Chiefs-Texans Pre-Game

From Reliant Stadium, Houston

10:00 a.m. CDT – Good morning from Houston. It’s a hot day here in south Texas, with temperatures at kickoff expected to be in the mid-80s. Right now, the roof on Reliant Stadium is open, but earlier in the week the Texans said the retractable top would be closed for the game. Don’t know if they’ve changed their mind, but the stadium sits north and south, so the sun will move around the north end of the stadium as the day goes on.

10:01 a.m. – Texans QB Matt Schaub is already out doing a throwing session with a few of his receivers. They began about 15 minutes ago.

10:02 a.m. – FB Mike Cox is dressed to play as he came onto the field. If so, it will be the first time Cox has been active this season. I don’t know if that’s any indication of the game plan, since Cox is not only a good blocker, but he’s a usually reliable receiver.

10:03 a.m. – Former Chiefs-now Texans SS Bernard Pollard is already on the field, doing some running and stopping to talk with several of his former teammates, including NT Ron Edwards.

10:04 a.m. – The quarterbacks converse, as Brodie Croyle and Tyler Palko stand at the 40-yard line and chat with Houston’s third QB Matt Leinart.

10:05 a.m. – It looks like FS Kendrick Lewis is a no go today. He’s out early walking the field dressed in a sweatsuit that inactive players wear on the sidelines. He’s joined by DE Tyson Jackson, who also looks like he’s going to be inactive today.

10:06 a.m. – Missing from the weekly QB-Receivers pre-pre-game routine is WR Chris Chambers. He suffered a finger injury on his right hand last Sunday and was listed as questionable on Friday. But the Chiefs reported he was a full participant through all three practices.

10:10 a.m. – A big group of Chiefs is standing near the goal line chatting it up with Bernard Pollard. Former teammates Brian Waters, Jamaal Charles and Dustin Colquitt are enjoying the conversation based on the obvious laughter coming out of their little huddle.

10:15 a.m. – As he does each week, OLB MikeVrabel has joined the pre-pre-game throwing session. Also part of the group is rookie WR Jeremy Horne; that maybe another indication that Chris Chambers won’t play today.

10:17 a.m. – With FS Kendrick Lewis looking like he’ll be one of the Chiefs inactive players today, that will put second-year S Donald Washington on the field in the Chiefs nickel/dime defensive set. Coordinator Romeo Crennel figures to go with a scheme similar to the one he used last week against the Colts, especially in the nickel. That would have FS Jon McGraw on the field as more of a linebacker than safety. Washington should come in then as the free safety.

10:23 a.m. – It’s not Dwayne Bowe with the pre-game drops, it’s Dexter McCluster. As the QBs and receivers finished out their session, McCluster dropped consecutive passes in the end zone. He finally got it right on the third throw.

10:33 a.m. – Inactive players for the Chiefs today are FS Kendrick Lewis, S Reshard Langford, LB Justin Cole,DE Alex Magee,  OT Ryan O’Callaghan, WR Chris Chambers and DE Tyson Jackson.

10:34 a.m. – Inactive players for the Texans today are WR Dorin Dickerson, CB Sherrick McManis, LB Darryl Sharpton, LB Xavier Adibi, LB Kevin Bentley, G Mike Brisiel and DE Jesse Nading. The inactive third QB for Houston is Matt Leinart.

10:50 a.m. – The Texans have just announced that the Reliant Stadium roof would be open for today’s game. Early last week they had announced it would be closed for the game. I guess it’s a good decision, given that the Army’s Golden Knight Parachute Team is going to be dropping into the stadium.

10:58 a.m. – With the roof open let’s recap the weather for today. It’s partly sunny, as some big puffy clouds have started to fill the Texas sky. Right now no chance of precepitation. Temperatures at kickoff expected to be in the mid-80s. Right now the northwest corner of the field and stands is getting direct sunlight, while the entire south side of the field and stands is in the shade.

11 a.m. – Kicking towards the south goal posts, K Ryan Succop was good from 51 yards. Kicking towards the north, he made a 49-yard kick. There appears to be no wind on the stadium floor.

11:02 a.m. – The only starter out of the Texans lineup is RG Mike Brisiel. He’s been replaced in the starting group by Antoine Caldwell.

11:03 a.m. – With Chris Chambers out of the starting lineup, figure that Terrance Copper will be the starter and Dexter McCluster’s snaps will increase in the offense.

11:33 a.m. – Chiefs have finished their pre-game period and there was nothing unusual about the work they did or the personnel they used.

11:35 a.m. – Ron Winter and his crew are the zebras for today’s game. Winter and his group tend to be very active in throwing the yellow hankies.

Well good to hear Horne will get some snaps at receiver hopefully he can provide a spark for this passing game. If Bowe can’t emerge as a #1 receving threat is unfair but Weis may need to surround the passing game around Moeaki. Its not fair to ask this guy in yr 1 to carry the passing game like Tony G use to, but its the life of the NFL sometimes. I think we can run the ball against these guys Giants got over 100 yards last week but I know Pollard is going to be 8th man in the box today. So play-action pass with a speedster like Horne this may be the week the passing game starts to attack down the field.

Castille is also inactive. I’m not sure what that means. I don’t think he was injured. Perhaps Cox is a better pass blocker. It could mean we plan to throw more or he simply want’s to get Cox some reps.

Sorry to see Magee inactive. Had hoped he would be an effective backup like last week. Not sure why Jackson has not reclaimed some role but can wait for him to completely heal. Hopefully the offense will gain from changes.

All Cassel had to do was put it on Moeaki’s numbers. Game over. Instead… Can’t wait for that beer, brother. I need to ask a question for this to make an “Ask Bob”, don’t I?
