Column: Where Is This Team Going?

From Arrowhead Stadium

Have you ever taken a novice driver out and tried to teach them how to operate a moving vehicle?

If you have, then the herky, jerky nature of the 2009 Chiefs season is familiar.

Last week, the Chiefs did the equivalent of driving on the highway, staying in their lane and exiting properly. Then Sunday at Arrowhead, the Chiefs drove off the road, into the other lane, crashed into a bridge abutment and dented every side of the car.

Right now, the tow truck is waiting to haul this team away. The question is, where does it go? Just what direction is the team headed for over the final nine games of the ‘09 season?

When a team loses by 30 points at home to a division rival, it’s pretty darn hard to pinpoint one play or situation that decided the game. There were many moments in the Chiefs-Chargers battle where the guys with the lightning bolts showed beyond a shadow of a doubt they were the better team.

They were helped by the Chiefs, and especially their head coach.

Todd Haley is a novice head coach, having never led a football team at any level. He has just seven games under his belt and it showed on Sunday when he made several decisions that really hurt his football team.

The first one came early, when the Chiefs faced fourth-and-one at their own 41-yard line. San Diego led 7-0 at the time and at this point the game was still in doubt. The smart move would have been to punt the ball, cover the kick, or even bang it into the end zone for a touchback. That would have given the Chargers offense the ball at the 20-yard line.

Haley decided to go for a first down. QB Matt Cassel tried a quarterback sneak that didn’t gain an inch, let alone a yard. The Chargers had the ball inside the 50-yard line and it took them eight plays to move those 41 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead that ended any thoughts the Chiefs had of being part of this game.

“It’s a yard,” said Haley about his decision. “Would I like to have that one back? I might. We gave them a short field.

“I was aggressive minded. It was a play we practiced. Your mindset is you are trying to score a touchdown.”

Funny thing about practice – sometimes how a team performs during the week of preparation has nothing to do with what happens on Sunday. Haley said it was one of the team’s best weeks of practice. In fact he called Friday’s workout the best of the season.

“We were excited to get to the game,” Haley said. “We got our butts kicked across the board.”

It’s never good when a team contributes to its own butt-kicking and that’s what Haley’s decision did.

There was another curious coaching moment at the end of the first half. San Diego led 17-0, but the Chiefs put together their best possession of the first half, moving the ball inside Chargers territory. A long pass to the end zone from Cassel to new WR Lance Long didn’t work out, as Long could not hold onto the ball. Facing third-and-three at the San Diego 26-yard line, Haley called a shovel pass that went from Cassel to RB Jamaal Charles for one-yard.

Facing fourth-and two at the 25-yard line, the smart move is to let the play clock run down to three seconds and then call a timeout. Then, you send the kicker out to try a 43 or 44-yard field goal. Under this scenario, there would be less than 30 seconds left.

But the Chiefs weren’t sure what they wanted to do on the play. Haley admits he wanted to go for the first down. Somebody was talking in his ear, telling him to go for the field goal. With the clock at 1:11, the Chiefs called timeout, keeping a good 20 to 25 extra seconds on the clock for the Chargers.

Ryan Succop missed the 43-yard FG, but the Chargers had the ball at their own 34-yard line and 67 seconds left. They used 66 seconds to set up a 39-yard field goal that gave them a 20-0 half-time lead.

If the Chiefs chew up that game clock time and if Succop hits the FG, it’s a 17-3 game at half-time.

“If I had known for sure I was going to kick the ball, I probably would have held that and used 20 more second or whatever I could have used,” Haley said. “I was talked out of going for it on fourth down.

“We knew had deferred (on the coin toss) and you know you are going to get the football. I thought we needed three points bad. It was a letdown. Lance Long had a chance to make a play. It was great effort but he didn’t come up with it. It was disappointing to the end of the half we allowed them to go down the field.”

