Herm is Gone

The Chiefs have fired head coach Herm Edwards.

He was relieved after three seasons as the man in charge of the team.  He finished with a 15-34 record, including a loss in the playoffs after the 2006 season to the Indianapolis Colts.

“On behalf of my family, I want to thank Herm for his service to the Chiefs,” Chiefs Chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement released by the team late Friday afternoon.  “After careful deliberation over the last week, Scott and I decided that it was in the best interests of the Chiefs to move forward in a different direction.  This was not an easy decision. Herm is an outstanding football coach and a man of integrity. We appreciate his leadership over the past three seasons, and we wish him all the best in the future.”

Said Pioli in the team statement:  “Since my arrival last week, Herm and I have had several conversations as part of my overall evaluation of the football operation. After careful consideration, Clark and I felt that it was best to make a change.  What I conveyed last week in the press conference I still believe to be true – Herm is a great man and a tremendous football coach. He respects the game and the league, and he is passionate about his players and his craft.  Over the course of this last week, I have also spent time meeting and visiting with most of the assistant coaches, and I will continue to do so over the next several days. All of the coaches from last year’s staff, with the exception of one, are under contract through the 2009 season.”

The Chiefs went 9-7, 4-12 and 2-14 in his three seasons.  In the past year, he pushed the franchise towards a rebuiding effort with young players, particularly a dozen draft choices selected by the team in the 2008 NFL Draft. But he obviously paid the price for that strategy with the team’s poor performance on the field.  Edwards thought he had the full support of Hunt in going young.

No word yet as to who will be Edwards’ replacement, or the status of the remaining members of the 2008 coaching staff.  Three of those assistant coaches have already found other employment: defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham (Detroit), special teams coach Mike Priefer (Denver) and secondary coach David Gibbs (Houston).

Edwards was named the tenth head coach in Chiefs history on Janury 9, 2006, replacing Dick Vermeil, the man he played for at defensive back with the Philadelphia Eagles.  He signed a four-year contract that was to expire at the end of the 2009 season.

He spent five seasons with the New York Jets as head coach, finishing with a 41-44 record, including three trips to the playoffs.

Overall, Edwards has a 56-78 record as an NFL head coach.

    Damn the bad luck………

  • January 23, 2009  - Eli says:

I would just like to say thank you to Herm Edwards for being a good, quality person. A good Christian who treated everyone with a lot of respect, and ultimately did the right thing for the team — while hurting his own stock as a coach.

I am a Chiefs fan first and foremost, and am very interested in Herm’s replacement, but think this team will be better in a few years because of everything he’s done.

    And,

    my condolences to Rin.

  • January 23, 2009  - Mark says:

    YES!

The is the second greatest day in modern Chiefs history.

Goodbye, Mr. Gansz, I mean, Edwards. Every day of your reign was better than the next.

Herm needed to be fired. Good man bad coach.

  • January 23, 2009  - RedandGoldRice says:

THANK THE LORD!! LETS GO CHIEFS!!

  • January 23, 2009  - B in SC says:

Could see it coming, but is never a good process. I feel bad for Herm, he is a good person and will land on his feet somewhere. Just not as a head coach. Someone will allow him to be in his element and coach DB’s. He would be an asset there.

With this firing, Pioli obviously knows who he is going to hire. He wouldn’t cut Herm loose if it wasn’t a done deal with someone else, which just shows the fiasco of the Rooney rule.

  • January 23, 2009  - JohnNdallas says:

Now if he would drop his opinion of himself, and go take a D-Coridanator position some where, learn how to be a head coach under someone, he could be back as “the man” some place in the NFL in a few yrs.

No short cuts, pay your dues.

  • January 23, 2009  - RedandGoldRice says:

He’s never been a coordinator. We don’t even know if he can do that. He can scout, and he can identify dbs, and he can give one hell of a sermon after a loss, but thats all thats been established.

I wish him the best, and thank him for his time with the Chiefs getting us started in the right direction (w/o proper coaching) and hope he can make it on with someone else soon. Denver might be looking for some help……

  • January 23, 2009  - TCharlton says:

I agree with Eli. Good guy was Herm. Has some great values, but this was inevitable.

What time is it?….Oh well…no more Herm

And so it is. The re-construction of the new Chiefs has yet another notable brick cast into the rubble.

  • January 23, 2009  - Mark says:

I can’t describe my happiness. The organization has been freed from Carl and Herm.

The Kansas City Chiefs are better off today than they have been in 20 years. This team will now be back, now that the Carl/Herm pall has passed from over this franchise.

Carl should have left with Marty, so this is all cold comfort – housecleaning should have been in 1998 and not 2008. But we finally got it.

The worst general manager and the worst head coach in the NFL are gone.

    What a great day.

