Draft Slotting With One Week To Go

For fans looking ahead to 2009 – and what else is there to get excited about at this point – the Chiefs have assured themselves no lower than the third pick in the first round of the ‘09 NFL Draft.

Detroit has wrapped up the No. 1 pick with its 0-15 record. That was assured with their defeat this past weekend.

Tied for No. 2 are the Chiefs and St. Louis, both carrying 2-13 records. With a game to play, the Chiefs have the No. 2 spot thanks to a weaker schedule than the Rams. But it’s not by much. The 13 opponents of the Chiefs are 109-85-1, or a .562 winning percentage. The Rams’ opponents are just one game better at 110-84-1, a .562 winning percentage.

The teams share five opponents: New England, Buffalo, the New York Jets, Miami and Atlanta.

So if both teams lose their final games: the Chiefs to Cincinnati and St. Louis to Atlanta, then it will come down to the outcomes of the eight other teams on their schedules.

For the Chiefs it’s the outcome of games played by Denver, Oakland, San Diego, Carolina, Tampa Bay, New Orleans, Tennessee and Cincinnati. Throw out Denver and San Diego, along with Carolina and New Orleans, and Oakland and Tampa Bay because those teams play head-to-head. If the Chiefs lose to the Bengals, baring ties that’s a 4-3 record. The outcome in doubt would be the Tennessee at Indianapolis game.

For the Rams the focus is on the outcome of games involving Philadelphia, Washington, the New York Giants, Dallas, Seattle, Arizona, San Francisco and Chicago. Throw out Dallas and Philly, along with Seattle and Arizona and Washington and San Francisco; those teams play head to head; again a 3-3 record. That leaves the outcome of Chicago at Houston and the N.Y. Giants at Minnesota as key games for the Rams when it comes to strength of schedule.

Here’s the grid:

Team Rec. Opp. Record Final Game
Detroit 0-15 111-84/.571 at Green Bay
CHIEFS 2-13 109-85-1/.562 at Cincinnati
St. Louis 2-13 110-84-1/.567 at Atlanta
Cincinnati 3-11-1 109-85-1/.562 Chiefs
Seattle 4-11 103-91-1/.531 at Arizona
Oakland 4-11 108-87/.554 at Tampa Bay
Cleveland 4-11 112-81-2/.580 at Pittsburgh

More than likely will end up with the number 3 because will be the Bengals. The Rams will be 2 and Bengals 4.

  • December 23, 2008  - JohnNdallas says:

So what happens if the Chiefs beat the bungles, will they and the Chiefs have a coin toss for the #3 pick? Assuming the Rams lose.

  • December 23, 2008  - RedandGoldRice says:

No, they’ll still have half a loss less than us. We’ll pick no lower than 3rd.

  • December 23, 2008  - RedandGoldRice says:

That half a loss is due to their tie, go figure. It helps us out.

  • December 23, 2008  - JohnNdallas says:

    LOL OK, Thanks

  • December 23, 2008  - DanKCFan says:

Yes I say we lock up the 3rd spot. Since we will beat the bungles. GO CHIEFS

Hopefully and likely DET will take the overhyped Okie QB Sam ‘The Butcher’ Bradford – if he comes out, saving the Chiefs from that draft mmistake.

Whether the Chiefs pick #2 or #3 STL won’t take the other oevrhype Stafford – but – SEATT at #5 just might be interested in him. If so, Chiefs blow smoke and trade down to #5 and get SEATT’s #3 also.

‘If’ the Chiefs draft another QB – and I don’t think they will – a Graham Harrell round #3, or later say #5 or #6 round a Daniel would be more likely choices.

Herm Edwards is gonna break the whiners including the local radio hack Kietzman’s heart -again – by not taking a QB in round 1.

    heh heh heh

    :-)

I hope that whatever happens, it leads to either a trade back, or the selection of Curry…I would hate to see KC draft a QB, when last week we dropped 31 points and lost…I look at how bad the offense was BEFORE Thigpen, he may make mistakes, but he is young. Sure there is a Derek Anderson type warning, but hes very athletic.

