Chiefs Get Smacked Again By NFC East

From Arrowhead Stadium

For the second week in a row, the Chiefs got a taste of NFC East football.

And for the second week in a row, they got punched in the face. This time the New York Giants provided the whipping, taking a 27-16 victory that was not nearly as close as that score indicates. Two fourth-quarter TDs by the Chiefs made it somewhat respectable.

Gives this to the Chiefs: they did not give up. They were playing from behind on the scoreboard from the game’s start. But just as they were last week in Philadelphia, the Chiefs were never in a position to win this game. They cannot compete with a team like the Giants, now 4-0 on the season. Tom Coughlin’s team went 3-0 on three-game road trip to Dallas, Tampa and Kansas City.

That’s hard for any team to do, but the Giants have no problems playing away from home. They are now 19-4 in their last 23 road games.

“We knew this would be a tough stretch against some very good opponents,” Todd Haley said. “This is obviously the worst-case scenario. We are where we are. We’ve got to stick together and start becoming a team.

“We’ve got to be better in all areas that’s clear: offense, defense, kicking game.

“Our sideline operation needs to improve; we wasted a time out. We have a big job and we are going to continue working.”

The first quarter of the season is over and it’s hard to find a spot where the Chiefs have shown obvious signs of improvement. They allowed 429 yards of offense to the Giants, while getting just 193 on their own. They gave up five sacks, while getting two of their own. They were again dreadful on third down, converting just two of 15 chances to move the sticks.

OK, maybe fourth down is their down; the Chiefs converted three of four fourth downs and on the season they are eight of 11, or 72.7 percent.

“They rushed the ball too much against us (156 yards at 4.7 yards per carry) and we were awful o n third down again,” said Haley.

Mistakes dotted the Chiefs first half performance and helped the Giants, a team that needs no extras when traveling as they are now 19-4 on the road since the 2007 season. Former Chiefs kicker Lawrence Tynes sent the game’s opening kickoff to the six-yard line where Charles grabbed the ball and returned it to the 20, but then inexplicably fumbled. New York LB Bryan Kehl recovered at the Chiefs 16-yard line.

‘I put our team in a hole right off the bat,” said Charles. “That’s something I can’t do in that situation. That’s just bad.”

Manning needed five plays to get the game’s first score, throwing a three-yard TD pass to WR Steve Smith at the back of the end zone, where he got away from SS Mike Brown and CB Brandon Flowers. Tynes PAT kick made it 7-0 and the Giants never trailed from there.

The Chiefs defense provided an opportunity when OLB Tamba Hali came off the corner of the Giants protection, beating LT Kareem McKenzie and knocking the ball out of Manning’s hands. DE Glenn Dorsey recovered the fumble and Kansas City had possession at the Giants 36-yard line.

Johnson carried for eight, seven, five and no yards, before a Cassel pass to WR Bobby Engram was incomplete in the end zone. K Ryan Succop nailed the 34-yard FG and the Chiefs were on the board, trailing 7-3

The defense got the ball back again, when a Manning pass to WR Mario Manningham went through the receiver’s hands, skipped off his shoulder pads and landed in the arms of Flowers. The Chiefs offense could make nothing of that gift, gaining five yards on three plays and failing again to convert on third down.

After Dustin Colquitt’s punt, Manning and the Giants offense took over at their 29-yard line. They needed just five plays to score another touchdown, as Manning again connected with Smith, this time for 25 yards. New York got help from the zebras on that drive as Chiefs safety Jarrad Page was hit with a 15-yard unnecessary roughness call when he smacked Smith while the receiver was in the air trying to make a catch. The Tynes PAT gave New York a 14-3 lead.

The rest of the first half was back and forth until the Giants took over with one minute, 49 seconds to play before intermission. Starting at his own 13-yard line, Manning moved New York down the field to the Chiefs seven-yard line, and as time ran out, Tynes kicked a 25-yard FG to make the score 17-3 at half-time.

Having blown the advantage of getting the opening kickoff, the Chiefs opened the second half trying to get the ball back. Succop’s onside kick attempt traveled the necessary 10 yards, but Kehl fell on the ball first, giving New York possession at the Chiefs 42-yard line. Eight plays later, Tynes kicked a 40-yard FG and the Giants lead was now 20-3.

