Chiefs Update 10/31

From the Truman Sports Complex

Good news for the Chiefs this week as they wrapped up their practice week with a 70-minute workout on Friday in the fall sunshine: RB Jamaal Charles is a go for Sunday.

“He looks good and that’s good for us,” Herm Edwards said on Friday.  Charles suffered a sprained ankle last Sunday against the Jets.

Bad news for the Chiefs: CB Brandon Flowers has come up lame with a foot injury and was limited in his practice work on Friday.

“He should play,” Edwards said of Flowers.

Defensively, the Chiefs will be scrambling at cornerback if Flowers cannot play or is limited.  Veteran Pat Surtain did not practice all week because of a quadriceps injury.  If Flowers cant’ play, that would put rookie Maurice Leggett on the field for the base defense and in the nickel, Tyron Brackenridge would be on the field as the third cornerback.  On Wednesday, Brackenridge wasn’t even on the roster, although he did play in 13 games last season.

Also in Friday’s practice work, LB Wes Dacus and S Jarrad Page were both limited in their participation because of groin injuries.

Larry Johnson was not at practice, nor was punter Dustin Colquitt  After practice, Colquitt said his injured groin feels better and he hopes to be back punting next week.

Man, I hope Flowers is okay. He and Carr are HUGE bright spots for the season, and I think they’re our future at that position.

Glad to hear that Charles has gutted out the injury. He’s a scrappy little guy, and I’m excited to see what he can do against the Tampa defense.

Here’s to the Chiefs torching Aquib Talib and the rest of the Bucs defense… we’re going to need to score some points this week.

And to anyone who was disappointed that Dorsey was dominated by Alan Faneca this week — you’re expecting too much. Alan Faneca is a legend at his positions and Dorsey is a rookie. I guarantee you it will be a better battle next time they play one another. Dorsey is just going to improve. He’s just a step or two late on each play right now… he’ll come around and he’ll be a freakin’ beast. Just like he was at LSU.

I agree Eli. Dorsey its to early for people to start calling Dorsey a bust. It usually takes defensive tackles out of college at least 2yrs to learn how to play the position on the NFL level. He has to learn how to just plug the whole and take on the double teams so that the line backers can make plays versus him trying to make a play at the line of scrimmage.

At this point I dont expect Dorsey to be a world beater, but I do expect him to stop the run.

These players need to stop ‘pulling their groin’…it wont lead to happy ending. :)

Man, no Surtain, Flowers and Page beat up….our secondary will be thin. Some scouts thought that Dejuan Morgan had the physical attributes to play some corner, provided he was covering a bigger possession receiver, which the Bucs have plenty of. I would hope we’ll see some formations with three safties out there. I’ll take my chances with a 3rd rounder (Morgan) and a savvy veteran (Jon McGraw) over Leggett and Brackenridge. I know those young CBs will have to get out there and play some as well, but Carr and Flowers have done great work this season so maybe the other youngsters will too.

If Flowers (and Surtain)are out, the Chiefs likely would have to take fewer chances and play less man-on-man. I like the 3 safety look; has interesting possibilities. Of course, shutting down Tampa’s rushing attack, and putting their quarterback in the dirt would cover up a depleted secondary, too. Barring that…I guess there’s the bend-but-don’t-break, hope (bet)-they-make-a-mistake-on the way to your red zone, philosophy. I always liked Brackenridge, but what’s he been up to since August?

Question of the day…is Pat Thomas really that bad? Or, is it just that he, too, is young and in a new position, playing behind the Chiefs rookie defensive line?

I was trying to think of an apt description of the Chiefs team full of rookies and others with little experience (especailly the D). They’re like…

Awkward teenagers, trying to look adult?
Puppies on a sugar high? A college team? No, I’m looking for amusing descriptions, not mean or negative.

    Anyone?
