Chiefs Update 9/24
From the Truman Sports Complex
The Chiefs went through a two-hour and change practice session outside early Wednesday afternoon. Early morning rains drained off the practice fields quickly, but it was very warm and very humid as the players went through the workout.
Not on the practice field was LB Donnie Edwards who suffered a foot injury in Sunday’s game against Atlanta. Remember, while he’s battled plenty of injuries over the last two seasons, Edwards been a starter at linebacker for 156 consecutive regular season NFL games. Technically his starting streak ended earlier this year when the Chiefs began the New England game in the nickel defense and Edwards was on the sidelines. However it’s counted, Edwards chances of being a starting linebacker for 157 consecutive games is very dim.
CB Pat Surtain took part in some limited practice work, when the secondary went through its individual session. Surtain’s right shoulder is still on the mend and he did not take part in any of the team work.
QB Brodie Croyle was at practice, but did not participate as he recovers from his injured shoulder.

I really wish Brodie would start throwing! We need him back ASAP especially because of our other QB’s being inept!
As much as our QB’s might look “inept” I don’t care if you’d put any Hall of Fame QB in their prime back there right now, with the state of the right side of our line no one would be successful. Why won’t they give Richardson or Taylor a shot at RT and/or RG??? Jones looks to be outmatched but that might just be because he’s mopping up all of the overflow from McIntosh not being able to stop my Grandma. Being committed to the youth movement should include the RT position as well.
Add Linebacker to that also Ryan
The problem here is not Brodie or LB. The problem is we needed a rebuild. Clark and whoever decided to do that using young only. Many teams have rebuilt, I do not recall one that almost completely wiped out the veteran backbone and felt young players could be successful without veterans for guidance and continuity. Maybe next year the chiefs will be better, this year John Unitas, Dan Marino, and Vince Lombardi could make a silk purse out of this pig’s ear. Sorry Carl and Herm has suggested we are not at the bottom yet, I suggest these management types are not equiped to complete the action. We just have to ride it out and I really cannot imagine watching 13 more games of floundering by this team.
I think it is time to go ahead and phase Donnie out at LB as well. He is hurt more than he is available and I haven’t seen much contribution when he is on the field. I think he is just too beat up and tired. Unfortunately, the cupboard is kind of bare in the LB department. They cut an awful lot of young LB’s to keep Donnie and Harris. Probably should have kept a couple of them. Couldn’t really be worse.
Herm Last week 09/17/08:
Q: Why does he give you a better chance than Damon?
EDWARDS: “We just look at where we’re at as a football team. We’re constantly trying to evaluate players. We’re trying to grow a quarterback. Well, when do you grow em? They can’t grow unless they play. He needs to play. We know where Damon’s at. We know who he is. He’s a good quarterback.”

Herm this Week:
Subject: Chiefs: Q&A with HERM EDWARDS - 9/24
Q&A with HERM EDWARDS - 9/24
Sep 24, 2008, 2:51:16 PM
Highlights
HERM EDWARDS: “Damon (Huard) will be our starting quarterback (vs. Denver). When you look at us right now we need a guy who can protect the football. That’s probably the most important thing right now. We can’t turn the football over. We’ve done that too much in the last three games; it’s been 30 points we’ve given up on so far on turnovers.
“Damon is pretty comfortable in protecting the football and he’s been in this position before and we look for him to play well against Denver.”
Q: You said you were leaning towards Damon yesterday.
EDWARDS: “When you go back to how we played not making first downs and turning the ball over that’s when you get yourself in trouble. You can’t do a whole lot of that. We’ve turned the ball over too many times. I think Damon understands that. He’s played the position and he knows when to make the throw, either take the chance or not take a chance. He’s in that position more than the younger guy has. That’s what kind of made my decision.”
Q: You plan to stick with Damon and not bring someone else in?
EDWARDS: “Unless something happens. Tyler will be ready to play if he has to go in. He’s getting his reps and he’ll be ready if he has to go in.”
Q: Whenever you talked to Tyler did he take the news okay?
EDWARDS: “He understands where we’re at and, I think, that’s the maturity of where he has to be right now. He was given a great opportunity and we found out a lot about him. I think he found out a lot about himself and how difficult it is to start in this league. You’re talking about a rookie. He doesn’t have a lot of playing time. To me, he’s a rookie in my opinion. He played the whole game and did some good things to. You’ve got to build on the good things he did. Now, he has to continue to grow and get better. The turnovers are the thing that concerns me offensively at this point in time, that and the inability to make first downs. You have to be an accurate quarterback if you’re going to throw in this league.”
Q: Once he refines his game a little bit what’s he capable of in this league?
EDWARDS: “I don’t know. The more opportunities he gets to play the more mature he becomes. You never know about these quarterbacks until they play. You can’t find out until you actually play ‘em and one game is not enough. He grew up in the second half of that game. Early in the game he was a little high-strung and that’s why some of those passes were high. You anticipated that. Most guys are like that but I thought he settled down.
“The games he’s played in he’s taken the team down to score. We’ve scored more points with him than anybody. As bad as it was, he’s scored 14 points and he put us in a couple of other times to score. He did some good things but right now we can’t afford to turn the all over, especially against a team like (Denver) that scores enough points. You give them a short field it becomes a hill too high to climb.”
Q: Damon hasn’t been immune to throwing interceptions either.
EDWARDS: “No, he’s thrown a couple of picks too.”
Q: He hasn’t played a whole bunch either. Can you put your finger on why the picks were thrown?
EDWARDS: “The one was tipped against the Raiders and the one in New England the guy undercut him. The guy made a great play. You’re right: Damon hasn’t played a lot. But our first year he hadn’t played a lot either and he had to go in after the first game. He played well and caught lightening in a bottle.”
Q: He got hurt against the Raiders and didn’t come back last week. He hasn’t been available either. Was he 100% available last week?
EDWARDS: “Yeah, he could have played if he had to. But he was a little sore and we were trying to protect him.”
Q: I’m sure he was disappointed last week but he is a trouper isn’t he coming back this week and starting?
EDWARDS: “Oh yeah, he’s a pro. That’s why he’s been in the league this long. He’s a pro and understands his role. He’s had this role his whole career when you think about it. That’s his role and that’s why he is a player who can come (off the bench) and give you a little spurt at times. Hopefully, he can do it this week.”
Q: Your team is so young and your receivers are so young, how tough is it on them to have a different starter every week?
EDWARDS: “It’s different, the timing and all that. But that’s excuses and life isn’t about excuses it’s about finding solutions. We’re trying to find a solution about why we struggle right now on offense and our problem of giving up big plays on defense. It’s a lot of mental breakdowns and we’ve got to get it fixed. We’ve got to play together as a team and once we do…
“We play in spurts if you watch us play four quarters. We don’t seem to play with each other. When the offense gets going the defense lets down. When the defense is kind of going the offense is struggling. Then there is a big play on special teams. We’re struggling trying to find our way. But they’re eager to learn, they practice hard and they play hard. One of the saving graces is we’re not self-destructing with penalties.
“We’ve been pretty good with fouls. We’re averaging about three a game and that’s pretty good. That’s something we can hang our hat on but we’ve got a lot to improve on this football team.”
Q: You said last week that Huard plays better coming off the bench. Are you doing anything different to prepare him this week?
EDWARDS: “Things that he feels comfortable doing offensively. That’s what you have to realize with him. He’s a little bit different than the other two and you want to make him comfortable where he can have some success. That’s kind of where we’ve been all year.”
Q: How much of a concern is it not getting your receivers open?
EDWARDS: “They’ve been playing a lot of man-to-man and tight coverage. It’s small windows you have to throw the ball in. When those windows close they close and it’s an incompletion. Basically, then it’s third-and-long and that’s not good for us. Basically we’ve been 13 third-and-10s or more and that’s not very good.”
Q: Is that a talent issue or a coverage issue?
EDWARDS: “It’s our inability to get off man-to-man coverage at times and not making the throws or protection breaks down – lot of different things.”