  • January 23, 2009  - Vess says:

Thanks for the draft in 08 Herm and you will rebound I think as a defensive coordinator or maybe a college coach. His downfall was his bad choice in keeping Croyle as his starting qb and not going into the free agency and I wish you luck in the future but a good decision on Pioli’s part it was time and now bring on the next coach not Shanahan I do not want Denver’s sloppyseconds bring in new blood for this organization.

  • January 23, 2009  - Alex K says:

The day had to come, glad it was sooner since he is such a good guy. Hope he does well elsewhere…stop complaining about not getting it done earlier, it got done, move on.

    “what a great day”

I never look at the day you fire your head coach as a great day, or not at least the reason for it.. Lets hope the right man is hired…Say all you want about Marty, I think the Chargers regret letting him go after 14-2 even more. If we get a Norv Turner warm body type, its bad news.

  • January 23, 2009  - Mark says:

Alex, this IS a great day.

Ask the people of Paris if the day the allies showed up to liberate them was a great day. That’s how this feels.

The last vestiges of the culture of idiocy at 1 Arrowhead Drive are finally swept away.

    Its Shannahan…yes…..!

  • January 23, 2009  - ED says:

Herm thanks for the draft picks in 2008. Thanks for standing up to Carl and starting the rebuilding process despite his disapproval. If you all had been on the same page we would be having another mediocre season and maybe Bill Kuriach would be the new GM and not Pioli. Too bad you couldn’t just win the close games down the strech last year to preserve your job next year good luck on your next gig.

  • January 23, 2009  - JohnNdallas says:

Where are you guys getting word that its gonna be O’l gooch eye as the new coach?

  • January 23, 2009  - Johnfromfairfax says:

The plan continues to unfold. Perhaps the healing can begin and the rift will close between those who supported Herm blindly and those that recognized him for what he was, a good man but not a good head coach. Clark Hunt made good on his demand that he expected improvement this past year despite the rebuilding process. I think we disagreed about Herm largely over the decency of the man. Clark Hunt got the GM most knowledgeable football insiders say was the best candidate and he and Hunt have decided Herm was not the man. If we are on board with the new direction our Chiefs are headed in we have to trust their judgement until they prove worthy of our trust or not. Either way, Clark Hunt has demonstrated he IS the man and committed to establishing the Chiefs as a premier team in the NFL again. You can’t accuse him of not trying. Rin, wherever the hell you are, raise a glass of foreign booze and salute. It’s 5:51 PM eastern and Herm is the man no longer! Heh! Heh! Heh!

  • January 23, 2009  - RedandGoldRice says:

    John,
Adam Shefter shot down that rumor yesterday. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Just more Donkey crap floating around.

  • January 23, 2009  - rin tin tin says:

As I have maintained throughout this “process”, it was time for a change and a breath of fresh air. YES WE CAN. Let me take this grand moment to reaffirm what I have said all along … Scottie is the man!

  • January 23, 2009  - Blazer383 says:

ESPN is reporting that league sources told Mortensen that the Chiefs are in negotiations with Shanahan. I don’t like the rat-faced SOB, but if he’s the new coach I guess I’ll learn to like him. He is a good coach, and he’ll have a chip on his shoulder when it comes to division games—that’s definitely a good thing.

  • January 23, 2009  - Carlm says:

Rin is on vacation. I will say this its a crock. He should have been allowed to finish and anything anyone else says about Herm there full of it. I blame Carl p and his crap and Gunther for not doing his job. All of you haters got your wish and I feel sorry for you. Not a Hermite. I wanted to see what he could do in his second year of the rebuild. He did what I wanted for the last 10 years. I did not like vermeil because all he wanted was retreads. I got sick of shotty and I hated the 70’s and the 80’s. Now, we will be the Detroit Lions I fear. Probably be back to bringing in retreads that cant play.

  • January 23, 2009  - macgyver says:

I just want to echo the sentiments of Eli about what a fine Christian man Herm is. I believe that if he gets a chance to be a head coach again that he will do a fine job. It probably was time for a new direction, but I am sorry to see him go. If Shanahan’s the guy then best wishes to him and hopefully he can get that running game going again like he did in Denver. I do hope that he hires a good defensive coordinator and the tough D of the Schottenheimer era will be back

  • January 23, 2009  - ScottL says:

    HAHAHA! Finally!

Convenient that good ol’ Rin took a vacation. He knew this day was coming soon.

Clark has now RE-RE-REaffirmed that Herm is a loser and always has been!

Prepare for a season with more wins than Herm’s last 2 combined!

    GO CHIEFS!!!