It wouldnt make much sense to not take a leader on defense….especially when right now, I wouldnt resign DJ if his contract was up…and even if he plays well next year, I would consider that its a contract year. He looks good at times, and other times looks to lose focus…still…despite being moved to MLB…I hope he can turn it around because DJ at MLB means Curry makes a lot of sense.

  • December 23, 2008  - tm1946 says:

Sorry rin, if herm is still employed and in charge of the draft, I would suggest he get the player he thinks best fits his plan for the chiefs. It is his job and reputation on the line and he should die by his own sword.

I would suggest the best player at about any position. Mike Sweeney was the man until the team got better and then he was not wanted. The same can happen with the chiefs, they are so bad a top notch player could step in for just about anyone on the team.

  • December 23, 2008  - ED says:

If we’re at number 3 slot trade down if possible and get a couple of more picks Especially if we can land a top notch defensive end at the 8 or 9th pick. Use the extra picks to grab right tackle and guard. And get more linebackers outside and middle. Though last week Derrick showed more improvement at the middle. And now that Demmario is healthy he’s been playing preety good ball.

  • December 23, 2008  - Uncuffed says:

If Herm is coach, I think that may *RAISE* our likelihood of drafting a QB. Herm dislikes the spread offense, and puts a very high premium on the QB position. He’s looking for the best leader he can, and whether he thinks Thigpen can be it is a matter of debate. If he doesn’t draft a QB, it must mean he’s confident Thigpen can learn and run a more typical “herm offense” effectively.

  • December 23, 2008  - Uncuffed says:

Not resign DJ?? He’s our best linebacker in a very thin group! We already need 3-4 new linebackers on this team, why add another need? I think people are over-blowing DJ’s “struggles” b/c they had such high pro-bowl hopes for him after last years performance. If you put it in perspective, he’s still a quality LB who could bounce back to pro-bowlish form in the future.

I’m not sure, but i think DJ signed a 5-year contract, so it’s not up until after next season anyway.

  • December 23, 2008  - ED says:

I hate the spread as a base offense myself. I think we need to get rid of it as our base offense. One thing all of us have to keep in mine is that running the football is what wins in this league. Not a flashy passing game. We need to go back to a more conventional offense and be more balanced. I’m not saying not to throw the footbal but it doesnt need to be thrown 40 times. Thats why the Eagles are losing games throwing it way too much. IN the offseason install a conventional offense that plays to Tyler’s strength and run the football and use more play-action pass plays next year.

    “Sorry rin”

    - love means never having to say you’re sorry… and I know how much you love me- Rin sense a lot of love on this here blog…heh heh heh

“if herm is still employed and in charge of the draft, I would suggest he get the player he thinks best fits his plan for the chiefs. It is his job and reputation on the line and he should die by his own sword.”

    - and he shall, but Rin doesn’t think they will keep that high a pick whther #2 or $3 – if they do stay at their clot, it will be an OT & not a QB any, my opine.

Now, if it’s not Herm a QB might be possibility, but if say a Pioli comes to KC – slim – some are already swearing on their mama’s grave he’ll sign Cassel as a free agent. My thot is maybe KC signs Cassel regardless a Pioli or whomever comes here. At any, Thigpen, Croyle, Martin – even Gray isn’t old. And for all gaga over a Ryan or Flacco, I’ve yet to be convinced either guy will be any better when it’s all said & done than the Chiefs current QB pickins.

“I would suggest the best player at about any position. Mike Sweeney was the man until the team got better and then he was not wanted. The same can happen with the chiefs, they are so bad a top notch player could step in for just about anyone on the team.”

    - brace yourself…we’ve consensus the sentiment, if not on the where or whom such sentiment leads KC to choose.

    :-)

  • December 23, 2008  - Uncuffed says:

We definitely need to mix in more formations on top of the spread. However, I don’t buy this “you can’t run in the spread” crap. We’ve done it, and done it effectively. They just aren’t trying enough. I don’t see how going from the currently ~15 runs a game up to 20 runs a game is going to “destroy” the whole spread offense.

  • December 23, 2008  - Rin Tin Tin says:

clot? Perchance slot, but ne’er snot…

  • December 23, 2008  - kcsno56 says:

Bob, your #’s are off. My guess is, you are counting the division opponents records once instead of twice, but this isn’t how the NFL does it.