It was not a good day for the young head coach. Haley is now 1-6 on the season and his team showed again on this Sunday that they are far from a proven product. The numbers scream bad football: 203 total offensive yards, just 82 net passing yards, four sacks given up, three interceptions, seven penalties, no takeaways, no sacks, a half-dozen major yardage plays allowed, a punt was blocked and untold mental mistakes.

With the bye week coming up, the Chiefs will have time to practice. But just what do they do? Where do they go from here?

“We’ve got to be better than that,” Haley said in the coaching understatement of the day.

If what we saw Sunday was the direction this team will take, then the final nine games of this season are going to be uglier than what we saw against the Chargers.

I love Haley as a head coach. His principles and the way he handles his players is that of a successfull head coach. On the opposite end of the spectrum as a player caller he’s one of the worst in the league right now. I mean some of the plays he draws up during certain courses of the game makes you scratch your head. Maybe Pioli should strip his rights to call plays right now because after watching 7 games of his play calling I’m positive Gailey would have done better.

Seriously the bye week is coming up if this offense continues at this rate it will go down in Chiefs history as one of the worst offenses of all time. Yeah the defense made some mistakes out there but when your offense keeps going 3 and out all the time its demoralizing. Bob why aren’t you and the Chiefs media calling this guy out. I watched the interview none of you all are challenging Haley at press conference on how he’s not doing a good job calling plays.

How about that QB play…. do you Cassel believers….. still feel that way???? Why did the 3rd string QB mop up instead of Brodie ??? What are they saving Brodie for ???? I have 63mil reason for it!!!!! Wouldn’t you believers at least want to see if a change could make a difference???? I Sure As Heck Do PnS

Until we get a new offensive line nothing is going to change. My bigger concern today was how often Cassel missed the deep ball – one of those was a sure touchdown (Charles) and another was a likely touchdown (Wade). He’s been very poor on those throws all year. Even with a better line down the road, will he be able to make those plays?

  • October 25, 2009  - GA says:

Disagree re the 4th and 1, at least in terms of going for it: from what I’ve read about win percentage analysis and retrospective stats on NFL games, I think there’s a good argument for trying on 4th down when you’re at your own 40, or beyond. Also, as badly as the KC secondary played today, adding another 30-40 yards to go for SD wouldn’t have had any material effect on the game’s outcome. None at all, IMHO. Ditto for the 4th and 2 at the end of the 1st half– I’d recommend to go for it in that situation. Now, as far as the playcall of a QB sneak…. not so clear THAT was a good idea.

Hey, KC is going to have several bad games this year, maybe also next year. They were an old team beginning to break down four years ago, and now they are hitting bottom after their vets got old and lost skills and trade value. Peterson and Edwards had two years to draft talent to restock the team, and so far their record is at best spotty. No coach was going to make this a playoff team this year, or even a winning team. They won, what, six games in the previous two years and before? When Pioli et al took over they didn’t have either a reliable QB, speed at WR, a good young RB, an experienced high-quality LT or even an average center and guard combo. What they inherited was probably the worst set of LB’s in the league, along with a defensive line devoid of pass rush ability.

  • October 25, 2009  - Alexthe"GREAT" says:

Good points GA…but we dont want 2 talk about “the worst set of LB’s in the league” lets talk about number 53, according 2 Haley he is the man and so is Mays.

  • October 25, 2009  - BinSC says:

I like Cassel. I believe he generally throws the ball well deep. I was surprised he missed Charles, but also note that he stepped up quickly to avoid pass rushers. His throw to Long was great as was the TD to Bowe. Got to think the easy ones will come when he can be more comfortable in the pocket (which is about a foot and a half wide). A running game and WR/TE’s who can catch are a nice luxury as well.

I think Sean Ryan may have sealed his fate. Can’t block and now apparently can’t catch. You are here, why? Give O’Connel a shot.