Early in the fourth quarter, New York pushed the margin to 27-3 on a 54-yard touchdown pass from Manning to rookie WR Hakeem Nicks. The play was a harmless wide receiver screen, but Nicks got a block, Page over ran the play, and the first-round draft choice out of North Carolina was off down the sidelines. The only Chiefs defender with a shot at him was CB Maurice Leggett about the 10-yard line. But Nicks slowed down and Leggett flew right past him and the TD was on the board.

A big 53-yard kickoff return by Charles set up the Chiefs offense with good field position and they took advantage. While it was not the prettiest of drives, Cassel got them in the end zone, throwing a one-yard TD pass to TE Sean Ryan that capped a –play, -yard possession. The Chiefs went for two points, but Cassel’s run failed to reach the end zone.

When the Chiefs offense got the ball back, Cassel and Ryan hooked up on a 43-yard completion that took the ball down to the New York six-yard line. From there, it took them eight plays to score as they converted a pair of fourth down plays, the last being a one-yard TD pass from Cassel to WR Bobby Wade. Succop’s PAT kick set the score at 27-16.

Manning suffered a bruised right heel on the series where Nicks scored and was replaced by backup David Carr, who struggled to get anything going with the New York offense. Not that much was necessary at that point, as even the two Chiefs touchdowns only made the score look respectable.

After Haley was wiping the slate clean after the game. He believes in dividing up the season in four quarters and after going 0-4 in the first quarter, he’s ready to move on and see if the second quarter can be better.

“The second quarter of the season starts tomorrow and we’ve got the Dallas Cowboys coming to town,” said Haley. “We are 0 and 0. We’ve got to stick together as a team, which I think our guys are doing very well. We’ve got to pull together and starting becoming a team.”

    - DOH! Like Pooter in “Uncle Buck” that John Candy nailed in the honker, went down like a clown…

“a 27-16 victory that was not nearly as close as that score indicates.”

    - exactly… and this year the losses aren’t even as close as those ‘08 Chiefs Herm’s. Progress? No.

“Two fourth-quarter TDs by the Chiefs made it somewhat respectable.”

    - pity points; Giants just went into hibernation mode and ran out the clock…chiefs powerless to stop them…

“just as they were last week in Philadelphia, the Chiefs were never in a position to win this game.”

    - yes…from the opening fumbled kickoff to the final gun… another mismatch.

“They cannot compete with a team like the Giants, now 4-0 on the season.”

    - or any other by the evidence; the Cowboys come to town next with a victory theirs gift-wrapped; it’s gonna be ugly that final score…

“They rushed the ball too much against us (156 yards at 4.7 yards per carry) and we were awful o n third down again” said Haley.”

    - cue Dion sans his Belmonts, post 2009 season:

“Anybody here, seen my old friend Clancy…can you tell me where he’s gone?” Thrown under the bus by

    “We are 0 and 0.”

    - au contraire, no do-overs – you are 0-8 ‘check’…

“We’ve got to stick together as a team, which I think our guys are doing very well.”

    - “got to” alas ‘can’t'; as Hank Stram was once heard to say afore – “there was too much seepage on that play boys…too much seepage.”

“We’ve got to pull together and starting becoming a team.”

    - well that contradicts what you just said – just said they’re “sticking” together, yet now you say they must “pull” together…which is it? Make up your mind- Rin is as confused as a coached WR in training camp…

Haley has to take the heat for the poor offensive start. He’s the play caller. Coming out in the wildcat was ridiculous to start the game. Then getting into shotgun on the goal-line late in the game instead of running the ball with LJ who was having a good day when being able to get to the line of scrimmage. Haley has to do a better jobs of getting better yardage on 1st and 2nd down. Thats his job. He didn’t get the ball in Bowe hands. Didn’t find a way to get the balls in Charles hands on offense either. SCreen plays to slow Sean Ryan. The defense actually played well enough to win but when the offense is consistently going 3 and out its hard for any defense to hold a good offense.

  • October 4, 2009  - Larry says:

larry thinks the chiefs will get it together, and soon!

The chiefs have shown much growth so far this season in areas that severely lacked prior. While the offense has regressed, the defense ( our main concern last year) has stepped up into respectable levels.

Larry is NOT confused as to what it takes to win, and knows that change is hard and painful sometimes, but almost always worth it.