The Star had it correct today, as of now, the Rams and Chiefs SOS is tied at 128-111-1.

For the Chiefs, the games that matter are: Oak @ TB (b/c Oak’s record is counted twice) and Ten @ Indy.

And for the Rams: NYG @ MIN, CHI @ HOU, WAS @ SF.

If you want the Chiefs to get the 2nd pick, pull for TB, IND, NYG, CHI, SF.

If KC and STL both lose Sunday, and 3 of those 5 win, it’ll be a coinflip. 2 or less, STL picks 2nd. 4 or 5, KC pick 2nd.

If KC and STL somehow both win Sunday, then 3 or more would give the Chiefs the 2nd pick, 2 of 5 would be a coinflip, 0 or 1, STL picks 2nd.

The reason these are different is b/c CIN winning makes our SOS better…whereas STL plays ATL, and that game doesn’t sway SOS b/c KC and STL both played ATL.

  • December 23, 2008  - JohnNdallas says:

OK That makes a little more sense to me, I was thinking something wasn’t right from reading the above. Thanks Kcnos56.

  • December 23, 2008  - JohnNdallas says:

Danials =6th-7th rd maybe even College FA, If Chiefs wanna reach in 3rd or 4th rd and Tebow is there than that would be a decent pick, if not at QB, he might be a hell of a Tight-End.

  • December 23, 2008  - Uncuffed says:

If we would happen to commit to the spread offense (not saying we should), Daniels would well be worth a late round pick (6th?) to us as a quick study and likely effective backup.

agh, you people have me saying “Daniels”… DANIEL

  • December 23, 2008  - NFL fan says:

This will be very interesing position for the new general manager being in the top three along with maybe Herm or the new head coach to decide .Which is it to address the offensive line , defensiveline , or quarterback I hate to say it because they have put so much on the defense over the past few years but it has to be priority number one I think defensive end they need that pass pressure prescence to wreck havoc on the quarterback. Hopefully just hopefully there is a diamond in the rough young gun quarterback in the later rounds. Then address the offensiveline next in the and third or fourth rounds. It will be very interesting.

  • December 23, 2008  - colby says:

NO MORE ROOKIE D LINEMEN…..PLEASE!!!! These guys don’t generally make a huge impact as rookies and take too much time to develop. A few veterans would be nice. Peppers and Haynesworth are the big names, but even an Ebunezer Ekuban or a Michael Montgomery at DE or perhaps a Jovan Haye or a Shaun Cody as versatile DT/DE tweeners would be nice.

Get some D linemen that are ready to play NOW. Keep Babin, Ron Edwards and Boone as well. It’s no coincidence that those three have produced 1/3 or our sacks this year. They are veterans who have gotten good coaching elsewhere instead of the crap coaching our players get here.

Also, if Herm keeps his job, Gunther and Krumrie need to be run out of town. Jimmy Wilkerson produced one sack (two half sacks actually) in five years as a Chief. So far in Tampa, he has five sacks this year. Gun and Krum obviously can’t coach worth a damn.

  • December 23, 2008  - colby says:

We won’t need to draft a QB once Pioli, McDaniels, and Cassel are here to save the franchise.

For new D coordinator, it’ll either be Dom Capers, who has always done a nice job in that capacity, or Romeo Crennell, one of the best in the business who is in over his head as a head coach.

If Herm keeps his job, look for our new D coordinator to be Rod Marinelli once he is canned in Detroit.

  • December 23, 2008  - Rip 'em a new one says:

Another interesting draft pick/slotting dicussion from the previous thread so I won’t repeat what I’ve already stated. I will advance this notion:

The most important position on any NFL team is the QB. Say it again. The most important…okay, you get the drift.

Thigpen has been both a disaster (ATL game), a delight and a study in mediocrity (Pick your games). The big question is can Thigpen become consistently good? CONSISTENTLY being the operative word.

The current benchmark for him to aspire is setting in Atlanta. Matt Ryan has been CONSISTENT for a rook or a veteran, and has led his team into the improbable land of playoffs against all odds.