  • October 25, 2009  - Alexthe"GREAT" says:

LT has looked old and broken up all year but against our defense he looked like he was fresh out of college. Haley/Pioli have piss poor eyes for evaluating talent…..did any1 see Mcgraw on that swing pass 2 Sproles, it look like the guy was in a wheelchair rolling backwards trying 2 stop a ferrari. Numerous times they attack Mcgraw deep and he looked like he didnt have a clue what was going on…he may be a helluva blitzer but in pass coverage he stinks. With that said shouldnt we be questioning the coaches about putting players in the right positions 2 succeed?

All I see is a team in slow motion and I believe it’s the coaches fault.

It isn’t that other teams have more blockers on the O line it’s that the QB gets rid of the ball!!! Other teams have penetration issues…they just overcome!!!

It isn’t that our Wide Outs suck or are slow. It’s the fact that the coach can’t draw up plays that get them open. If you watch NE or the Steelers you can see their receivers crossing and getting each other open. I may not know much about run patterns but the same shit over and over doesn’t work.

Our Defense plays their heart out…they have to. They aren’t perfect by any means but they spend more time on the field than they should.

Our coach, who is our play caller…doesn’t fit the bill. He is in slow motion. Period! And at this time I don’t see much improvement from our QB either!!!!

    IMHO.

  • October 25, 2009  - Rodeo John says:

4 TE’s are way too many. Ryan needs to go. Long needs to give the rest of the possible receivers lessons on how to take a hit in the middle and still hang onto the ball.

For the Cassel haters…yeah he over threw a couple…guess he proved you wrong saying he couldn’t even go long. And that was a pretty damn nice and accurate throw to Long in the endzone…that was a very small window in which to put the ball.

Now don’t get me wrong…Cassel made some mistakes, as did the o-line, the RB’s, defense, and even our best part of the team, special teams.

We played as if there was no unity on this team. Pure and simple.

some of the play call are un realistic like the 4th and 1 with our line of course we didnt do it we should have did a tim tebow stepped forword like a sneak and threw it 2 d bowe on a slant.

  • October 25, 2009  - ED says:

Pendergrast has the defense playing well for the most part. His only problem is he runs to much zone when he’s not blitzing. Bottom line Romo, Eli, and no Rivers have killed us when we were playing zone. Come on Clancy it obvious against good quarterbacks you need to play more man. Thats how the Raiders stayed in the game against these guys. But it never helps when your offense can’t stay on the field and continue to go 3 and out.

If this offense doesn’t improve we’ll win 3 more games at best. Browns, Jags, and Raiders. Thats it. If we’re going to win 6 or 7 games like I assume this team has the potential to do we better get this offense on track.

  • October 25, 2009  - Buffalo Jay says:

This team is going backwards Bob, that’s where it’s going. Herm was forced to start the rebuilding project without a lot of support from the previous GM. When he did, the team got younger and faster, underexperienced for sure. After 2 seasons of rebuilding it was getting difficult to bear, so we canned him. Now we have a new GM, new head coach, and completely new philosophy in which type of players we need and which direction we should go in. Because of this we’ve completely scrapped any progress made in rebuilding in the pass two years. Released or traded players with future potential, maybe not perfect, but not many players are. Benched players for lesser talent all because they were deemed Herm or Carl’s players, and where has it gotten us? Nowhere! This is moving backwards, and because it is, it will take at least 3 more years to get us back into the hunt for the playoffs. Cassel is not the future and this team needs to get some balls. That starts with leadership. If I see one more game of mediocre play from the QB and they don’t bench him to try and get something going, then the team leadership doesn’t understand what it takes to win. If that happens it’s going to be a long road back to the promise land for all of us. I hope I am wrong, but so far all the evidence points to the contrary.

Let’s go Chiefs, get it together!

  • October 25, 2009  - Uncuffed says:

I was thinking the same thing, Bob. The free pass I as giving Haley has run out and i’m starting to get a little concerned. Without a doubt he needs an offensive coordinator next year. He can’t handle all of this himself.

And who is talking him out of decisions? Pioli?

  • October 25, 2009  - Uncuffed says:

I think it’s pretty funny that some of you think they’re “hiding” Brodie. Do you really think Brodie is a better QB? Based on what exactly? His ability to get hurt?

