Chiefs Report 9/28
From the Truman Sports Complex
There are changes coming with the Chiefs as they lick their wounds from Sunday’s loss to the Eagles and get ready for the visit of the Giants this weekend.
On the team’s depth chart released on Monday, Ryan O’Callaghan is now listed as the starter at right tackle. For the first three games, Ikechuku Ndukwe was the starter there.
And the depth chart also now lists Ron Edwards as the starter at nose tackle. Edwards opened the game against the Eagles. Tank Tyler had been the starter there for the first two games.
There may be more. Speaking on Monday, head coach Todd Haley also indicated that rookies ILB Jovan Belcher and CB Donald Washington could become major parts of the defensive effort. Belcher played with the starters in the base defense through the second half, replacing Corey Mays. In the nickel defense, Washington was inserted into the nickel back role in place of Maurice Leggett after Philly’s DeSean Jackson scored on a 64-yard touchdown pass.
On the injury front, Haley said the Chiefs would be very careful this week with the hamstring injury of WR Dwayne Bowe. Bowe is unlikely to practice on Wednesday, but may be able to get ready for action by the weekend.Â
Haley expects ILB Derrick Johnson to practice on Wednesday. Johnson missed all of practice last week and Sunday’s game with the Eagles because of the groin injury he suffered against the Raiders.

FINAL SCORE SUNDAY:
NYG 44 chiefs 10
what exactly does that have to do with the article?
0-8 on the way toward perdition as in 0-20…
which hurts our feelings? no….
seems like you are the only person who cares enough to try to beat a horse while its down.
have fun with all that rin…the hate and anger inside of you won’t go away, you know that.
This is going to be a tough game against the Giants. To bad we can’t replace Goff at right guard he’s been a huge disappointment as well.
while he is at it he should sit johnson. obvioulsy johnson has lost several steps. charles ran the ball alot harder and faster in my opinion.
I think Monty needs to be demoted. Did anybody see him lolly gagging around on the slant to DeSean that he took to the house? He assumed Leggett was making the tackle and avoided contact. As a linebacker you are responsible for defending the slant, he should have lit him up. Very irritated about that play.
It shows we are not tenacious enough on D.
Rin loves His Chiefs! Alas, He hates what
&
have turned them into… mere chiefs
First, I don’t envy Haley. Did you see how he looked in his postgame talk? He looked totally drained. I hope he doesn’t burn out because, despite the year so far, I still think he and Pioli are the ones to turn the thing around. It is going to take some time and a lot of work, though.
Yep. I agree with the changes Bob mentioned. I think Tank might be better with fewer snaps, and Edwards is a good space eater. But, the changes shouldn’t stop there.
Nduke should slide to right guard, his natural position, replacing Goff. Alleman should go in place of Niswanger. Goff and Niswanger aren’t getting anything done in run blocking or pass protection. If Alleman isn’t ready, go with W.Smith at center. Albert and Waters haven’t been playing great, but the others…man, let someone else try. It’s embarrassing…on runs, after the play, you see a handful of Chiefs standing at the LS looking bewildered as three or four defenders are on top of the ballcarrier or QB before they’ve had a chance to take a couple steps. Wow.
Also agree that LJ’s role should be greatly reduced. Charles, Savage and Battle give the team a better shot. If and when the Chiefs ever get a lead to protect, LJ might be used to grind out some yards. Not even sure about that. The line will have to be playing much, much better for LJ to be effective at this point. He doesn’t have much speed left, and these days he needs more room to get going. He just doesn’t look right to me.
Bradley make some nice plays at WR, but also does a couple bonehead things every game. Wade and Bowe definitely should be the starters. I think they should keep Bradley, but not start him. It’s time Lawrence gets more chances at WR and KR. No one is going to do anything on kick returns, though, until there’s better blocking. It’s hard to judge the WR and TE’s, and QB for that matter, when the line is playing that terrible.
On the DL, ready or not, Gilberry and Magee are going to have to play more. Dorsey and Jackson, in great shape or not, are wearing down too much. They need to be fresher. Go out and find another DE, especially if Gilberry can’t get it done.
