Chiefs Add Another Free Agent

The Chiefs announced on Friday that they had agreed to terms free agent linebacker Corey Mays.

In three NFL seasons, Mays has played in 32 games with one start in three seasons with New England (2006-07) and Cincinnati (2007-08).

He would have been a restricted free agent this season, but the Bengals did not retain their rights to him with a tender offer and he became a free agent with no compensation issues.

At 6-1, 245 pounds, Mays has largely been a special teams player, and he’s done that duty quite well, producing 38 tackles in the kicking game. He will be 26 years old in late November. The Chicago native played at Notre Dame where he appeared n 46 games for the Fighting Irish. He was the team’s starting middle linebacker as a senior and had 12 tackles and a sack in his final college game in the Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State.

Mays signed as a college free agent with the Patriots, was released on the final cutdown and was added to the practice squad. He was promoted to the active roster for the final eight games and contributed to New England’s efforts in the ’06 post-season.

In ’07 he went to camp with the Patriots and made the opening day roster. But he was released on October 1 and claimed on waivers by the Bengals. He appeared in 11 games with Cincinnati in ’07 and followed that up with 12 games in ’08.

Last year he contributed five tackles and one forced fumble to the Bengals defense and 13 tackles in the kicking game.

Did you hear about Clancy being named the DC Bob? It was over at the Star today…

I just saw that too. Not very comforting for our defense. Sounds an awful lot like our Vermeil days. Kind of underwhelming. I almost think it would be better to try to get a Steelers assistant or Baltimore or Philly to run the D than a guy who didn’t cut it before….

I agree. I’m hoping that he’s just a stopgap. They might have kept him in this position because he’s had experience with both the 3-4 and the 4-3 while running the hybrid over in AZ. Maybe he will learn from his mistakes? I’m crossing my fingers…

Pender-aghast…and that defense had some players over there…do you think Haley can back up his “we can get 22 guys off the street and go 2-12″ comment?

I’m just hoping we have the right coaching staff in place to make the right 53 better. I can’t tell you how disappointed I was when I heard we kept Krumrie. Lets hope he was severely hamstrung by Herms zone coverage and has something different up his sleeve with this new D we’re installing (whatever that may be).

The Chiefs should hire Fred Arbanas to run their defense.

    SOMEONE PLEASE RESPOND IMPORTANT:

I don’t know if anyone read that Jay Glazer article about how he thought adam pacman jones looked to him like a changed man. I kind of started to believe it.

I feel like signing some crazy ass talent like Pacman Jones would be GREAT for the chiefs. This guy will be making the minimum salary and he would be surrounded by good people. I think most of the people in the Chiefs organization and the team are not attention getters like Jerry Jones and Al Davis and the like.

We could benefit from a guy like Jones. What do we have to lose. Absolutely nothing. We have everything to gain. This guy can do nickel and return kicks and punts. With the right mindset he may go back to the skills he used to have in Tennessse

Pacman Jones is no Fred Arbanas.

His contract would have to be LOADED with escape clauses for the Chiefs, in case he reverted to his old ways. Then again, the Chiefs need to take a few risks…

    - by the name of Corey Mays, who plays nee looks like Bob Marley…Jamaica man, Jamaica.

That’s what we need – the ultimate customer for KC’s strip club scene. C’mon guys – let’s have some more solid ideas.

Do the season ticket packages have a refund policy if the team finishes in the bottom 3 in the league in defense again this year?

  • March 13, 2009  - Alex K says:

    Why is everyone so negative?

    Seriously…

Football mastermind and YOUNG executive Scott Pioli is running the show

Young ,tough, hard nosed, Todd Haley is the head coach

we traded for what some consider to be a top 5-8 QB in the NFL for a 2nd round pick(regardless of compensation, last year makes him a Solid QB)

And people complain about the DC, who happened to lead the Cards last year?

Do people not understand that STATS, in terms of TOTAL YARDs, it totally bogus, Arizona was in shootout after shootout, giving many possessions to opponents….if you want to write him off, then thats just ridiculous…

SUPER BOWL DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR…regardless of what people want to say….how many other DC’s can say that about the 08 season? 1…

  • March 13, 2009  - anonymous says:

“mastermind” – suggests choice aquaramus nee igno Chilean sea bass – tastes like chicken but smells like crappie- but you can call him searchmepiolee.

“Young tough”…sounds like a punk, acts like one, must be one…check…checkpoint hailee.

    “we traded for what”

    - ‘flotsam’ aka cassel, and ‘jetsam’ aka vrabel; cassel & vrabel – sounds like a comedy team … bet it plays like one too.

“And people complain about the DC”

    - count me in, I always preferred Marvel.

    Chuck Diesel

If it looks like a duck, and it walks like a duck, and it quacks like a duck it must be a duck. With that in mind I really do not see how any TEAM, coach, or GM could consider PacMan Jones as a good addition to their TEAM. He does not have the discipline required at this level. Nor is he a leader, nor is he a good follower. If he was any of those then why are there so many allegations against him. “Can’t play with him, can’t coach him, can’t win with him, can’t do it, won’t do it” (paraphrase from Coach Singletary)
This is only my opinion, I have been wrong before and I am sure I will be wrong again. I say no to any notions of PacMan, or any player of the same behavior styles, coming to our TEAM. He is not one of the right 53.
It is all about the TEAM……and…………
    THE RIGHT 53 2009

The Chiefs will not sign a player like Adam Jones. Never have…and never will. End of story. Somebody will give this guy a second…no, third…uh, is it fourth?…chance…but it won’t be us.

Well with Pendergast as DC the chiefs hopefully bring in the high flying circus which was the Vermiel offense, they were in a lot of shootouts also, but couldn’t out shoot the colts in the playoffs because of the lack of D.