As far as using the 3rd stringer for ultra mop up, that’s not unusual. Watch more football.

  • October 25, 2009  - Buffalo Jay says:

    Uncuffed,
I actually do think that Brodie is a better QB. He’s more acurate, and has more armstregth. His ability to stay healthy is always a concern. But if you wan’t evidence that he’s better, look at his play in the first game of the season. In that one game Brodie was better than Cassel has been all season. Brodie should have come into this game starting in the 4th quarter to see if he could get the ball moving, becuase at that point it was blatently obvious Cassel was not getting the job done. Also, I watch a lot of football, and the 3rd stringer doesn’t see much action in garbage time, it’s usually the 2nd stringer!

  • October 25, 2009  - ED says:

ONe game doesn’t make Brodie better than Cassell come on. Seriously last year people were saying trade Tom Brady for a 1st round pick and make Cassell the franchise player in New England. I don’t think Cassell has forgotten how to play quarterback. Put similar talent around this guy he’ll win here in KC as well. Nothing against Brodie but seriously if you can’t stay healthy then what good is all that talent. Buffalo Jay you’re overreacting just like every other Chiefs fan after a bad lost. Be more rational and use your head. Brodie is a good back but injuries will prevent him from ever being a franchise qb. Besides if he does get out there and do ok he’ll just get hurt again and people will be saying here we go again. Because that o-line is no better than the one last year.

And another thing isn’t Brodie the same guy the Thigpen outplayed last year. And now he suppose to be better than Cassell LMAO. BE FOREAL

  • October 25, 2009  - Tim Geary says:

To be honest, I don’t think Todd Haley is the one…I just don’t think a personnel guy, whose dad was a famous personnel guy, is what this team needs. It’s not good. I think Pioli is a perfect fit. I just don’t think Haley is the guy. Just my opinion. Great guy, nice, smart, just not the guy.

  • October 25, 2009  - Buffalo Jay says:

Thigpen never outplayed Croyle last year, he just played! ED you need to take off your rose colored Cassel glasses and realize that a career backup doesn’t become a franchise QB just becuase he had one good year on a great team.

I find it insulting that you think I am overreacting ED. I am actually quite calm and very reasonable. I never said that Croyle will ultimately be better than Cassel and I admitted his injury problems. I do however believe that if your offense cannot move the ball and are consistently going 3 and out, then a change needs to be made. The fact of the matter is that Croyles game against Baltimore was better than Cassel has played to date, and as I stated above, if Cassel has one more bad game then a switch should be made.

Try not insulting people in the future, it makes you look small.

  • October 25, 2009  - True Red & Gold says:

This was Haley’s worst game for sure. He made a serious mistake firing Galey and he will take plenty of heat for that. Pioli will not can Haley after one year. I think it will be another story for Pendergast however. No one really knows just yet if Haley will be a successful HC. I like the guy and I am watching how he handles the adversity.

I think that if there was going to be a QB change it should have been earlier and it should have been Brodie. I also watch a lot of football and usually the 2nd stringer gets mop up duty. Cassel is a fighter for sure and it makes up for his shortcomings. I still think he will be ok. Brodie won’t get a real shot unless Cassel is injured. Remember those of you that keep making excuses for Cassel, Brodie has never played behind a stellar OL.

We have some very promising DBs and they are doing what they can. They are not the problem and to say they are shows ignorance. There isn’t a corner or safety in the league that can consistently cover when the QB has all day and can basically throw at his leisure.

This team is not getting better and the coaching staff will take the blame. If things continue there will be a lot of house cleaning at the end of the season. Haley will be safe for another year though.