  • October 4, 2009  - Rin says:

This is the worst start since 1980 at 0-4 regular season – will tie the worst all-time 0-5 start by Paul Wiggin in 1977 with next week’s pre-ordained loss to DALL; too, they are already WORST EVER at 0-8 and counting pre.

Stars? Not the ones KC sees aft getting clobbered weekly, rather the oppositions – while BALT had a QB in Flacco, OAK none of note, PHILY none really & NY Giants QB Manning/RB Jacobs if we’re feeling gratuitous, DALL will bring a QB in Romo, a RB in Barber, a TE in Witten & a couple WRs in Williams & Crayton PLUS an offensive line … this will be the best offense KC has faced this year.

The Broncos are 4-0…obviously they’re no fluke based on their game vs DALL today, Denver. Alas, KC is not as DEN…home or not. DALL will be as our own #27 once: lean, mean, fightin’ machine.

DALL on D more than up to shutting down KC’s pop gun attack. DeMarcus Ware v Branden Albert et al our offensive line? Ware’s been double & triple teamed in ‘09. Newman on Bowe? And the rest DALL vs Ryan, Wade and…and…0(h) & 9 the humanity!

The ‘62 Lenny Dawson led Texans could beat these Cowboys but not the ‘09 caricatures. Believe Rin when He taketh no joy stating a non-rose colored glasses obvitude… we are DOOMED.

At this point, it’s hard to see much to be enthused about with this team, and sarcasm aside from Rin, the chiefs’ self-promotion of Larry Johnson is REALLY annyoing, when LJ only ran well when he was angry about Vermeil’s diaper comment. 2.5 yards per carry? Get real…

Of course, another top five draft pick on the way (I’m assuming we may be tied with one or two teams in the end, and as always, lose the toss)…well, that is something to look forward to at least…(maybe????)

  • October 4, 2009  - Rodeo John says:

Ha ha ha…Cowboys will bring the best Offense the Chiefs have faced to date…ha ha ha…Rin you are the joker. Literally.

Rin is confused. No surprise here. He stated as much in his first post.

O-line looked better today. Still not great by any means, but improvements made. Callaghan is an improvement.

Someone points to worse start since this year or that…but based off the rest of the schedule for our beloved Chiefs, we will still finish better than the 2008 Chiefs and have the possibility of winning more games than the 2007 Chiefs.

Shoot, I would rather start out rough like this and finish with some wins vice what the Chiefs did in 2007, losing 9 straight….makes you wonder why they were so bad in 2008…and of course the trend had started….good thing we have the management personnel in there now to make changes and who will turn this team around.

    How about those facts?

Dallas bringing a good offense. They looked pitiful against the Broncos today. Bottom line I thought the Chiefs wouldn’t get that first win until Redskins game but after watching Dallas play I’m positive it will come against them. Dallas are not as explosive on offense minus TO. Their only explosive player Felix Jones is hurt. Dallas are the 3rd best team in the NFC east and will miss the playoffs Wade Phillps will be gone at the end of the year.

  • October 4, 2009  - Chiefs Fan 82 says:

Agreed John. ED, Haley does need to improve however, it’s not on him when receivers dont make catches. There was at least 5 drop passes, 3 on Bowe. They did try to get him the ball. And I wouldn’t have given Charles the ball either after being such a moron on the opening kickoff. I’d like to see Savage in next week.

  • October 4, 2009  - Rodeo John says:

    John: Hey Rin.

    Rin: Yes John?

John: What was the win-loss record of the 2006 Chiefs?

Rin: Why John, the great Herm Edwards led the 2006 Chiefs to 9-7 record. Plus they went to the play-offs!

John: Yes, but didn’t they lose the first game in that post season?

    Rin: Umm…well…yes.

John: Ok, so what was that record again in 2007?

Rin: Umm, well Coach Edwards guided them to a 4-12 record.

John: So you mean to tell me that the 2d year of Edwards coaching the team, that had gone to the post season the year prior did WORSE? Say it ain’t so Rin! Do you think it was the coaching or the players?

Rin: Well, truth be told…I can’t honestly answer that one without looking at the next years results.

John: So what were those results for 2008 Rin?

Rin: Well, umm, yeah, about that…the players must have not responded well to the type of coaching that was taking place because they got worse and only went 2-14.

