In Sixth Round Chiefs Select Texas A&M RB

From the Truman Sports Complex

In the sixth round, the Chiefs reached down into the Longhorn State and grabbed RB Cyrus Gray of Texas A&M.

The 5-10 ¼, 206-pound Gray is a Texas native and brings a combination of speed and power to the Chiefs offense. He was timed at 4.47 in the 40-yard dash and did 21 reps at 225 pounds on the bench press.

In four seasons at College Station, Gray played in 49 games with 24 starts. He ran 632 times for 3,298 yards and 30 TDs. He caught 103 passes for 776 yards and 6 TDs. He had back-to-back seasons with more than 1,000 rushing yards, gaining 1,133 in 2010 and 1,045 in 2011. He scored a dozen touchdowns in each season.

Over his career at Texas A&M and DeSoto High School, Gray played many different spots, working at quarterback, slot receiver, fullback and he was also one of the better Texas schoolboy kickoff returners.

Here’s a more complete profile that we ran several weeks ago.

I just can’t believe Gray was still there in the 6th! This guy is really good. I saw him run for 127 yards in Ames and can catch passes well too.

Pioli/Crennel have addressed every need this off-season. Just fantastic!

NFL Network just said some great things about our draft and roster. Billick and Mayock both saying injuries were to blame for 2011. They said “the ship fell over on Matt Cassel. You can’t lay any of that on him.” They also said that if he returns to his “08 and ’10 form we are a Playoff team.

Glass half empty crowd and Bobson Gretlock… take that :)

I agree. No way did I think Gray would still be there. I thought he would go in round 3 or 4. He has serious speed, J Charles kind of speed, and he can catch the ball. Charles, Hillis, McCluster, Gray, even Draughn. Just have to figure out who the fullback is going to be, or if they will carry one. Battle is still available. They have Bannon. We’ll see.

Well…maybe Gray isn’t JC fast, but he is fast, and he’s got good size to go with it. I’m excited the Chiefs got him.

I did not heard what you did on the NFL Network, guess our tv did not get the same broadcast. I do recall almost anyone commenting on the Chiefs say the team will sink or swim (my words) on Cassels ability. Maybe your glass is not half full but a bit cracked.

Did find one thing Bellick said it was strange that KC was a more complete team but Manning ignorred them, suggested there was no interest by either (wonder if that goes to the Condon/Pioli feud that is supposedly going on).

I think Cyrus Gray could wind up being a big contributor right away. A three back rotation of Charles, Hillis and Gray may really wear down defenses in the second half.
