma. Maybe just maybe we could sign Peppers or Beason. At least we would solve one of the 2 key positions we would need in free agency Peppers as defensive end or Beason at middle linebacker another young guy having a remarkable season.
Interesting program with the centerpiece of the podcast being the statement about Clark Hunt making the final decision on who the Chief’s head coach will be next year. If it’s Herm, okay, but only if the new GM wants him and isn’t strong armed by the owner.
THIS will be the sticking point and next key issue once the new GM is named.
I take that back Beason want be a free agent, but Jordan Gross the right tackle for the Panthers will be. Wouldn’t be a bad pick either though to have him come in and play some right tackle we need some help there too and he’s having a pro-bowl season as well.
Interesting article on NFL.com about the top ten head coaching candidates. Thought some of the Herm haters would like to read it:

It will be interesting to see where some of these guy’s go and how they do.
LOL! Amazing how you heard Bob or Len “affirm herm”, I heard, (as did anyone not block headed) that they and Clark “affirm” the rebuild through the draft, NOTHING about the man himself, in fact they like, anyone else with an IQ above 2 “affirm” it is very unlikely herm survives any new GM.
It’s sad, no, pathetic to see you grovel and grasp at straws just to “affirm” your insistence that herm is/has been an effective head coach.
LOL, Len even stated that it (record 6 and 24) was “EMBERRSING”. I know it’s your ass talkin cuz your head knows better. But you insist on embarrassing yourself, so I’ll assist you in any way I can. After all you make it so easy (Victim)and I the VICTOR!
SO I SAY AGAIN……
Keep up the unproductive work Coach Edwards. ALL of KC is sick of you and we know that you will make excuses and lead us back to 2 and 14 very soon now.
AND NOW, Clark Hunt has RE-affirmed Herm’s The Man On The Hot Seat!
LMAO
DAMN! I LOVE ME SOME ME!!!
heh heh heh

What I heard loud and clear was Len’s disgust at the acceptance of losing that seems to have invaded the team. He made a point of stating that some of these players had to stand up and say “no, this ISN’T acceptable”. A point I agree with very much. I was worried at the beginning of the season that too much was being made of seeing “progress”. Losing has now been incorporated as an expectation. It’s how the Lions became the Lions. Edwards seems to brush off losing as “okay” because he sees progress every game.
Everything’s bigger in Texas – yup, that part of the anatomy too, as well the ‘angst.’ Attention staff! Customer in aisle N needs assistance with laxatives…heh heh heh.
And when you ‘have’ them, you know you really have them.
Herm’s comin’ back!
That’s IT? That’s all you have? Pffftt!
Weak Mind, Weak Response!
“Herm’s comin’ back!”
yup! be here in just a few mins.
Make sure you tell him……