Is Thigpen of the same consistent stripe? If judged so by the new GM and head coach, then, OK, fine, go with the guy. If the decision makers are wrong, it’s their job and ass on the line.

For us, it’s just another day of prognosticating around the Bob Gretz forum. There is a difference, obviously, and one we all might want to keep in mind as the following weeks and months of post-season 2008 unfold, you know?

  • December 23, 2008  - Rin Tin Tin says:

When Herm starts drafting for the Chiefs in April it will again be dependent on what he’s acquired for the club in free agency.

Rin believes Herm’s Chiefs in 2009 with oh, say two good OLBS (maybe Curry & Dansby or even put D. Johnson back out there and use Curry in the middle), may be able to produce more sacks just by virtue of having better athletes at LB. Then becomes a matter of Hali at RE from the start where he is obviousy more effective, and getting a good DE on the other side.

Excitement’s growin’ as Herm prepares to lead ther Chiefs into the 2009 season! Keep up the great work Coach Edwards- ALL of KC is behind you – and Clark Hunt has RE-RE-affirmed you!

    ANd so does Rin!

    :-)

  • December 23, 2008  - Uncuffed says:

colby, some of those guys need to be let go if we are to bring in new DLine guys. Either they decide someone like McBride or Tyler is a bust and cut ties, or they let go of Babin (no real loss) and Edwards (serviceable but seemingly out of favor). Then we could have:

    DT: dorsey, Free-Agent, boone, Tyler
    DE: Hali, Rookie, McBride, Johnston?

  • December 23, 2008  - RedandGoldRice says:

Cassel will most likely be franchised, so he’s out.

  • December 23, 2008  - colby says:

Brian Johnston is not the next Jared Allen, or at least he didn’t show much before he got hurt. There’s better options than him. Tank Tyler needs competition next year instead of being handed a starting spot. Same goes for Dorsey. The more good D linemen competing for a job the better.

The Pats won’t franchise Cassel. They have too much invested in Brady to do that. They drafted O’Connell in round 3 this year for a reason. He’ll step in for Brady next year until he’s healthy. They’ll let Cassel walk and get a compensatory pick from the league for him in 2010. Would they like more? Sure, but they can’t afford to franchise Cassel in hopes of trading him. I think we’ll have a real shot at getting him. Especially if Pioli and McDaniels are calling the shots!

Colby, there’s another side to this question. If you’re the Pats and have a decision between bringing back Cassel at a hefty $14Million price tag WHILE dealing Brady to a hungry team willing to give up a high draft pick package, what do you do?

Keep Brady and let Cassel go for little in return, while realizing that Cassel has proven himself, is younger, and not facing the issue of post injury competence as is the case with Brady?

I’m just saying that the Pats might want to consider these factors before they cast Cassel out into the FA waters.

  • December 23, 2008  - jorge says:

You have to recognize that Matt Ryan is a special case. Matt Ryan has all the tools, with a better coaching staff than the chiefs and they have a wicked, consistent running game.

To draft a QB with Herm leading the team would only delay the “rebuilding” process of this organization and would only encourage Tony G. to leave the chiefs.

I say no to drafting a QB. Tyler will be in his second year and has an understanding of this offense. If you want, draft a QB in the later rounds, but stick to FA on that position.

Trade Tony who is most likely going to leave anyway and focus on the Defense and fix the running game.

Oh yeah, when it’s 4th and1 and you got L.J., you RUN! DON’T PASS HERMTARD!

  • December 23, 2008  - Tribal Warfare says:

If QB Matt Stafford(declares) is available with his connections to the KC Chiefs, I fully expect him to be selection since he’ll be the best player available. P.S. Herm is not re-re affrimed as the “MAN”., bank on it.