  • October 25, 2009  - Anonymous says:

I Agree B.Jay Change is in order not just at the QB/WR/DB ….but DLine also .What do we have to lose …….If Cassel is the 2nd coming of Brady as some on here say …..save him for next year . He wont last out the year at this rate …..and we just might win one. PnS

  • October 25, 2009  - Jim Lloyd+ says:

What’s too worry ,Matt and Brodie are not seasoned QB’s and may never be , they need someone like Garcia – Vick —–Someone that can move the dam_ ball down the field , not just flail it around , To reciever’s that are clueless .
I guess if I was Bowe and worried so much about getting slamed , why would I care , unless when I don’t have time to think and just grab it .

  • October 25, 2009  - ED says:

Boy I guess its true when you’re the backup everybody loves you until you get in there and don’t do as good. Bottom line this game just isn’t about Cassell. He missed some throws but there was time when he made some and guys couldn’t hang on to the ball. Also what about the times he didn’t have to throw the ball. Brodie had his chance and couldn’t stay healthy. He had one decent game and now all of a sudden he’s the savior. And yes Thigpen outplayed Brodie last year. Thigpen stayed healthy while Brodie couldn’t last I checked Brodie still haven’t won an NFL game. Where Cassell has had some sucess.

I’m not saying Brodie is garbage but going to him at quarterback isn’t going to change anything when the play calling dosen’t make alot of sense and you can’t get anything out of the running game. Or the o-line can’t protect the qb. I mean you put Brodie in there taking the same shots Cassell has he’ll be back on the injury reserve. Boy its like most of you have a short term memory. This is the same kid that was wrapped up in a couch last yr against the Titans. It isn’t going to change all of a sudden behind basically the same o-line.

Either way I’m calling out the guy calling the plays. I mean come on what do you want to do on offense. Run the ball, throw it deep, or call shorter routes. We’re 7 games into the season and the offense has no identity. If Haley doesn’t figure out on offense how to play to this offense strengths like Gailey did last yr then we’re not going to win more than 3 or 4 games this season.

  • October 25, 2009  - Mad Chief says:

Haley said. “We got our butts kicked across the board.”

That pretty much sums it all up right there. Problem is, you can say that about pretty much every game they’ve played so far. The only consistent player has been our kicker…who basically single-handedly gave us our only win, because our offense can’t score touchdowns.

The problem? Hell, you name it. I keep watching for improvements…and even thought I was seeing some a time or two. I was wrong. I watch quite a bit of football. And the Chiefs are just about as dismal a team as there is in the NFL…if not the worst. At least the Rams have a kick ass running back…and they can hang their hat on that, if nothing else. What do the Chiefs have? Nothing. Nothing at all. There is not one single thing the Chiefs can point to and say, “We may suck…but, at least THIS is working”.

I’m trying really hard to stay on Haley’s side. But, his play calling is terrible, his use of players is very questionable, and his staff is extremely unimpressive.

I’ll keep watching, and waiting for some improvements this year. However, after the game today…I’ve stopped holding my breath.

  • October 25, 2009  - Dan says:

I’m not too sure I like the scrap all of Carl & Herms guys and bring in any dead beat we can find off the street to try to prove the “win 2 games with any 53 off the street” theory. I’ll stick it out this year but they better make a HUGE splash with assistant coaching upgrades, free agency with the players in the off-season and a stellar draft next April.

You can’t call the kind of plays you did in Arizona when you have KCs tallent!!!

  • October 25, 2009  - el cid says:

This is not the bottom yet. At some point the “fear factor” will fall on deaf ears, then look out. I believe Haley will get 2010 to fix this pile. Since I do not believe he has any skills as a HC, it could get really bad about this time next year. Trash carl and herm but most of their guys have been run out of town. This is all pioli/Haley. Ignor the OL during free agency and draft, not carl or herms fault. 4 TEs, why none are any good. Swinging door at WR, the new one is always the featured WR the next game (except Engram, and why he is still there??). Pendergast, why is he still here, how many 300 yard games can he give up?? On and on but we will just have to survive 09 and 10. There is nothing left on this team and no future (Haley actually said he wanted more Longs on the team).

