Afternoon Practice Update 8/11

From River Falls, Wisconsin

The few fans who were in Ramer Field at UW-River Falls on Monday watching the Chiefs go through their practice in pads got to see the future of the Chiefs defensive line.

For several plays during the workout the No. 1 defensive line looked like this, from left to right: Turk McBride, Tank Tyler, Glenn Dorsey and Tamba Hali.  That foursome had probably a half-dozen snaps, as the Chiefs were easing Dorsey back into full practice work coming off his knee injury.

But it’s a good bet that in coming practices and weeks that group will spend more and more time together.  It would be a fairly safe bet to pencil them in as the front four for the season opener in New England.

That exposure was the highlight of the long practice session, the only one the Chiefs held on Monday. There were 52 snaps of team work. The offense had a pretty good day for the most part, making something positive out of at least 24 of those plays.  There were at least 30 passes attempted by all three quarterbacks and while several were tipped or knocked down, none were intercepted.  The Chiefs defense did have several sacks in the team work, with McBride right in the middle of at least half of them.

Offensively, the nicest play was a bomb from QB Brodie Croyle to WR Dewayne Bowe down the middle that would have gone for big, big yardage in a game.  Also, RB Larry Johnson had a nice blitz pick up on one passing play. WR Jabari Arthur had a nice catch and WR Maurice Price did as well.

The kickers worked Monday afternoon, with rookie Connor Barth making all three of his field goal attempts, while Nick Novak was two for three.

G Tre Stallings returned to practice work after missing several days with a sore knee.  Still out of the work were WR Kevin Robinson (knee), LB Donnie Edwards (hamstring), LB Napoleon Harris (knee), LT Branden Albert (foot), DE Trevor Johnson (concussion and S Jon McGraw (shoulder.)

The Chiefs will have a special teams workout on Tuesday morning, then a full pads practice in the afternoon.

GREAT coverage Bob… thanks for the updates. Who do you favor for kicker? Seems like we could roll the dice with Barth…

    Bob,
Good to hear that Turk and Tank may both crack the starting lineup. Do you believe that they’ve significantly improved from what you saw from them last year? I’ve had high hopes since the Spring that Dorsey, Tank, Turk, and Tamba could turn into a good young line that we can build around and count on.

Thanks again for all the great coverage. This site is now the best place on the internet for daily Chiefs news, opinions, and analysis. I find myself checking your site two or three times a day, hoping for a new update on the Chiefs practices.

Bob, Love the site. Is Maurice Price the real deal?
His name keeps coming up over and over again.

Yes! I have been waiting for a year now to see Tank and Turk in the starting lineup. I hope it sticks and they do well.

Still no Kevin Robinson practicing with the team, supposedly he was going to start practicing this week – and the Chiefs looking at Dantrell Savage as a return man possibly…there any possibility they can -or- will put WR Robinson on PUP to make room for Savage (or is it too late for PUP?) Too late for Robinson/he’s missed too much time/all of training camp?

Bob, I’m glad you are still covering Chiefs camp because it seems like everyone else has already bailed out of River Falls. Good Work.

Thanks for the continuing great coverage of the camp! As fans, we appreciate it a great deal!

One question though…exactly what is it that Gunther is having trouble getting linebackers to do? If Edwards is having trouble with it, is he asking them to do something that’s really difficult to do a great percentage of the time – for anybody & therefore a big flaw in his scheme?