John: Ok, so with all that Rin, would you expect that team to make a drastic improvement the next year? Even if Clark Hunt had brought in Marty? Do you think Marty could have turned the team around in 1 year? Pick any coach you would like Rin…they would be facing the same quagmire.

Rin: Well John, I just like to antogonize people. I really don’t like the Chiefs, or so I make it appear that way. Nor will I ever look at anything the Chiefs do objectively. I will continue to maintain my bias and hatred of the current regime.

John: Well Rin, you do that…but understand that those of us around here don’t mind pointing out what is bad with em, but we also like to find things that they are improving on. I also think that Mr Gretz even tries, from time to time, find things that the Chiefs improve on. So with all that said…

It will be great when in 3 years with the team that Coach Haley will be taking this team to the post season playoffs and turning this team around. At least I am gonna give him 3 years to do something, just like his predecessor had.

    John

2008 Chiefs: 16.3 pts. per game an 1-3 start; the 2-2 pre added in 15.4 per overall 3-5 – this with Herm Edwards.

2009 chiefs: 16.0 pts. per game via an 0-4 start; (subtract the 7 pts. a blocked punt becomes 14.3, the 0-8 overall mark considered but 13.3 pts. per – THIS courtesy the new offensive guru, Superbowl

Herm better in every way than ‘check’…all barbs aside nothing else says it with so much certainty!

Yeah, Charles should have been sittin after that dropped ball. I think they tried to play Bowe to soon…did you notice him pull up as he was making his way to the end zone. Had he been healthy he would have made that catch.

Would like to see Cassel make a little better throws to the guys. But yeah, if it is hittin them in the hands they should be coming up with the ball.

I didn’t count em, but it appeared as if we had less penalties this time around…That penalty on Jarrad Page was complete crap! Totally bad call and it was evident…Vrabel was getting vocal as well with the refs.

I think we are improving, however slowly. The important thing to remember is that it isn’t like Todd Haley took over a SB contender team and they started performing like this. Some around here act like he was gonna make this team a SB contender within the first 4 games here.

Yeah John I noticed Bowe kind of pull up on that route. I also think that pass to Engram in the end zone could’ve been caught had he been more agressive when we had to settle for the field goal. It is funny those fans who have their ridiculously high expectations this year. Seeing the Broncos do so well is agonizing but McDaniels would be in the same situation had he not been relieving a very good coach in Shanahan. Was glad to see him go. Unfortunately for Haley he inherited a team that Herm was in control of for the past 3 years, so there is a lot of make-up work to do. I would like to see an improvement in defensive cord. after this season. I feel there was not very much to choose from when they finally got Haley in house. I do feel this is much to be optimistic about. Am excited for these next 3 weeks.

  • October 4, 2009  - Rodeo John says:

Well gee Rin, thanks for pointing out the obvious that you can manipulate statistics to prove any particular point you want.

For example you like to throw in the preseason when it helps you out, but will conveniently leave them out if it doesn’t…oh yeah, like goin 0-4 preseason 2007!

Riddle me this Rin…over all win-loss record during the REGULAR SEASON…or any stat that proves what ever point it is that you are trying to make to show your biased hatred of the current management?

I want to know if you are a betting man Rin. You stated the other day that the chiefs will go 0-16 this season. I want to make a bet with you on that one. Are you so certain? Are you? Or are you just full of hot air?

    I think the latter.

Even if the chiefs win several games Rin will twist the record to reflect the refs winning the game or some other childish stunt I’ve seen him do in his posts.

Oh we definitely have a lot to look forward to. I believe we will still finish 5-11 or 6-10.

I agree, we need to get Romeo Crennel in here. Man would do a ton better than Pendegrast has to date.

I honestly believe Pioli is going to leave our o-line alone for a little bit and see how they gel. I wouldn’t mind moving aldukwe to guard, and goff to center. Niswanger is not gettin it done all that well. Defense is better than last year. And it is going to get better, just needs a little more time. This team will really be coming into it’s own by the end of this season, which will be good because that is when the GM and HC will really know what they need to do to fill the gaps.

We will be in the post season by 2011.

