Chiefs Designate Bowe Franchise Player

As expected, the Chiefs designated WR Dwayne Bowe as their franchise player Monday afternoon.

NFL teams had until 3 p.m. CST to use the franchise tag on a soon to be free agent. The Chiefs announced their decision about 15 minutes ahead of that deadline. “We felt it was in the best interest of the Kansas City Chiefs to place the tag on Dwayne,” GM Scott Pioli said according to the team.

The Chiefs named Bowe a non-exclusive franchise player. While it effectively takes him out of the market that will begin next week, he can negotiate with the other 31 NFL teams. If any of those teams wanted to sign him, they would have to give the Chiefs compensation in the form of a pair of No. 1 draft choices.

Bowe will receive a franchise contract tender from the Chiefs of approximately $9.5 million for the 2012 season. The moment he signs that offer, the money is guaranteed for the season.

He has played through five NFL seasons on his original NFL contract, signed after he was the team’s first round selection in the 2007 NFL Draft. Since then, he’s played in 75 games with 70 starts. The LSU product has caught 356 passes for 4,927 yards and 36 touchdown catches.

Two other wide receivers have been tagged this year: New England’s Wes Welker and Philadelphia’s DeSean Jackson.

Oh God, I hope somebody wants him bad enough. The Saints (obviously they are not) deserve him.

Hope Bowe at least gets Haley a nice token of appreciation for really kicking his tail & getting him to change the attitude & put in the work it took to perform as he did to put himself in this position.

I guess this mean the Chiefs are not worse off than last year. If the walking wounded return, we could be pretty good. Of course, there is always the possibility the extra Hunt money could land a free agent or two.

Tim, I fully agree. Scary thing is how Bowe will act without Haley.

Good move. If someone gives him silly money we get two #1′s.
Bowe will remember how Romeo benched him the 1st quarter vs. Green Bay.

He’s one more good target we’ve kept on our team to get us to prime time. When does prime time happen? At night. When does night occur? PM. follow my thinking. Bring PM on and let the fun begin!