  • October 25, 2009  - Big Lee says:

Cassel (or Croyle) is not the problem. O-Line was not getting the job done when we had all 5 starters in there. Now it’s patchwork at best because of injuries. Chiefs must throw the ball more on first down, but even that will not overcome poor blocking. Use some of the cap room to bring in any available o-linemen, and draft some next spring.

  • October 25, 2009  - Uncuffed says:

    BJ and TRG,

I never said the 3rd QB gets “most” the mop up duty, I just stated the fact that the 3rd QB does get PT in “ultra” mop up duty. You have to look no further than Cassel himself for proof. He had snaps in each of 2005, 2006, and 2007, despite being the 3rd stringer for the Pats.

So yes, watch more football and read more carefully.

  • October 25, 2009  - Uncuffed says:

I like Croyle, but there is no evidence whatsoever that he’s a better option than Cassel. If you want to say week 1 completely defines Cryole, I’ll gladly point you to 11 other games and countless pre-season games that say otherwise.

Cassell is a good quarterback, and he did play terrible today. we all know he is going without protection. until he has time, we cant judge him. he’s running for his life and ive seen good balls thrown, the best balls around here since trent. he gets an F today and i saw two balls thrown that i have not seen brodie throw. i cant believe croyle is even discussed.

with our line and our receivers, tell me, which nfl qb(s) would have more than victory thus far.

today was tough to swallow, but i am fine with struggling for a bit. i like pioli, i like haley, i like cassel. this is a breath of fresh air to me compared to pederson, edwards, thigpen.

give it a sec, we’ve got virgins across the board, patience with this…

My wife and I were as frustrated as every one else while watching yesterdays game. I don’t see Brodie as the answer as he proved last year he could play OK but was to often injured. A lot of times the back up comes into a game and looks good against a team thats protecting a big lead and playing prevent defense. Fact still remains Brodie has not won a game to date. I think now would be the time to bring in a OC while we have two weeks to prepare for the next opponent (aka Washington). Isn’t it interesting that all three teams without a true OC are all sitting at the bottom of the pile (Buc’s, Bill’s and Chiefs) Going for it on forth down is not good that early, and in your own end of the field. I was not too happy when they hired our DC and I think we may see a change by next year. I feel that after last year I was fooling myself into thinking this team had more talent then we did have. Fact is we have been bad for four years and the bad drafting is really showing up. At least Marty S. and Dick V. put together OK teams their first year, but they had put together two very good offensive lines. I just hope that they get this turned around in the next two weeks as for three to four years now we end up making the other teams QB/RB/WR/TE look totally awesome. I guess it’s going to take longer then any one really wants to admit too!

Nothing is going to change until the offensive linemen either do their jobs or they are replaced by people who actually belong on an NFL roster after the first cutdown date in August.

I have no problem with Haley going for it on the sneak. An actual NFL quality o-line gets the job done and Cassel gets the first down.

Edwards inherited an old, old offensive line that was operating on borrowed time because of some selfish, short sighted decisions by Vermeil.

That same problem has been dumped in Haley’s lap.

I believe we fans have too high of expectations for OUR team. First, it is evident that we still lack quality talent across the board as far as players goes. I think Todd and Scott are doing the best they can with the talent available to them. Second, I do believe that Todd is trying to do too much for a first time Head Coach. He should’ve kept Gailey or at least replaced him, rather than taking it on himself. I hope that next year, he will get himself a proven OC, QB Coach (next point), and Off. Line Coach. Third, every young QB needs a mentor. Who is Cassel’s? Todd needs to find a QB guru or at least a coach who is proven to develop QBs. And finally, Todd needs to find a new Off. Line coach. Granted our current coach is one with years of experience but I would like to see someone like Alex Gibbs or one of his protoges who can teach a blocking scheme that can plug any player into it and it be effective especially in the run game.

Well, at least he’s honest. Todd said he could take 11 guys off the street and win 2 games. Good job Todd, just 1 game left to win.

I know alot of people don’t want to admit it but Jason Fatlock is right. We’re paying 63 million dollars to a second or third string QB.