  • October 4, 2009  - REAL Chiefs Fan says:

Yeah, Rodeo John, I found it weird that Biesel gets cut for one bonehead play and Charles gets multiple chances after throwing the game away on the first play. Charles really sucked hte air out of the stadium.
Overall, I think, while the outcome was teh same, there were some bright spots:
    1. Larry Johnson rad angry – and had holes to run through.
    2. O Line kept Cassel upright for most of the game – until NY had the game in hand and went stat hunting.
    3. Run defense did not give up any big plays
    4. Pass rush improved against a stud O Line.
    5. Carr and Flowers made some big time plays.
    6. Fewer penalties.
    7. You can’t deny that they did execute under pressure by converting three 4th downs. They can execute, they just can’t do it consistently, yet.

    Bad stuff:
    1. Bad play calling from Haley – Case in point – 1st and goal from the 2 and he doesn’t hammer the ball in? Bewildering. Why did Haley abandon the run so readily? Or, Pendergast rushing three in ht ebeginning of the game? No wonder we don’t get sacks.
    2. Pass defense across the middle of the field giving up big plays. Where were the safeties?
    3. Late game run blocking. How many Giants came through untouched?
    4. Cassel was clearly rattled and had happy feet late. He threw some baaaaaddd passes. I’m losing a little faith in Matt. But, he’ll get better when his supporting cast does.
    5. Dropped passes all over the place. We could not exploit the Giants wounded secondary.

But, overall, for a rebuilding team, they have some leverage to build on. Some players stepped up and responded to last week’s feable experience. I think Dallas has too many good players to be beat two weeks in a row by the AFC West, but, they are more prone to lapses than NY is. I’ll stay optimistic, as always.

The defense has improved dramatically over last yr. Their actually wrapping up on tackles. Offensively their were some drops out there I give you guys that but their were also some questionable play-calling throughout the game. Especially in the first half. Haley has to find away to get more yards on 1st and 2nd down. To keep this team out of 3rd and longs. I do feel we can still win abou 6 to 9 games. To me it comes down to can we get the first win against Cowboys or Redskins.

The Cowboys are not by any means the Giants. They have horrible receiving core. Good run game and front seven, but their o-line is overrated and so is their secondary. They beat themselves alot with penalties and bad throws from Romo. This is a team we can actually beat come Sunday. I stand by what i’ve been saying all year. IF we can win 3games between now the bye we have ac chance at the division. The Broncos are now about to face some real contenders in the NFL and their true colors will show. We have beatable teams second half of the schedule. We just have to get some wins in the first half. The Cowboys, Redskins, and Charger are not contenders at all. Neither are they good teams. We if we can get this next game against the Cowboys it will give us good confidence going into the next 2 games.

Sorry but some of you guys were not watching the Chiefs vs. Giants. Over 400 yards given up by the Chiefs defense by the 3rd qtr. Offense scored 2 tds with the pass and could not run 3 yard in two attempts. Punting is starting to fall apart. New starters, nothing special and old starter inactive. Denver’s 3-4 works and KC’s Pendergas 3-4 flops. Next win? Maybe not in 09.

The Chiefs are not as good at this point as they were at the end of last season, period. Stats give a better picture than scores. If Pioli would leave it alone they could get better and be respectable by the end of the season. I don’t care who Pioli brings in at this point or where he finds them he will not make this team better with a revolving door. He needs to leave them together so they have a chance to gel as a team. This season is looking more and more like a tryout.

Well in Herm’s defense he inherited a team who had just lost there pro-bowl end Roaf in 2006 and the starting QB green, then they lost in 2007 there pro-bowl RG Shields I blame that for the offensive collapse, then in 2008 they let Wiegmann go (boneheaded personnel move by Herm), the chiefs effectively lost their run game at that point…

Now to say the defense looks better is the wrong assessment, they have already given up more offensive yardage in two games then the chiefs have allowed last year, the chiefs never allowed 400 yards of offense last year. This year that’s two games they have allowed, it’s a good thing the chiefs have played the raiders or it would look alot worse.

Did any of you see Dallas running the ball yesterday? Barber is the real deal, I dont know what all the talk is about Jones, Choice also is a pretty decent running back, if the chiefs can’t stop the run they might not even need “Homo” to throw the ball. Now, what Denver did to Dallas is unbelievable, I really wanted to see Denver get smashed by thier first NFC East team, but it didn’t happen. Their defense definately looks good with Dawkins running the show in the secondary, their defensive players were flying around making hits, diving for balls, just active, ours not so much…