Obviously, the linebacker play ain’t good. They need DJ in there and playing the way he can. Mays has dropped off tremendously. Williams isn’t cutting it. Maybe Belcher can do something. Hali has made a valiant effort at becomming a LB, and I think he can become very good. Right now, he might be better off if he got taken out on first down. Maybe someone like P. Walters could go in on obvious running downs for awhile; alittle more stout. Maybe Vrabel should share more time with Studebaker. I don’t know, but if you’re playing a 3-4, your linebacker have to make more plays. They need to be in the opposition backfield or, at least, get to the ball carrier near the line of scrimmage. Jeeze, every play they’re making tackles, 3, 4, 5 plus yards down the field. Same with the DB’s, especially the safties; how bout some run support.
Now that I think about it, there’s only so much you can do. Keep tinkering and moving guys around to see what you can get. Grab anyone you can that might be able to help. Keep coaching them up. Bottom line, I know this team just needs more players. They have to hit FA and the draft hard next year. My hope for this year is merely that the team can become respectable, and identify which guys can form a nucleus to build around.
I’d be interested to know what others think. If you could only keep 8 guys from each side of the ball, plus 3 specialists, from this team who would they be? You can think of 8, wiseguys.
Offense-Cassel, Croyle, Bowe, Albert, Waters, Charles, Wade, Cottam.
Defense-Dorsey, Jackson, DJ, Magee, Flowers, Carr, Morgan, Washington.
Specialists-Succop, Colquitt, Lawrence
Johnson has NO-NONE– NADA , ZIP in his step Seyes he is a can do guy , with the Eagles def. doing a big HO-HO-HO !!!!
Need to put last year’s Tigpen run and shoot ,Tyler has nothing to loose and is not bad at hitting Bowe when he pull’s the safty’s up on his 7-8 yard running treath ????
Tyler was KC’S most productive RB – last year .
LOVE TO SEE KC SUPRIZE NY
No risk , SO ?
Every hand off to Johnson is not any driffent than SPIKING the ball , one more nail each hand off in going dead on three and out .
How much is Tyson Jackson make ? Diden’t he sign late , and was big time in college , maybe he is going to make ALL the tackles in one game .
Has he made one yet , a sack , thats a draft choice that could have been Mark Sanchez . Sorry the dude has done NOTHING , or am I lying .
Bad beak for the team
LJ has not gotten it done for years. Of course…our O’line has not gotten it done for years. Anyway…..LJ was good when we had an O’line and he was competing against Priest. Now he is the man and our O’line is weak. One yard here – two there….and then LJ breaks out for a long 3 occasionally. Wow….what a job LJ and this O’line are doing huh?
With an O’line that can’t stop anybody we need a big back that can move the football with people hanging on him….many people….or a back that has quick feet and fancy moves to make people miss. LJ just runs into people and falls down…..for negative or no gain or at most 3 yards. That just won’t cut it.
I am a pile of diarrhea.
If they’re going to replace Ndukwe at RT they should move him inside to RG. My guess is he’d be an improvement.
No RB in NFL history could be effective with the feeble blocking we saw Sunday.
The skill people get a pass as far as I’m concerned until the guys up front actually do something to justify their paychecks.
I’m so sick of people thinking they see a lack of effort from LJ. The guy is a very good back and has not lost anything. He is not a scat back that can make moves in the backfield. He is a downhill runner that needs the initial hole. I constantly see him pushing forward for at least a yard or two despite all the contact and penetration this o-line allows.. yet on the radio and in forums people claim they see a lack of effort or he doesnt have it.
Will Shields today on 810WHB was asked this very question by two promoters of the LJ is done crowd (steven st. john and his sidekick nate).
Will’s response: LJ RAN HARD. There’s nothing there for him to run thru. When he had any holes he made yards.

Agree. Here’s an outsider’s view, from yesterday’s Philadelphia Daily News:
“* If you just looked at his rushing numbers Sunday – 7 carries for 3 yards in the first half, 38 yards on 19 carries for the game – it’d be easy to conclude that Chiefs running back Larry Johnson doesn’t have much gas left in his tank. But Johnson is a north-south power runner who needs to get to the line of scrimmage with a head of steam, and he seldom was able to do that Sunday as the Eagles continually got penetration into the Chiefs backfield. On a first-and-20 run by Johnson on the Chiefs’ first possession, Eagles d-linemen Brodrick Bunkley and Trent Cole both already were three yards into the backfield when Johnson took the handoff from Matt Cassel. They collaborated to drop Johnson for a one-yard loss.”
Still, if the O line can’t open holes then LJ isn’t much good to the Chiefs at the RB position. A quick slasher might do better.
I feel ILL whenever I watch the Chiefs play.