  • January 23, 2009  - deployed kc fan says:

Carlm—- what will you say when we start at least having hope this season? if we start winning games because of clock management and real coaching will you admit herm was out of his element? i would prefer the marty years over the edwards years(1st 3 vs. 1st 3)

  • January 23, 2009  - Kevin B. says:

Herm is a great Christian guy and personally I believe his efforts were undermined by the trade of Jared Allen. He sacrificed himsel for the good of the team God bless ya Herm

  • January 23, 2009  - Carlm says:

I will be amazed deployed. we are now back to rebuilding again and we will be lucky if the team does anything at all. I have already said Herm was not an in game head coach. But, I also said when it comes to teaching or rebuilding a team he seemed to know what he was doing. I remember the shotty years and they were fun. But, no super bowl and after the first 5 years of disappointment and no offense it turned to angst. The years I don’t want to live over is the 70’s and 80’s and the way its going it looks like it is going to come to that again.

  • January 23, 2009  - JohnNdallas says:

LMAO, “hermites” I love that word, I think it was tm that coined it. Thanks Dude!!!

Carlm, I hate to brake it to you but, the Chiefs have sunk way below any measure of sorry ass that the teams of the 70’s and 80’s were ever able to slump to.

  • January 23, 2009  - Carlm says:

John in your mind only my friend. I remember them years very well and the stink comming from municipal and arrowhead stadium was horrendous. There was no team it was a bunch of has been or had beens that couldn’t play. At the end of last season when they started getting rid of all of those wannabes I got really excited. Now, I am worried. I wish it would have been done 10 years ago now in this state all I can see is the Chiefs going in the way of the 0-16 Lions.

  • January 23, 2009  - JohnNdallas says:

No way man, relax your worries, this was the right thing to do.

And no not in my mind only, look at the record book dude!

  • January 23, 2009  - Carlm says:

I will just have to disagree with you on this. I think we are in for a hard road. Now if things turn out going differently I will jump with joy and celebrate right along with you.

  • January 23, 2009  - JohnNdallas says:

PS I remember those days very well my self. I was playing high school football at that time. I couldn’t find any ones jersy # from the Chiefs I wanted to wear, so I choose 72 Mean Joe Green!!

  • January 23, 2009  - Carlm says:

Me too I loved that jersey my mom burned mine. It got to be pretty bad.

  • January 23, 2009  - kr24 says:

Goodbye Herm. You are a man of integrity. Just not a head coach here at KC. Hope you land on your feet and win elsewhere.

  • January 23, 2009  - findthedr says:

    Bob must be in shock.

    CP is gone
    Herm is gone
    Gun is gone.

Looks like Clark listened, cleaned house, and fired them all!

THANK YOU CLARK HUNT for putting the team back on the road of a respectable orginization.

Message to Herm: Get out of the NFL. It is beyond your ability.

Rin: I’m going to shove this in your face for however long you post here

  • January 23, 2009  - tm1946 says:

Hermites was stolen, not that literate. I got a wild one for you, Chan Gailey for head coach. Why else would the chiefs keep him from interviewing in TB?

  • January 23, 2009  - JohnNdallas says:

tm, I would not be shocked if that were the case, disappointed, but not shocked.

  • January 23, 2009  - tm1946 says:

Being more of a plow horse than a race horse, I have no idea of what is happening. Herm could of been let go 7 days ago, did not happen. 2 def coaches gone, who care? Gailey not allowed to interview with TB, why? Spec teams coach gone, why not?

It just does not make sense. Now I doubt the fans will not have to wait long for a new head coach. Goodness knows who. We will all have to have faith with the Pioli plan, whatever that is.

  • January 23, 2009  - Carlm says:

tm I agree with John. Chan tried to be a head coach and then went back to the college ranks. He is a great offensive coordinator. I think that would be where he should stay. Kind of like Al Saunders and Mike Martz.

  • January 23, 2009  - hawaiian chief says:

Herm mahalo, your are the MAN. You stood up and did what you thought was the right way to go, and you didn’t care what anybody else thought. I admire you for that. You did what I was hoping would happen through out the Vermeil era, draft people based on their film, not on their potential, and played them right away.

I will say I never liked your conservative approach to the game both on offense and defense. Given a strong staff on both sides of the ball, allowing you to motivate and teach I think you could be successful one day.

I can’t say I feel sorry for you (4 million) but I know this year was hard as hell, and you will pick yourself up and dust yourself off and keep on keeping on.

I want a no name young coach that we can build a dynasty with, b/c that is what scott wants a team that can compete year after year.

    Go Chiefs

    1. The Mayflower at the stadium is still loadig all of Herms excuses, for two days now.
    2. When the rumor of the Shanahan dude broke and there was such a quick no no no given. That was a red flag that it is yes yes yes.??????????
    3. I don’t know that I really care what the new coaches name is. I want him to be the kinda guy that gets violently ill when his team loses.(sp)
( We gotta get spell check on this site.) And I want him to instill that in his players. “We don’t lose ” should be their credo(sp)
4.I am not happy that Herm lost his job, I have been fired before, not fun. However he does not deserve to be paid $4mil to fail. period end of story.
    5. The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. Tomorrow we begin our journey to a winning season in 09. Forward………march!!
