Inside The First Meeting of Camp
From River Falls, WisconsinÂ
The Chiefs arrived on the UW-River Falls campus late Thursday afternoon. They picked up their room keys, handled personnel items, had their first meal of training camp and promptly at 7:15 p.m. had their first team meeting of the season.Â
The head coach allowed us to sit in.Â
There were several messages Herm Edwards wanted to deliver to this team.
Here’s my column on kcchiefs.com about the most important element Edwards wanted his players to carry out of the meeting.Â
Here are a few more observations and thoughts on the meeting that lasted approximately 30 minutes.Â
When Edwards walked into the theater in the University Center at 7:12 p.m., he was the last man in the room. Every player, coach and support staffer was already in place. When he stepped on the small stage at the front of the room, his audience immediately grew quiet. This bunch was ready to get started.Â
Chiefs GM Carl Peterson spoke first. In his brief remarks he reminded the players that while they were visitors in River Falls they were representing the Hunt family and the Chiefs organization.  Next was head trainer David Price, who reminded the players of treatment and training room policies.Â
Then it was the head coach’s turn. He handled some housekeeping items (no bikes in the dorm.) He spent several minutes showing his team a list of NFL players who had run into trouble over the last month. Edwards reminded them of their responsibilities and told them the Commissioner was wielding a heavy stick when it came to bad off-field behavior.Â
Through it all, there were no players falling asleep, no conversation in the audience. Assistant coaches sat at the back of the room. Players were to the front. Support staff stood against the back wall. Using an overhead projector, Edwards began the 2008 season by talking about the 2007 season and the major reasons the team suffered through its 4-12 record. He felt it was important that the returning players understood very clearly where they failed. He also felt it was very important that the new players understood the reasons last season happened and why they would not be repeated again this year.Â
One of the things that Edwards always talks about with his players is mental toughness. In several different ways verbally and visually, he drove his point home to this year’s group. The most obvious was the team’s poor second half play. Here’s a visual that he placed on the overhead to prove his point.

His most memorable quote summarized the problems of last year and the goal for this training camp:Â
“We start changing that now, right here, in training camp. It’s not something you suddenly pull out in the fourth quarter of a game in November. It means taking personal responsibility right now, with every practice and every meeting. It’s not about physical talent in this league, it’s about what’s up here (he pointed to his head.) It’s about knowing the situation, knowing that it’s time to make a play to win the game and knowing how to make that play happen.Â
“You can’t just show up. You have to do more. We will do more, because I can tell you this, I’m not putting up with a season like last year again. I’m all out of ‘tried hard’ speeches. I don’t want to do any more of those.”Â
With that, he sent the coaches and players out the door and into offensive and defensive meetings. Â
The 2008 season had begun.

The gap between being in the playoffs and being 4-12 in the NFL is so small. 1/2 way through the year we were in 1st place ahead of everyone’s favorite team the Chargers with a win in their building. Then the slide began and there was no ending it. If we could slide from 1st place to last that quickly last year it seems like we could rise back to first place just as quickly. Football is a game for young bodies and I personally think our youth will help drive that turnaround much more than it hurts.
Thanks for the updates Mr. Gretz. This is great having another first hand account of camp.
I look forward to reading your site.

Hopefully our young CB’s are as good as advertised. I must say starting 2 rookies at such a volitle position does scare me a bit. I’m looking forward to hearing how they do this year in camp!
Gretz…you are the best. This info is gold…no one else has any of this. Keep up the great work. I’m subscribing right now…
Ditto!
I really feel the chiefs can make a push to the top of the AFC west. The fact that Edwards is talking about last year’s record in the first meeting of training camp is a good thing. It was really frustrating for us the fans to see so many close games that could have gone our way.The fact that we have a lot of young guys really could be a blessing,we need a attitude adjustment on both sides of the ball, and these kids might just be the answer to our problems.Thank you Mr. Gretz for your insightful articles, makes me feel like I’m there in training camp as well.Believe in now. Go chiefs!
Thanks Gretz for your new website. I enjoy your articles on the Chiefs site but now it’s great to see your own place. I’m anxious to read what you will see up at River Falls. I like these draft picks, but it all comes down to Brody. Go Chiefs!
Okay, a friend turned me on to your site this morning. I feel like I’ve been missing out. Reading this story was almost like being inside the meeting. What a source of inside information.
This is proof the idiots at 101 the Fox have no clue what they are doing. The Chiefs Radio Network has lost thier most talanted and value resource for exclusive information. Turn down the fox and READ!
FYI, some of the scores in the table are hard to digest because the order isn’t consistent (e.g. sometimes the chiefs points are first, some times they’re second).
Anyway, thanks for the insight to the locker room! Just wanted to pass that little nugget of constructive criticism along.
I don’t always agree with you gretz – But rocker’s right about you getting the job done.
BTW – thx for the RSS feeds!
Very nice work Bob. You have the best Chiefs site on the web right now.
Bob I’m a huge Kendall Gammons fan because I went to PSU with him but I’m going to miss your commentary from the sidelines during the game.
Us too Bob! We met you and your producer once in Denver. It was great moment for my wife and I. You were both so gracious and kind. When I heard the news, I was heartbroken. I’m so glad you are back. I don’t know much about podcast, but I’m going to find out how we can hear you again.
Thanks for the site. We’ll be fans forever.
WOW!
I don’t know how to keep this praise to a minimum. I looked for your columns on KCchiefs.com everyday, several times daily. I’m ecstatic that you now have your own site. I will read your words of wisdom and expertise on football daily.
Go Chiefs…Go Chiefs…Go Chiefs