I know a lot of you like Thigpen and the spread. I count myself among you who do. It’s made this unbearable season a little more entertaining, but if Clark’s choice is Scott Pioli, I can see Pioli bringing in the Pats OC McDaniels as our head coach and signing up Matt Cassell to a long term deal to be our QB. Now THAT would be a new direction for the club to take.
Is it one I support? Let’s just say I wouldn’t throw a fit if it happened. All I can say is we have just two weeks of Herm left and then he and his “losing is okay so long as progress is there” attitude will be out the door. Getting rid of Carl was just step one.
Show me a losing program and I will show you a loser. There are no moral victories in football. But with clarks change of GM, there is a future to the franchise that has been missing for the last two years.
Colby, do you really think the Patriot’s will let Cassel go? At this point Brady is damaged goods and may or may not be ready for next year. I can easily see the Pat’s going with Cassel as their starter next year and for many years there after (remember Drew B. the former QB). But getting Brady if he is able to play, wouldn’t be bad as he is a proven winner. If nothing else he could help to train Tyler to be a better QB.
I don’t want Castle here as quarterback he’s another version of Rob Johnson. Take him out of that system and away from Randy Moss and he’s going to be an average ole backup guy not buying Castle. As for Herm accepting losing thats BS. No head coach takes a team to the playoffs 3 out of his first 5 years as a head coach is someone who accepts losing. Its more like being realistic. If anyone on here believed that the 2007 and 2008 Chiefs roster was a playoff roster they don’t know crap about football. When you don’t have all the pieces to be a winning team the next best thing to look for is progress. You don’t go from a losing team to a winner without progress being made.
I guess it is a matter of defining progress. There was progress when then inserted Thigpen and switched to the spread. Since then, there really hasn’t been any. Same problems every game. Some would argue (me included) that a lot of those problems can be connected to coaching issues/decisions. I don’t think anyone would say we have a roster of playoff caliber, but we should be closer to .500 than we are. 5-7 wins and I don’t think there is so much discontent.
As for a QB, I certainly hope that if the next GM, and whoever the coach is, decides Thigpen isn’t the answer, they draft one instead of signing someone else’s backup. Aren’t we tired of that yet?
Merwin says:
“Colby, do you really think the Patriot’s will let Cassel go? ”
Yes I do Merwin. He’s an unrestricted free agent who will want some money and the Pats can’t invest a huge deal in him as well as the money they have locked up in Brady. They drafted Kevin O’Connell in the 3rd round for a reason and he’ll play for them if Brady isn’t ready by week 1. Brady is still one of the three best QBs in football.
ED says:
“I don’t want Castle here as quarterback he’s another version of Rob Johnson. Take him out of that system and away from Randy Moss and he’s going to be an average ole backup guy not buying Castle.”
Actually, Cassel is bigger, faster, and has a strong arm, unlike (I think you mean Brad Johnson, not Rob) who had a noodle arm. Sure Cassel has Moss and Welker in NE, but we have Bowe and Gonzalez here and hopefully another few weapons before the start of next season. I believe he’d thrive just as well here.
“If anyone on here believed that the 2007 and 2008 Chiefs roster was a playoff roster they don’t know crap about football.”
That may be true, but it shouldn’t be okay with the fans for a team to go into the season with an uncompetitive roster, youth movement or not. This is what I mean by excepting losing. Herm does it and there are lots of fans like yourself that are totally fine with the crap product that’s been on the field for the last two years. Do you honestly feel good about our chances of being competitive next year with this staff and these players, plus a few in the draft? If you do then I question how much “crap” you know about football.
B in SC says:
“I don’t think anyone would say we have a roster of playoff caliber, but we should be closer to .500 than we are. 5-7 wins and I don’t think there is so much discontent.”
Absolutely correct B in SC. The team started off 1-7. Okay, attest that to youth and injuries at QB. They overcame the QB issue with the spread, but where is the improvement? They’ve played all these close games but the only one they’ve won is the one Oakland bumbled away. Herm’s clock management has hurt them in a number of these games. So have some of the play calling decisions. So has the fact that this team plays like garbage on BOTH sides of the ball in the 3rd quarter after they spend 15 minutes in the locker room with Herm. (Probably absorbing too much loser aura) That’s why he can’t be viewed as a coach who deserves to finish this rebuilding thing. Herm was right in wanting to rebuild the roster, he just isn’t the guy who should be doing it.
“As for a QB, I certainly hope that if the next GM, and whoever the coach is, decides Thigpen isn’t the answer, they draft one instead of signing someone else’s backup. Aren’t we tired of that yet?”
Just speculation on my part with this whole Cassel thing. Only two QBs right now look like 1st round guys, Stafford and Bradford. They are both underclassmen. If only one comes out, Detroit most certainly will take whichever one it is and then we’ll be stuck with Thigpen. If they both come out and one falls to where ever our pick is, he’s still just the second best in the draft, the guy Detroit passed on. Is that a bad thing? Maybe not. You know me, I’m a supporter of spending 1st round picks on QBs who seem to have elite potential because it’s the most important player on the team. For Thigpen to be successful, we’d almost have to stay in the spread and that may not be the wisest decision to make in the long term. We would control our own destiny by getting a QB in free agency. Hindsight being 20/20, we probably should have brought in Chad Pennington, but hey, who needs a good, proven QB anyway? We all knew this team was going nowhere under this regime. Herm was just getting his excuses all lined up.
I think ED meant Rob Johnson. He played for Spurrier at Florida, was hyped big, and went on to be a bust…for Buffalo I believe.
An underclassman would be fine. We should be drafting a guy to develop anyway. Thigpen could still be the QB for the next year or two. If he progresses, you could always trade someone later. This is what we haven’t done in the past. Look at the discussion about signing someone else’s QB. They took the time to draft and develop one. We need to do the same.
Colby I’m willing to bet you some big time bucks that Cassell does not prove he’s a starting quarterback in this league. Cassell is the product of a great team in New England and great coaching nothing more nothing less. The guy isn’t the next Tom Brady by no means and he isn’t the next Romo or anything like that. When someone like the 49ers or Lions pick him up next year you’re going to look like an idiot for even buying into a one year hit on a very good football team and a very good system they have in New England.
As for my comments about the team excepting losing. Its not all on Herm. Some of the blame for the 2007 roster was on Peterson if not most of it. It was Peterson who was to stubborn to rebuild then and wanted to carry the same roster from 2006 into 2007 and not just tear the roster down and rebuild then. Now as for 2008 like Herm said the plan was to go out there and try to win with young guys. Whether we had enough vets to win really didn’t matter because it was a sacrifice in building a base for the future something this team didn’t have when Herm came here. No youth on offense or defense.
That being said looking out our team we’re not that far away from being a winning team. A solid pass rusher and a midlle linebacker on defense. I definately think match that with our secondary and will be a top 15 defense next year. Offensively right tackle and guard. Bring back Larry and Tony we should be a top offense next year that actually can run the ball in goal-line. Give Tyler some work in the offseason to improve out of a conventional offense and yeah I definately think we can turn this team around and win the weak AFC west next year. We’ve proved with the lack of personel missing on this team we can be competitive against good teams now if we just solve our personel issues we can beat those same teams.
I said the same thing about my second favorite team the Falcons and everyone on the blogs there laughed at me and said I was crazy, but I told them we get a quarterback, running back, and an improved offensive line and this team can be a winner in 2 years.
Obviously I look alot right alot sooner than I thought, because know one expected Ryan to play like this in his rookie season and know one expected Micheal Turner to be this good. But I did know once we solved those issues in ATlanta we would be a winning team. Now as for my favorite team the Chiefs I feel if we address those 4 key positions in the offseason the turnaround here in KC want surprise me either next year so lets just stay tuned.
Keep up the great work Coach Edwards. ALL of KC too is behind you and we know that you will lead us back to glory very soon now.

Colby, don’t get me wrong, I would really like to see Cassel as the starter with Thigpen and Gray as the backups next year. I was just thinking the Pat’s would do with Brady as the did with his predecessor, Drew B. I would prefer to get a good proven QB and spend the draft picks on another good OT and OG for the right side. As well as a good middle LB, and a OLB to complement DJ. Just my opinion.