  • December 23, 2008  - ED says:

I just read an article on ESPN.com that Bill W. says we need to go after a defensive end with the first pick. I totally agree. This quarterback class doesn’t have the same pedigree of a Matt Ryan or Peyton Manning. I like Bradford alot he’s playing in a pro-style offense and all of that, but the guy hasn’t been hit in the mouth. So I don’t know how he’ll respond coming into the NFL taking big hits. The one thing I learned about Matt Ryan that made me believe my second favorite team Atlanta should take him. Was watching play in the VA Tech game last year. He took hit after hit but he kept fighting and brought BC back to win the game. As far as Stafford goes he’s too inconsistent. I live down here in the heart of the SEC and watched enough games on him to know he’s not consistent enough quarterback to draft that high. Every big game he’s played in the SEC this year he’s folded. So I’m like jorge ride it out with Tyler and draft a defensive end. We need to see how Tyler develops with all of training camp under his belt and practicing and developing with the starters.

For one I like the guys attitude. Beyond his physical skills his mobility and strong arm. The guy wants to be a good quarterback. So I say hold off drafting a quarterback in the first couple of rounds and get this defensive and offensive line built first. If Tyler does not show enough in 2009 to keep him the starter draft a quarterback in 2010 however I think he will. The one guy I keep hearing guys around here talk about as a sleeper quarterback in the draft is John Parker Wilson from Alabama. I’m going to have to keep my eye on that guy.

  • December 23, 2008  - Uncuffed says:

I don’t know if i’d qualify Thigpen’s arm as “strong”. It’s good enough, but he often puts a lot of air under it.

If he can learn to see the whole field better, I’m sold.

  • December 23, 2008  - colby says:

I’d like to see them focus on the offensive line and linebackers in the draft, especially in the early rounds, and QB and DL in free agency. Honestly, the only young QB I’d rather have than Thigpen (that is realistically available) would be Cassel. If Herm is kept, I think they’ll stick with Thigpen. If Herm is fired, it’ll all depend on who the new GM and HC are.

  • December 23, 2008  - Rin Tin Tin says:

Matt Ryan will be another Roman Gabriel…loser with a Capital L, footnote inhistory.

    Flacco? Gesundheit, ay caramba.

The Little Big Man From Coastal Carolina will be better than either when it’s all said and done.

Keep up the great work Coach Edwards. ALL of KC is behind you and we know that you will lead us back to glory very soon now.

AND NOW, Clark Hunt has RE-RE-affirmed Herm’s The Man! And so does Rin!

    :-)

  • December 23, 2008  - Chiefs Fan In Donkey Land says:

If I were the new GM this is what I would do:

Pick up Haynesworth and either Peppers or Suggs in free agency, -DL solved (This would do wonders for our secondary as well, who are already pretty good)

Then, in the draft take curry in the first and in the 2nd get one of the top 3 ILB’s as I do not see 3 going in the first,(Spikes hopefully)- LB solved

In the 3rd hopefully Loadholt or Duke Robinson is still there and in the 4th address whichever position was not filled in the 3rd round. In the 5th round I would look for another OL (perhaps Center)- OL solved

Then in the 6th I find the next Tom Brady- QB solved

  • December 23, 2008  - JohnNdallas says:

Well I’m convinced now! M.Ryan and J Flacco will be HOFer’s

  • December 23, 2008  - Mark says:

We are not going into big ticket, “name” Free Agency again. Study after study, and our own experiences with Carl, show that is NOT the way to go, so forget about Haynesworth, Peppers, et al. We’ll sign some young, ascending FA’s like Demorrio Williams and hope they develop here. And hope to steal guys like Mark Bradely that some other team gives up on.
I like Cassel, but he’s not any better than Thiggy, and will be far, far over paid. Thigpen is the guy for this team for the next few years.

  • December 24, 2008  - tm1946 says:

I like Thigpen and appreciate what he has done for this team but he has not gotten better with his time in charge. He still locks on a receiver and is wildly umaccurate.

    D. Williams has had ONE good game, last week. During the butt kicking beginning of the season he never saw the field. Apparently herm did not like what he saw until the injuries wiped out the others. Please, an up and comer, I doubt it.

  • December 24, 2008  - ED says:

I’m not going to say Thigpen is wildly inaccurate. He misses a couple throws but so do most quarterbacks. HIs completion percentage has been good for the most part. Locking on receivers he does sometimes, but that because he’s young quarterback maturity will come with that if given the offseason to develop. I just look at where he came from starting with the Falcons game. If he can do that then he should drastically improve with an offseason to prepare.
