Friday Morning Cup O’Chiefs
As the Dallas Cowboys season ended last Sunday with a blowout loss to Philadelphia, Jerry Jones (right) said before the game and afterwards that Wade Phillips was his head coach for the 2009 season.
That was all before Mike Shanahan was available.
There have been no sounds, no rumors, no mention of Jones and Shanahan since the Denver Broncos cut their coach loose on Tuesday afternoon.
But I’ve got to believe that somewhere Jones is pondering whether it’s time to change his mind.
Come on … this is Jerry Jones we are talking about. This is the guy who loves to collect big names. Good or bad, he’ll do just about anything to win and sell tickets. That’s even more important with the new Jerry World Dome nearing completion in Arlington.
Besides Bill Cowher, who would be bigger for Jones than Shanahan? This is a Super Bowl winning coach. This is one of the most successful coaches in the game over the last 20 years. Nobody could believe it when Jones and Bill Parcells got together.
So why should we doubt he would make a play for Shanahan?
Right now, this is the mere figment of my imagination. But stay tuned. This could be reality very quickly.
Now, an update on the other openings around the NFL on what was outwardly at least a fairly quiet New Year’s Day in the league.
CHIEFS – It seems that no matter what goes on between the Cleveland Browns and Scott Pioli, the V.P. of player personnel with the New England Patriots is going to meet with Clark Hunt. That interview may have already taken place. The Chiefs have sought permission to speak with him and sources in the league say it’s going to happen or already has.
BRONCOS – The proverbial league sources say that Denver has been in touch with Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops about replacing Shanahan. Now, Stoops is a little busy right now with a national championship game to play next week, so this story doesn’t figure to get much traction right now. They will interview Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo on Saturday according to various media outlets. They will also meet with new Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Raheem Morris on Monday. They are seeking permission to speak with New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
BROWNS – The Boston Herald reported that Pioli had a Thursday deadline to make a decision on whether he was going to Cleveland. The Cleveland Plain Dealer then reported there was no deadline on a Pioli decision. An interview with Atlanta president Rich McKay was cancelled when the league office pointed out to both parties that the Falcons were still playing football.
JETS – They’ve asked for permission to speak with Browns defensive coordinator Mel Tucker.
RAMS – They have requested permission to speak with Dallas WR Ray Sherman about their heading coaching job.
K-STATE’s JOSH FREEMAN WILL JUMP TO NFL
ESPN.com reported Thursday that Kansas City native and K-State quarterback Josh Freeman has decided to enter the NFL Draft.
“I’ve done all the research,” Freeman told the website. “Kansas State is starting over and this is what I’ve always wanted to do. The time is right.”
Freeman said an NFL advisory committee projects he could be a high second-round pick. But Freeman, 6-6, 245 pounds, could work his way into the first round because of his prototypical size and arm strength.
“I hope to bring leadership and toughness to an NFL team,” Freeman told the site.
The numbers the NFL will look closely at are the 44 career TD passes to 34 interceptions. He threw for just over 8,000 yards in three seasons with the Wildcats. Freeman will turn 21 on January 13th.
FROM THE PAGES OF CHAMPIONSHIP GAME HISTORY
On January 2, 1972, the Dallas Cowboys beat the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game 14-3 at the recently opened Texas Stadium. The Dallas Doomsday Defense led the Cowboys to the victory. The winners’ first TD of the game was set up by an interception by defensive end George Andrie, who picked off QB John Brodie’s screen pass and returned the ball to the San Francisco two-yard line. Two plays later, Dallas had a 7-0 lead that it never relinquished. Later, Roger Staubach led an 80-yard drive that finished up with a touchdown run by RB Duane Thomas. San Francisco’s only score was a 28-yard FG by Bruce Gossett. Brodie threw for just 184 yards and was picked off three times. Staubach threw for a mere 103 yards passing, but added 55 yards on eight runs. Dallas went on to stop Miami 24-3in Super Bowl VI.
FROM THE PAGES OF CHIEFS HISTORY
On January 2, 1983 the Chiefs beat the New York Jets 37-13 in front of a crowd of 11,902 fans at Arrowhead Stadium in the final game of the 1982 season. Because eight weeks of the season were cancelled because of a players strike, the NFL took one week of cancelled games and tacked it on to the end of the season. That’s how the Jets became the season finale. The victory was the third of the season for the Chiefs. It proved to be the final game of the Marv Levy Era as head coach; he was fired several days later.
SAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO …
Born on the second day of 1955 in Key West, Florida was TE Ed Beckman, who played eight seasons with the Chiefs (1977-84), contributing mostly on special teams, but also catching 23 passes over his career for 198 yards and a TD. Beckman also spent two years as a special teams coach on Frank Gansz coaching staff.
On January 2, 1970 LB Glenn Cadrez was born. He spent two of his 11 NFL seasons with the Chiefs (2001-02) playing in 28 games.
Born on January 2, 1927 in Smithers, West Virginia was Hall of Fame DE Gino Marchetti. He played 14 seasons in the league (1953-66) all but the first one for the Baltimore Colts. Marchetti was the NFL’s MVP in 1958.

