“Most football players are tempermental. That’s 90 percent temper and 10 percent mental.”

- Former Bears S Doug Plank -

Beisel, Colclough Gone From Arrowhead

Tuesday was a busy day in the personnel department at the Chiefs offices.

And there’s more to come as two spots remain open on the active roster.

QB Tyler Thigpen was traded to the Miami Dolphins in the morning for an undisclosed draft choice.

Then in the afternoon, the Chiefs released ILB Monty Beisel and CB Ricardo Colclough.

They signed free agent TE Leonard Pope to the active roster. Pope played with the Arizona Cardinals for three seasons, so obviously Todd Haley is familiar with him. At 6-8, 264 pounds, he caught 48 passes for 476 yards and 5 TDs with the Cardinals, where he was largely a blocking TE. Pope had two catches for 21 yards in the ’08 playoffs.

Pope was a third-round pick in the 2006 NFL Draft out of Georgia.

They also made a move on the practice squad, releasing TE Tom Crabtree and signing OT Chris Patrick. A three-year letterman at Nebraska, Patrick went to training camp with the Eagles but was released before the start of the regular season. He went to camp with the Giants in the ’07 season. Patrick stands 6-5 and weighs 315 pounds. He was a three-year lettermen for the Cornhuskers.

LB Beisel & TE Crabtree – 2 more FAILED  and  signees – bite the dust … that makes 21 of the dud-ly duo’s players that have bee ‘swept out & picked up’ by – “NO – OTHER – NFL – TEAMS”.

Finally Pioli has my eyes open b/c I’ve been saying release Colclough since first preseason game! Biesel has been a huge disappointment being he was suppose 2 sure up or special teams.

They can churn the roster all they want but i dont know if there is any quality players out there to be had..

Man, you talk about scraps. Are there anymore TEs or WRs available? Pioli/Haley cannot find a stiff who can block on a offense line or pass rush on the defensive side. Crap is as crap does.

  • September 29, 2009  - Chiefs Fan 82 says:

I like the releases and the new additions. Coclough was garbage. Beisel was very disappointing. He was always known as a special teams monster and was pretty much nonexistent. Thigpen is a good kid. He will help the fins, his time in KC was up. I appreciated his spark he gave last year but he couldn’t win a game and is not an NFL passer. Good luck to you Thiggy. Patrick should be competitive. He played for the Huskers and they have produced good linemen to play for the chiefs. i.e. Shields and Smith. Interested to see how he fits. Pope is a monster. He was brought in to help stop pass rushers. O’Connel is still a work in progress and Cottum hasn’t stepped up yet. He is more of a receiving TE than blocking and that is what we need. Can’t wait to see who fills the next 2 spots.

  • September 29, 2009  - Jody says:

Pope gives them an NFL caliber TE if not necessarily a very good one.

  • September 29, 2009  - el cid says:

Also dumped TE Crabtree and signed Patrick, from NU to practice squad.

Not sure but maybe the Chiefs forfeit the rest of their games and just hold intersquad bouts on sunday for 09. It is not like they belong in the NFL.

  • September 29, 2009  - Chiefs Fan 82 says:

Crabtree was here to compete for a job. Didnt expect him to stick anyway. Why people are keeping track of Pioli players not sticking are hilarious. They were brought in to compete and to have a look at. Scraps and rookie free agents. Of course they’re not all gonna stick around. And Herms players are still here because they have NFL experience. Let’s be patient and wait to see a finished product of what is put together.

  • September 29, 2009  - el cid says:

Fan good comments. I am frustrated by money wasted, etc. Just when will we a “finished product”? Perhaps 2012?

  • September 29, 2009  - Chiefs Fan 82 says:

You have to respect Haley. He has confidence in his players and takes the heat when he errors on the coaching side of games. Herm never once took the blame. He also placed it on the players and called them a college team. That is why they quit on him and why this squad will fight tooth and nail for Todd. You have my support. Stick to your guns and the rest will fall into place. Go chiefs!!!

  • September 29, 2009  - MDChief says:

I like the Pope signing. He is a blocking TE, which we sorely neeed to establish the power running game Haley obviously wants, based upon his comments about the second half of Sunday’s game. We haven’t had that since Jason Dunn.
Runyan is still out there-might fill one of the remaining roster spots.

  • September 29, 2009  - Stiv says:

I also read where the Chiefs had a work out for Mark Tauscher today. He’s an offensive tackle who had played for the Packers until he injured a knee. Apparently he’s healed and ready to play now.

