In the 5th Round It’s QB & LB

With the first of their two picks in the fifth round on Saturday afternoon, the Chiefs selected University of Iowa quarterback Ricky Stanzi with the 135th choice.

Five choices later at No. 140, they drafted OLB/DE Gabe Miller from Oregon State.

A 6-4¼, 223-pound native of Ohio, Stanzi was a three-year starter for the Hawkeyes, posting a 26-9 record as Iowa’s starting quarterback. He’s been one of the Iowa captains for the last two seasons. Stanzi threw for 3,004 yards, with 25 TDs and six interceptions last season.

“You have to be your biggest critic, and the best way to improve is to focus on improvement,” Stanzi said at the Senior Bowl back in January. “That’s the only thing you can do: find the things you’re doing wrong, be very critical of yourself, and then go out and try to improve those things.”

Miller began his college career at Oregon State as a tight end, playing two seasons at that spot for the Beavers. He moved to the defense for the 2009 season.

He’s 6-3, 250 pounds and was timed in his March Pro Day workout in Corvalis at 4.62 in the 40-yard dash, but more impressively 1.56 over 10 yards. Coming out of Lake Oswego, Oregon and going to Oregon State, Miller twice tore his right Achilles tendon.

Miller tore the same Achilles twice?!?
Stanzi is a weak-armed, big mouth, pothead.
Looks like 2 wasted picks :-(

Do you have anything to backup your accusations concerning Stanzi?

Let give it time before we judge. I love our chiefs and support of what they do, because right now nobody know how it turn out. Going for big name doesnt alway meant it will turn out great.

This is the first I’ve heard any of this about Stanzi. He was projected as a possible late 2nd rounder. I’ll be interested if any of this proves to be true.

Stanzi good solid backup could 4 to 5 yrs dwn the road replace Cassel if he continues to develop as QB.

Weak armed is a criticism that could be argued with proper supporting documentation. big mouth pothead? That’s like saying someone is a dumb a**, loud mouthed poster without any supporting evidence. The choices so far seem on the mark and based on need with decent chances for success. if we end up with a couple contributing starters and decent back ups it will be a successful draft.

Don’t get too hung up on Miller’s two Achilles tendon breaks; that was in his high school days. Evidently the Chiefs doctors see no continuing problems.

I’ve been away for a while, but, It’s good to see guys like johnfromfairfax still around to show some commen sense.

I wish Bob had pointed out that Miller’s Achilles was in HS.
Iowa AD Barta admitted their drug testing program was flawed back in January. He admitted as many as 21 players cheated the test. That’s a documented fact. Iowa has the 2nd most convicted FB players in D1 according to SI. The rest I heard 3rd hand from a source I trust.

    Hekko stanzi, buh bye palko.

Croyle to start, ca$$el to battle stanzi for backup & third string.

Oh great, HermsTheMan/Rin Tin Tin is back, that’s just what we needed. Must of killed you last season watching the Chiefs win the division and make it to post season play.

This was yet another good graft by Pioli, the Chiefs are on the rise!