Well here is the start of under-classmen QB’s coming out for the 2009 NFL draft, could there be more?
Or maybe the question really is, are there any worth a look @ #3 spot?
IMO we need to pick a OT and sure up the O-line for what ever QB we put back there.
Agreed. Freeman would be a good answer in the lower rounds.

should help–
The Shanarat to Dallas makes some sense. Shanny might be given the control he desires; did Parcells have this control, too? Not sure how many other franchises will do that, since it doesn’t seem to work (Coach/GM). I’m assuming that Shanny wants both roles, but I haven’t heard him comment on that.
Any news on what role(s) Shanny desires?
It just seems unlikely to me we’re going to land Pioli if he wants to be President and GM. Hunt has already stated the job will be split in two. He doesn’t want another Peterson type guy. I can understand that. Hopefully if we don’t land Pioli we can get Chris Polian from the Colts. His father built the 90s Bills, the mid 90s Panthers, and now the Colts. I’m sure the kid has learned alot on how to build a football team being around all that knowledge.
No to C. Polian!
Let’s just hope he gets a good one. Comment on herm, coaches all get fired, why not now? Get a jump on the rebuild.
jim lloyd, I tried doing as you suggested, didn’t seem to make any difference, it’s still takes forever to load Bob’s site.
I started having problems a couple days ago, after Bobs site went down.
Any one else having the same problem?
Not until just now. What’s up Bob?
Time check: Friday, January 2, 2009, 10:38 a.m. - and yup, Herm’s STILL The Man!
heh heh heh
Manning MVP again.
Yes to Polian! He too knows that Herm’s The Man!
Yes to the slow load, me too.

I LIVE IN WICHITA AND ITS DOWNLOADING FAST, SORRY NOT TRYING TO BRAG.
JOhn why are you saying no to Polian. How you gone say no to a guy you have no knowledge of his capabilities?
I sure hope Herm doesn’t draft Freeman 1st pick, hopefully a stud DE will be available. Does anybody have some draft knowledge?
Just uncomfortable with nepotism Ed.
The guy maybe ok but he could be just riding Daddy’s shirt tail.
I agree with you Ed, Polian will make a great GM like you said with all the knowledge he absorbs from his father. This guy can come in and bring a new energy to this organization I can see him bringing in a unknown coach possibly from the college ranks or an assistant coach from a successful organization . I would love to see maybe a Jason Garrett or McPherson from New England as the new head coach.
I think Freeman probably will drop to round 2. If he does, he may be a good addition there, but not before we pick up a solid Sam or Mike linebacker. Hopefully by next year B. Richardson will be ready to step in at right tackle. I would like to see the chiefs trade back a few spots & pick up Everette Brown from Florida State. I am more impressed with him than either Orakpo (Texas) or Johnson (Georgia Tech).
The thing you have to keep in mine John is this. Hypothetical situation: its not like Chris is a quarterback and we’re hoping his father who may have been a great quarterback we’re hoping he can produce the same results on the field.
His father was is a great GM. Physical are not always passed down from father to son, but knowledge can be passed down from one person to the next. Thats why I say Chris would be a good hire because hanging around a guy that smart that knowledge has to rub off on him. Especially with Chris being his son. Thats all I’m saying. HIghly intelligent people tend to all hang around each other. I do feel that this kid is a sharp guy just on the basis of him being around his father absorbing all that knowledge about football and how to build a team.
John,
Hate to pile on but mine in Wichita area is loading fine. Quite frankly, I have a crap computer so maybe I’m just used to it.
OK, Thanks, seems to be just this site, so i dunno….
I dunno bout Y’all, but that pic of the “Rubber Band Man” on this thread is disturbing to me.
Don’t really care who Clark hires as a GM, I would just hope he wouldn’t hire someone based on what their father accomplished. Hopefully, his pick will be base on their own merits and a proven track record. Not saying Polian doesn’t have a good record, I don’t really know, but his dad shouldn’t be any sort of factor. I get the feeling he will make a very good decision. I like the fact that the Chiefs search is no where in the national news. Everything is being done out of the papers unlike Cleveland and Denver. I think that says a lot about Clark Hunt.
Hey JND are you refering to the best plastic surgery money can buy? Yes that is disturbing. The next few years in Dallas ought to be quite interesting, new stadium that people cant afford to go to in this economy, questionable characthers on the team and so on.

Dave, Yes that’s who I was referring to.
LMAO,when he first had that done, he reminded me of “Edgar” from men in black, if you seen the Movie you’ll know what I’m talking about.
jim,
I’ve tried everything, I’m not sure what the problem is. I’m only having probs with this site.
I don’t want Polian. I’d take someone else from Indy, but not him. I agree, the nepotism isn’t a good thing. Also, any trades with Indy or lack of activity with Indy are open to suspicion, on both ends. A GM’s job is to get the better of other teams. Is a son going to be ruthless enough to do it to his father, and vice versa. Has this situation existed before in the NFL? I’d rather look elsewhere, and let young Polian take over from the elder when the time comes. If Polian is hired, then we know the fix was in, and Clark would only hire a GM that wanted to keep Herm around, which is the worst thing for this team, going forward.
Polian would be an EXCELLENT choice! He knows that Herm’s The Man!