Personally I like the leave no stone unturned approach. Sure some of the guys you give a look to won’t make or upgrade the team, but it’s good to be proactive and keep working at it.

big difference in a failed experiment that has no cost, and a failed experiment that costs a pick…signing pope doesnt such much for ANOTHER herm draft pick

  • September 29, 2009  - DanKCFan says:

Like the Pope signing just wondering why it took so long.

  • September 29, 2009  - Big Lee says:

Chiefs have plenty of room under the cap. They need to sign guys who will be competitive, especially on o-line.

Best of luck to Thiggy. He brought excitement to a forgetable season, but his scatter-arm and active feet are not a good fit for this regime.

    We’re just shuffling deck chairs…

Signed a TE nobody wanted and a T going to his 8th team…great moves.

  • September 29, 2009  - mr awsome says:

we got our asses kicked on sunday but that the first time this year we werent in it, last year tha pats got their asses kicked by the fins and theyr not a bad team, the cardinals got their asses handed to them by the pats but they were in the super bowel. so one game like that doesnt show who we really are its just a bad game everybody has them. thumbs up to todd for taking the heat for his guys if i was one of his players id work my ass of so he doesnt have to take the blame anymore its like your dad when your young you might think hes an unfair jerk and when you grow up you realise he does care and he just wants you to be better

  • September 29, 2009  - Mad Chief says:

Okay, for those calling for Pioli and Haley’s heads already.

Who would YOU have hired as GM? Or would you have kept Carl for the last year of his contract?

Who would YOU have hired as Head Coach? Would you have kept Edwards? That seemed to be going really well, huh?

What FA signings would YOU have made? So, the Chiefs have released a number of guys they signed this off-season. Who was available that they SHOULD have signed. That would have been willing to come here, of course.

You’re quick to criticize, but what would YOU have done? What’s the plan for turning dog sh*t into gold IMMEDIATELY? I’m all ears.

  • September 29, 2009  - SG says:

I’m very pleased that they picked up Pope. It’s obvious their TE position stinks and it’s high time they did something there…proof that a certain 3rd round Herm pick at TE might be the same quality as certain people have just commented about Beisel and Crabtree. Proof that another offensive lineman could have been had but that spot too was wasted?

Stiv-MadChief—and some that feel that if you do nothing , nothing is going to happen , EVER !
Marty Shotterhimer , early in a season — some years back was in this same boat , with Smith (in San Diego ) breathing down his back .
He did EXACTLY what Todd is doing , with the help of the front office and I say WHAT if he does a Marty ,and change + some luck and Marty put a play off team together that same year .
TODD DONT BE A BEAR –BE A GRISLEY !
ITS ME OR THEE , BEFORE THE SUN GOES DOWN !
YOUR GOING TO BE EITHER , THE MOWER OR THE GRASS !

    GO TODD—GO CHIEFS

I sit here and stop and think , then close my eye’s —— IN the last 60+ years I can see people that became leaders of teams and only had one vision , that being the putting a winning team together , and it can be done .

It can be harder at time to time but never easy at any time , but it can and will be done and with the help and support of the people here that love football .
I stop and think of how lucky to have lived in a time to see these events happen .

    Rin,

    Gonzalez was Marty’s guy…not Herm’s.

  • September 30, 2009  - Earl says:

    Rin,

Trying to make an argument based on comparing the guys cut and resigned from Herm’s players to the guys cut and resigned from the Pioli acqusistions is futile. Whether a guy is re-signed by another team after he is cut here does not necessarily make his value higher than a guy who was cut and not resigned by another team. Teams sign and cut free agents all the time. They have injuries and holes they need to fill. They run different schemes and have different ways to use the player than the previous team. They have more of a need at a certain position than the player’s previous team. The coach/gm were familiar with the player when they were on another team. These are all reasons why teams take players from free agency. Teams try guys out all the time and cut them all the time. All your stats really say there is how much Pioli and Haley are working to upgrade the level of talent on this team through any means they can. They are cutting and trading players left and right. They have an understanding now of where thier needs are, and they are willing to make as many changes to satisfy those needs as they have to. The Chiefs need new players to fill holes all over the roster. I say keep it up. And if we can get draft picks for guys nearing the end of thier career (Gonzalez) or guys we never plan on using (Thigpen) then I say make the trade.
