Brodie Produces Everything But A Victory
From Baltimore, Maryland
In the end, there’s only one statistic that Brodie Croyle cares about.
And after the Chiefs 28-24 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday the stat next to Croyle’s name is 0-9.
He’s winless in his nine starts at quarterback for the Chiefs. Whether it was in 2007, last season, or the opening week of this season, Croyle can’t get over the hump.
So what he did against the Ravens defense was not important to him after the game. His 116.1 pass rating, his 66.7 percent completion percentage, his two TD passes and no interceptions … all meaningless.
“It doesn’t matter, play well, don’t play well, if you don’t win,” Croyle said. “You still have the same feelings and that’s where I’m at.”
Croyle sensed all week that he would start against the Ravens, but he really wasn’t convinced until Sunday morning at M&T Bank Stadium. He had prepared all week to be the starter, but that something he has always done during his time with the Chiefs. As checkered as his career has been because of injury, Croyle does not want any possible opportunity to go by without him doing everything possible to be ready.
And for the most part, he was ready against the Ravens.
“Brodie Croyle gave us a chance to win today and that’s all I’ll ever ask my quarterback to do right now,” said head coach Todd Haley. “I don’t know w hat his numbers were, but I know at some point there it was not pretty, but he was completing the ball where he had to and most importantly, he was not turning it over.
“You cannot against this defense – this specific Baltimore defense more than anybody else – you can’t afford to let them get going. I think he did a very good job doing that.”
Croyle’s first half numbers were not pretty, as he was three of five for a total of 11 yards. That was a reflection of the offense as a whole, which was just terrible in the first half, as the Ravens had an advantage in offensive yardage of 215-56.
Of course, a lot of that can be traced to the Ravens defense.
“They’re talented and we knew that coming in,” Croyle said of the Ravens. “For the most part we did some good things against them in the second half. But we put our defense in a bad situation there at the start of the game. We just can’t do that and win football games.”
In the first half, Croyle was six of eight for 48 yards. In the second half, he hit 10 of 16 passes for 134 yards and a pair of touchdowns, two yards to WR Dwayne Bowe and then 10 yards to TE Sean Ryan. That throw to Bowe in the third quarter was the first time in the game that Croyle looked his way. WR Mark Bradley seemed to be the receiver most frequently on his radar screen.
Croyle faced a lot of pass rush pressure from the Ravens, as he was taken down three times in 27 passing plays. There were a couple of other shots he took after releasing the ball. Overall, the quarterback was pleased with his protection.
“They gave me enough time,” said Croyle. “We knew it was going to be some quick hitting stuff with a defense that talented, with so many blitz schemes. You know we’re going to get some pressure and we did. A lot of those didn’t have anything to do with the offensive line. It was just guys free and we had to get the ball out.”
He also knows that it may be his last chance to start this season, as it looks like Matt Cassel will be ready to go against the Raiders this coming Sunday at Arrowhead. Still, Croyle’s 16 of 24 for 177 yards, two TDs and that 116.1 passer rating are unimportant numbers for him.
“It was a disappointment,” Croyle said. “We came here to win. We had a chance to do it. We just didn’t find a way in.”

“Brodie Croyle gave us a chance to win today and that’s all I’ll ever ask my quarterback to do right now,” said head coach Todd Haley.”
- #12 WILL be the starter SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY vs the RADUHS! Not that said will result in a win – but – will be closer than if Brodie did not play.
““You cannot against this defense – this specific Baltimore defense more than anybody else – you can’t afford to let them get going. I think he did a very good job doing that.”
- one of the more intelligent things ‘check’ has ever said … and it only took him 5 consecutive losses and more than half a year in Kaycee to but do so…

Brodie played well enough for us to win. To bad Carr got beat on that touchdown and we couldn’t force a field goal on that possession. I really felt the defense just didn’t step up when it was really needed in the second half. Croyle never got a chance to win the game late.

The score for BALT was much higher than I expected.
Of course, who woulda thought of 24 points by the Chiefs?
It was only 7 off until the last 2 mins. We had to go for it on 4th down, so we gave them an easy Stat score
Chiefs well on their way to 0-16!

Cue paraphrase of former BUFF LB Isiah Robertso, with final crescendo courtesy Homer Simpson -
“I got a feelin Kansas City’s going winless don’t you know – they’ll be 0 & 16 and come end of ‘09 will be two firings DOH!”

I agree with you Larry. I’ve had to learn to scroll past most everything and try to find intelligence. It’s like digging for gold in a mostly empty and worn out mine. Sometimes you find a gem though.
