Chiefs Update 11/14

From the Truman Sports Complex

All was quiet around the Chiefs as they went through practice indoors for just over one hour on Friday morning.  Nothing has changed on the roster and injury front for Sunday’s game at Arrowhead Stadium against New Orleans.

Herm Edwards said that the following players were out: CB Pat Surtain, CB Brandon Flowers, LB Pat  Thomas, LB Derrick Johnson, G Adrian Jones and DE Tamba Hali “will probably be out” said Edwards.

S Jarrad Page was limited in his practice work Friday, but RB Jamaal Charles and DE Turk McBride were full go and both should play against the Saints.

As for New Orleans, on Friday they listed five players as out of the game with injuries, including RB Reggie Bush, who is trying to come back from a knee injury-surgery.  Also out are CB Aaron Glenn (ankle), C Jonathan Goodwin (knee), FB Mike Karney (Knee) and DT Brian Young (knee).

Listed as probable are WR Marques Colston (knee), T Jon Stinchcomb (calf), K Garrett Hartley (back) and RB Aaron Stecker (hamstring).

Should be interesting on Defense again. Missing our top two CBs (arguably), our top LB, and our top DE (although “top” is a bit of a misnomer for any of our DE’s at this point).

The short and the…short of it: from the combine to your seat or living room purview -

In this corner for KC standing 6′1 7/8 & weighing in at 223 lbs., ‘The Little Big Man’ from Coastal Caroline - Tyler Thigpen! T-H-I-G-P-E-N!

And in the other corner for NO, standing 6′002 & weighing in at 213, the maker he of the boiler & passing hay, Drew Brees! B-R-E-E-S!.

This will be a 60 minute fight, winner take all!

AUTHOR’s NOTE: ‘If’ Tyler is 6′1 7/8 (more likely 6′0 even), then Brodie Croyle is every lb. of 206 as he’s listed…if Tyler is shy his listed, then Brodie is 6′1 3/4 & 200 - tops, with Kevin ‘Rock’ Ross in his pocket.

    :-)

    I am excited to see:
    1. How LJ does (since charles will be available along with savage)
    2. Whether they take LJ out in obvious passing situations which limits the ability of the offense to ‘hide’ the play
    3. More of gilberry, boiman, dacus, and the new DE

According to nfl cobine and at pro day Thigpen is listed at 6′1 7/8

You just mentioned my biggest concern about LJ. Do they lose the element of surprise when he is in the game, or does he actually start pass blocking so we can use him just as effectively as Charles. This is what I am most curious about going into Sunday…how does LJ mix with the new offense?

Thank god we don’t have to deal with Reggie Bush (ERR, Eric Metcalf). Not a big fan of his as a runner, but Brees relies so heavily on him to make those short, high percentage throws. I think without his Bushy security blanket that Brees will make some bad throws in the confines of Arrowhead. Enough for us to win a game? We’ll see.

It’s not of cataclysmic import, but ‘don’t’ bet your last dollar on listed measures…I don’t, any more than I think Croyle is 6′2 206 because that’s what’s ‘listed’. Height/weight measures are & have been notoriously unreliable - just as be scouts 40 times for players, actors/actresses massaged ages, etc. etc. - truth being in the means and via man behind measuring stick as it were…’little’ or ‘bigger’ white lies.

Noland ‘Supergnat’ Smith was listed at 5′8 163 as a Chiefs rookie…he was actually 5′6 1/2 154lbs. Otis Taylor listed as short as 6′2 to as tall as 6′4 in media releases of the day and 211-220 lbs. Otis told me he played at about 227 lbs., so just with these two examples proof how both height and weight can be bumnped up or down, as desired, and the rationale is many splendored - there are many more examples (Hank Stram’s date of birth Chiefs media guides annually listed his DOB as 1924 when in fact twas year of our Henry 1923- ’somehow’ it never got corrected over the years according to Hank/others (wink wink)…go figure.

Back to Thigpen’s height, as fate would have it I happen to measure 6′1 3/4 (& short as 6′1 1/2 via different doctors, etc.) I’ve had the opportunity to stand next to Tyler & Brodie Croyle …Thigpen is clearly shorter than me, Croyle is my vertical peer ‘at best’ if that, but no more.

Any way, as long as Thigpen keeps playing the way at 6′5 on the field no problem - but - 6′1 7/8 he is ‘not’ for the record, ‘The Little Big Man.’

(I happen to measure 6′1 3/4) I’ve seen you and your 5′11″ at the most.