Way to be firm and stick with a plan Herm. You flip flop more than a Presidential candiadte.
You nailed it again Mark!! Play The Kid!!!!
This guy is a walking talking contradiction!!!!!!!
He is lost, disoriented, confused and dumbfounded.
So now he is just taking shots in the dark, tossing the dice, grasping for straws, reading bones, talking with demons, reading the stars. But has no clue on what to do that will help all this young talent be better football players, Much less turn them into a TEAM!
great post Mark.
If this offense is so easy and meant for rookies/new players to be able to compete right away, than there is no excuse not to see what Ingle Martin has to offer.
Finally, now that Matt Millen has been fired, the King can now take his rightful (and well earned) place on the throne of the most hated GM in the NFL.
findthed….?
some kind of name switcher or what?
There’s been alot of talk about the crappy linebackers lately and I just thought of something. Bob had an article on here a few weeks back about the salary cap and cap dollars vs. cash and all that stuff. The Chiefs, as we all know, are just barely above the minimum mark of cap dollars a team must spend. You don’t suppose that the only reason we have Harris on the roster still is that he’s probably accounting for several million cap dollars and if we cut him, we’d end up having to sign someone else off the street for a few mil just to get back up over the minimum?
I’d like to see Dacus get a chance though. Also, I know it would wreck the whole youth movement (sarcasm) but I’d like to see us sign Victor Hobson. He’s 28, has plenty of starting experience and was drafted by and played for Herm in New York, so you’d think he’d know the defense fairly well already.
The problem with cutting harris is that we’d probably have to take a huge cap hit (next year, not this year when we have all of this space). We probably figured, we’re not going to win anyways, so in a few years, especially with the (maybe) no cap years, let’s just keep him on and throw him to the side. Plus, if he’s still listed as injured, we can’t cut him without paying him completely, not just his guaranteed.
….and the hits just keep on coming!
my mistake JohnNdallas. the post from findthed was mine…..i didnt notice that I had left out the ‘r’ before submitting.
Like it or not, right now this is Herm’s team and he can pretty much do with it as he pleases. The real problem is that he is forced to explain it to all of the bone heads in the world. Most of you don’t even understand the language so how could you possibly understand the logic.
I think everyone understands the language just fine, the logic just isn’t working out like he thought. I seriously believe that Herm didn’t think winnnig/losing was going to be a big deal this year since he explained over and over that this was rebuilding. I think he has approached this entire season a an extended pre-season where he can try different players and just work on specific techniques. I think he has been shocked that there is such outrage over the embarrassment he has put on the field. If there wasn’t such a reaction from fans (and probably ownership) I think he would have Thigpen back out there this week. I believe the move to Huard is just a knee jerk reaction to try to get a win and relieve some of the pressure.
That isn’t quite how I read it. I don’t think he is as concerned about Denver’s D-Line as he was Atlanta’s. Denver probably has better DBs than Atlanta so to me Damon seems like the smart choice.
Damon is the better qb of the 2. He should play every game every snap until blow-average brodie is back. Damon gives us a better chance to win than tyler, doesn’t matter who we are playing!!!
Ah Ah Ah gorillafan What happened to this is a rebuilding yr. we are going to find out “if Thigpen is a 1 or a 2 or what we just don’t know”
Herms words, not mine.
